Liquid aid was introduced into the unsilvered vacuum-walled vessel, B, and the liquid was cooled, with agitation by the stirring rod, 0, until its temperature was at least as low as the lowest temperature at which measurements were to be made. During this cooling, the tube, D, carrying at its, lower end the filter, E, was kept drawn up so that the filter remained dry. When the liquid had been cooled, the tube, D, was pushed down until the filter, E, was near the bottom of A, and the liquid was driven through the filter into D by the application of a slight air pressure at F. Care was taken to stop the filtering before air could enter the filter, because this might raise the temperature, melt some of the material that had been filtered out, and permit it to pass through the filter with the last portion of the liquid.
