Book Non Verbal Predication in Ancient Egyptian

Download or read book Non Verbal Predication in Ancient Egyptian written by Antonio Loprieno and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Egyptian language, with its written documentation spreading from the Early Bronze Age (Ancient Egyptian) to Christian times (Coptic), has rarely been the object of typological studies, grammatical analysis mainly serving philological purposes. This volume offers now a detailed analysis and a diachronic discussion of the non-verbal patterns of the Egyptian language, from the Pyramid Texts (Earlier Egyptian) to Coptic (Later Egyptian), based on an extensive use of data, especially for later phases. By providing a narrative contextualisation and a linguistic glossing of all examples, it addresses the needs not only of students of Egyptian and Coptic, but also of a linguistic readership. After an introduction into the basic typological features of Egyptian, the main book chapters address morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics of the three non-verbal sentence types documented throughout the history of this language: the adverbial sentence, the nominal sentence and the adjectival sentence. These patterns also appear in a variety of clausal environments and can be embedded in verbal constructions. This book provides an ideal introduction into the study of Egyptian historical grammar and an indispensable companion for philological reading.

Book A Grammar of the Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts Vol I Unis

Download or read book A Grammar of the Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts Vol I Unis written by James P. Allen and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Grammar of the Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts is designed as a six-volume study of the earliest comprehensive corpus of ancient Egyptian texts, inscribed in the pyramids of five pharaohs of the Old Kingdom (ca. 2325–2150 BC) and several of their queens. The first volume, devoted to the earliest corpus, that of Unis, is based on a database that allows for detailed analysis of the orthography of the texts and every aspect of their grammar; it includes a complete hieroglyphic lexicon of the texts and a consecutive transcription and translation on facing pages. The grammatical analysis incorporates both the most recent advances in the understanding of Egyptian grammar and a few new interpretations published here for the first time.

Book The Transformation of an Ancient Egyptian Narrative

Download or read book The Transformation of an Ancient Egyptian Narrative written by Anthony John Spalinger and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the alterations that were performed by Pentawaret, the scribe of P. Sallier III, when he decided to copy the entire text of the Battle of Kadesh. (Temp.: Ramesses II). The work covers his difficulties with syntax and morphology, but also treats the literary aspects of the original composition. The intellectual background to Pentawaret and his associates, especially their political and literary milieu, are covered. A specialized chapter treats the palaeography of P. Sallier III, and additional ones provide the necessary background data concerning the style of the copy and its relationship to the original hieroglyphic version. The final chapter provides a detailed analysis of Egyptian military compositions as literature, and a new unpublished war account of Ramesses III, in hieratic, rounds out the work.

Book The Great Karnak Inscription of Merneptah

Download or read book The Great Karnak Inscription of Merneptah written by Colleen Manassa and published by Yale Egyptology. This book was released on 2004-12-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Karnak Inscription of Merneptah's 5th regnal year, the longest surviving continuous monumental text from Egypt, describes the combined Libyan and Sea People invasion of Egypt c.1208 BCE. This new study, the first complete commentary on this long but unfortunately damaged text, begins with a translation of the text, accompanied by detailed notes. The study considers specific military aspects of the inscription alongside its religious background. A grammatical analysis of the Great Karnak Inscription also sheds new light on the grammar of Ramesside monumental texts. Reviews for this volume: "...a very useful study of a highly important historical text, largely neglected hitherto.'" - K A Kitchen, Book List (2005) "...should be of interest to anyone studying issues relating to international relations of the period, aspects of military conflict in the later New Kingdom, or the monumental grammar of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Dynasties [...] The welcome inclusion of the complete hieroglyphic text should be of great use to anyone wishing to study the content and grammar of this inscription for themselves." - Joshua Roberson, Journal of the American Research Center in Egypt, Vol. XL (2005)

This policy has hindered understanding of these priceless texts. Now expert Robert Feather exposes a shocking conspiracy at the heart of biblical and archaeological studies, and shines a bold--and sure to be controversial--light on the Scrolls, linking the isolated Essene cult at Qumran with Jesus Christ and the Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten, founder of monotheism.

Book The Enigmatic Netherworld Books of the Solar Osirian Unity

Download or read book The Enigmatic Netherworld Books of the Solar Osirian Unity written by John Coleman Darnell and published by Saint-Paul. This book was released on 2004 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Egypt, from the Old to the New Kingdom, enigmatic texts were created on the basis of non-standardized lists of characters and phonetic signs, the exact principles of which are still unclear to this day. For the first time, this study examines in detail the three most comprehensive known inscription texts from the New Kingdom, which were discovered in the tombs of Tutenchamun, Ramses VI and Ramses IX. Darnell shows that these three texts have a theological, iconographic and formal connection, and calls them collectively the "Book of the Solar-Osirian Unity". Differentiated and lively, he presents the content and theological peculiarities of these texts that deal with the afterlife with each other and in relation to other enigmatic texts of the new as well as the Middle and Old Kingdom.

Book Theban Desert Road Survey II

Download or read book Theban Desert Road Survey II written by John Coleman Darnell and published by Yale Egyptology. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second monograph devoted to the work of the Theban Desert Road Survey presents the major rock inscriptions of the northwestern Theban Desert and the western hinterlands of Qamula. The material includes six larger sites and several smaller collections and individual inscriptions and images, sites discovered by the Theban Desert Road Survey over the course of approximately twelve field seasons. The major groupings of inscriptions, from south to north, are the rock shrine of Pahu and the inscriptions of Gebel Akhenaton, sites in the vicinity of the Wadi Himdaniya; a small but interesting collection of inscriptions near the Wadi Arqub Baghla, with two smaller, outlying sites; inscriptions of the Wadi Magar to the north, including the site of the great Predynastic tableau with its plethora of crocodiles, the associated vignette of Elephant-on-the-Gebel, along with the nearby Gebel Sutekh site, and smaller concentrations beyond; and finally the inscriptions of the area of the Matna el-Barqa. Highlights of the epigraphic material include new prayers to Amun and Hathor-one a genuine New Kingdom de profundis recording an appeal to Amun during a storm on the Nile-several important Predynastic and Protodynastic tableaux, and the only rock art depictions of Akhenaton in a true Amarna style.

Book The Inscription of Queen Katimala at Semna

Download or read book The Inscription of Queen Katimala at Semna written by John Coleman Darnell and published by Yale Egyptology. This book was released on 2006-12-31 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete translation and commentary on the important tableau and inscription of Queen Katimala/Karimala at Semna. Proper understanding of the paleography, grammar, and content reveals Katimala to have been a Nubian ruler at the time of the Twenty-First to Twenty-Second Dynasties of Ancient Egypt. She emerges as a political and military leader who took control of at least Lower Nubia in the wake of failed military activities on the part of a male predecessor. Katimala's inscription is not illegible, as has often been stated, but is a well-composed Lower Nubian example of a politico-religious manifesto applying many of the conventions of early Egyptian literary and historical compositions.
