Book excerpt: In cross-national surveys and other studies of multiple groups of respondents, an important methodological consideration is the comparability or equivalence of measurement across the groups. Ideally full equivalence would hold, but very often it does not. If non-equivalence of measurement is ignored when it is present, substantively interesting comparisons between the groups may become biased. We consider such biases in multigroup latent variable modelling of multiple-item scales, specifically latent class and latent trait models for categorical items. We use numerical sensitivity analyses to examine the nature and magnitude of the biases in different circumstances. The results suggest that estimates of multigroup latent variable models can be sensitive to assumptions about measurement, in that non-equivalence of measurement does not need to be extreme before ignoring it may substantially distort cross-group comparisons. Some factors which affect the degree of this bias are described, and results for latent class and latent trait models are compared. We also discuss the implications of such findings on the analysis of large cross-national surveys and other comparative studies.

Consequently, social work researchers must take great care to establish research-design equivalence at all phases of the research process (e.g., problem formulation, research design, sampling, measurement selection, data collection, and data analysis); otherwise, the results might reflect methodological flaws rather than true group differences and therefore lead to erroneous conclusions. This book introduces the methodological precautions that must be taken into consideration when conducting research with diverse groups. Multigroup Confirmatory Analysis (MG-CFA) using structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to demonstrate how to assess seven types of measurement and structural equivalence that Milfont and Fischer (2010) have deemed important for studies with diverse samples. A hypothetical example was provided to illustrate how to design a study with good research-design equivalence. A case example was provided to demonstrate how to conduct an MG-CFA for each type of measurement and structural equivalence discussed. The Mplus syntax used to conduct the MG-CFA was provided. The results from the MG-CFA analyses were written up as they would be for publication.

Such studies often include a comparison, between specific groups of individuals, either at one or multiple points in time. If such latent factor means are to be meaningfully compared, the measurement structures including the latent factor and their survey items should be stable across groups and/or over time, that is ‘invariant’. Recent developments in statistics have provided new analytical tools for assessing measurement invariance (MI). The aim of this special issue is to provide a forum for a discussion of MI, covering some crucial ‘themes’: (1) ways to assess and deal with measurement non-invariance; (2) Bayesian and IRT methods employing the concept of approximate measurement invariance; and (3) new or adjusted approaches for testing MI to fit increasingly complex statistical models and specific characteristics of survey data. The special issue started with a kick-off meeting where all potential contributors shared ideas on potential papers. This expert workshop was organized at Utrecht University in The Netherlands and was funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO-VENI-451-11-008). After the kick-off meeting the authors submitted their papers, all of which were reviewed by experts in the field. The papers in the eBook are listed in alphabetical order, but in the editorial the papers are introduced thematically. Although it is impossible to cover all areas of relevant research in the field of MI, papers in this eBook provide insight on important aspects of measurement invariance. We hope that the discussions included in this special issue will stimulate further research on MI and facilitate further discussions to support the understanding of the role of MI in multi-item surveys.

Yet our measurements of the world are often imperfect, and longitudinal data is vulnerable to measurement errors which can lead to flawed and misleading conclusions. Measurement Error in Longitudinal Data tackles the important issue of how to investigate change in the context of imperfect data. It compiles the latest advances in estimating change in the presence of measurement error from several fields and covers the entire process, from the best ways of collecting longitudinal data, to statistical models to estimate change under uncertainty, to examples of researchers applying these methods in the real world. This book introduces the essential issues of longitudinal data collection, such as memory effects, panel conditioning (or mere measurement effects), the use of administrative data, and the collection of multi-mode longitudinal data. It also presents some of the most important models used in this area, including quasi-simplex models, latent growth models, latent Markov chains, and equivalence/DIF testing. Finally, the use of vignettes in the context of longitudinal data and estimation methods for multilevel models of change in the presence of measurement error are also discussed.

Unemployment and rising poverty have compelled individuals to reconsider their own priorities and goals, while governments have been forced to rethink social policies on the national level, as well as their international economic and political agreements. Some countries have been more deeply affected by the crisis than others, and the impact of economic shortage on individuals and governments has differed, not only because of the different magnitudes of the crisis, but also because individuals react differently to the contextual changes. This book makes use of cross-national survey data to explore the impact of wealth and economic contexts on social values. Instead of attempting to explain how aggregate changes occur (as previous volumes have done) the chapters in this collection focus on micro-level effects to interrogate more deeply the interplay between attitudes and values – and the way both can change as a result of transformation of economic context. This book elaborates on several dimensions of value change: the measurement model and the way it changes under the impact of economic shortage; the connection between universal value orientations and attitudes towards different objects (e.g. the welfare state, immigrants and ethnic groups); the effects of economic factors and vulnerability on values and attitudinal orientations; how particular political and economic contexts produce changes in political orientations. This book focuses on the interrelationship of social values, attitudes and economic scarcity in the context of the last economic crisis experienced by many European countries. Behavioral economists, in particular, have investigated the possible roles of hormones on economic decision making and behavior as well as social preferences and cognitive abilities. Testosterone, oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin and stress hormones are the foremost studied ones in economic contexts. Yet, the results are mixed and the relationship between hormones and economic behavior is under-investigated to this date. Hormone levels are measurable and manipulatable (e.g. activate, de-activate, block). The fact that the behavioral economics also employs experimental methodology makes it possible to observe both correlational and causal relationships between hormones and economic behavior. Since numerous environmental, social and biological factors interact with hormone fluctuations, capturing the true impacts of hormones on decisions and behavior is challenging. Manipulating hormone levels in the body is a method that is used to tackle this issue. Such studies compare observed behaviors of hormones or placebo administrated participants to determine causal relationships. This Research Topic welcomes the studies on the direct or indirect correlates of hormones on economic behavior and decision making to create new insights on the economic consequences of endocrine activity.
