Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic fracturing has recently been the completion of choice for most tight gas formations. It has proven successful to produce these formations in a commercial manner. However, some considerations have to be taken into account when designing a fracture treatment. These considerations include, but not limited to, non-Darcy flow and multiphase flow effects inside the fracture. These effects reduce the fracture conductivity significantly. Failing to account for that results in overestimating the deliverability of the wells and, consequently, to designing a fracture treatment that is not optimum. In this book a thorough investigation of non-Darcy flow and multi-phase flow effects on the productivity of hydraulically fractured gas wells is conducted and an optimum fracture design is proposed for a tight gas formation in south Texas using the Unified Fracture Design (UFD) Technique to compensate for the mentioned effects by calculating the effective fracture permeability in an iterative way. A comparison between the UFD and the most well known 3D fracture simulators is also carried out to point out the differences as far as the methodology and design considerations.

Book Introduction to Multiphase Flow

Download or read book Introduction to Multiphase Flow written by George Yadigaroglu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-19 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the maiden volume in a new series devoted to lectures delivered through the annual seminars “Short Courses on Multiphase Flow,” held primarily at ETH Zurich continuously since 1984. The Zurich short courses, presented by prominent specialists in the various topics covered, have attracted a very large number of participants. This series presents fully updated and when necessary re-grouped lectures in a number of topical volumes. The collection aims at giving a condensed, critical and up-to-date view of basic knowledge on multiphase flows in relation to systems and phenomena encountered in industrial applications. The present volume covers the background of Multiphase Flows (MPF) that introduces the reader to the particular nature and complexity of multiphase flows and to basic but critical aspects of MPFs including concepts and the definition of the quantities of interest, an introduction to modelling strategies for MPFs, flow regimes, flow regime maps and tr ansition criteria. It also deals with the ubiquitous needs of the multiphase-flow modeller, namely pressure drop and phase distribution, i.e., the void fraction and the topology of the phases that determines the flow regimes.

Book Numerical Treatment of Multiphase Flows in Porous Media

Download or read book Numerical Treatment of Multiphase Flows in Porous Media written by Zhangxin Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need to predict, understand, and optimize complex physical and c- mical processes occurring in and around the earth, such as groundwater c- tamination, oil reservoir production, discovering new oil reserves, and ocean hydrodynamics, has been increasingly recognized. Despite their seemingly disparate natures, these geoscience problems have many common mathe- tical and computational characteristics. The techniques used to describe and study them are applicable across a broad range of areas. The study of the above problems through physical experiments, mat- matical theory, and computational techniques requires interdisciplinary col- boration between engineers, mathematicians, computational scientists, and other researchers working in industry, government laboratories, and univ- sities. By bringing together such researchers, meaningful progress can be made in predicting, understanding, and optimizing physical and chemical processes. The International Workshop on Fluid Flow and Transport in Porous - dia was successfully held in Beijing, China, August 2{6, 1999. The aim of this workshop was to bring together applied mathematicians, computational scientists, and engineers working actively in the mathematical and nume- cal treatment of ?uid ?ow and transport in porous media. A broad range of researchers presented papers and discussed both problems and current, state-of-the-art techniques.

Book Upscaling of Single and Two Phase Flow in Reservoir Engineering

Download or read book Upscaling of Single and Two Phase Flow in Reservoir Engineering written by Hans Bruining and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-11-14 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes fundamental upscaling aspects of single-phase/two-phase porous media flow for application in petroleum and environmental engineering. Many standard texts have been written about this subject. What distinguishes this work from other available books is that it covers fundamental issues that are frequently ignored but are relevant for developing new directions to extend the traditional approach, but with an eye on application. Our dependence on fossil energy is 80–90% and is only slowly decreasing. Of the estimated 37 (~40) Gton/year, anthropogenic emissions of about 13 Gton/year of carbon dioxide remain in the atmosphere. An Exergy Return on Exergy Invested analysis shows how to obtain an unbiased quantification of the exergy budget and the carbon footprint. Thus, the intended audience of the book learns to quantify his method of optimization of recovery efficiencies supported by spreadsheet calculations. As to single-phase-one component fluid transport, it is shown how to deal with inertia, anisotropy, heterogeneity and slip. Upscaling requires numerical methods. The main application of transient flow is to find the reasons for reservoir impairment. The analysis benefits from solving the porous media flow equations using (numerical) Laplace transforms. The multiphase flow requires the definition of capillary pressure and relative permeabilities. When capillary forces dominate, we have dispersed (Buckley-Leverett flow). When gravity forces dominate, we obtain segregated flow (interface models). Miscible flow is described by a convection-dispersion equation. We give a simple proof that the dispersion coefficient can be approximated by Gelhar's relation, i.e., the product of the interstitial velocity, the variance of the logarithm of the permeability field and a correlation length. The book will appeal mostly to students and researchers of porous media flow in connection with environmental engineering and petroleum engineering.
