Book Helicopter and V STOL Noise Generation and Suppression

Download or read book Helicopter and V STOL Noise Generation and Suppression written by National Academy of Engineering. AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ENGINEERING BOARD. and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent discussions between scientists of the United States Army Research Office, Durham, North Carolina, and members and staff of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering have identified an urgent need for renewed effort toward suppression of helicopter and V/STOL noise in military operations. Use of the term VTOL is intended to apply to all aircraft capable of vertical flight, of which the helicopter is the best known example. Major recommendations were: (1) Criteria should be established for determining the benefits and costs of noise reduction, on a quantitative basis in both military and commercial operations. (2) Factors determining aural detectability should be established for acoustic signatures of type generated by VTOL aircraft. Annoyance factors should also be established. (3) Mechanisms of noise generation by rotors and propellers should be established by a basic research program including analytical studies and experimental investigations. (4) Standards should be established for measurement of noise levels and data reduction which could be applied on a consistent basis by all investigators using commercially available equipment.

Book Aircraft Noise

Download or read book Aircraft Noise written by Oleksandr Zaporozhets and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-05-13 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft noise has adverse impacts on passengers, airport staff and people living near airports, it thus limits the capacity of regional and international airports throughout the world. Reducing perceived noise of aircraft involves reduction of noise at source, along the propagation path and at the receiver. Effective noise control demands highly skilled and knowledgeable engineers. This book is for them. It shows you how accurate and reliable information about aircraft noise levels can be gained by calculations using appropriate generation and propagation models, or by measurements with effective monitoring systems. It also explains how to allow for atmospheric conditions, natural and artificial topography as well as detailing necessary measurement techniques.

Book Research on Jet Noise Generation and Suppression

Download or read book Research on Jet Noise Generation and Suppression written by W. R. Semrau and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and analytical investigations on jet noise generation and suppression have resulted in a verification of the concept that jet noise is uniquely related to mean flow velocity distribution in the jet wake. Advances have been made in analytical techniques for calculating aerodynamic properties of free jet flow and the related acoustic properties of the flow and verification of the assumption that negligible attenuation of sound occurs during propagation through multi-element jet flows has been achieved. Investigation of selective water injection as a jet noise suppression scheme has indicated little promise for in-flight noise reduction. Studies of noise generation by high temperature and high pressure ratio jets have extended the state-of-the-art in the area of high temperature flow noise suppression, and have resulted in a means for predicting total acoustic power beyond the limits of applicability of the Lighthill parameter. Book Aviation Noise Impact Management

Download or read book Aviation Noise Impact Management written by Laurent Leylekian and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides a view into the state-of-the-art research on aviation noise and related annoyance. The book will primarily focus on the achievements of the ANIMA project (Aviation Noise Impact Management through Novel Approaches), but not exclusively. The content has a broader theme in order to encompass. regulation issues, the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) balanced approach, progresses made on technologies and reduction of noise at source, impact of possible future civil supersonic aircraft, land-use planning issues, as well as the core topics of the ANIMA project, i.e. impact on human beings, annoyance, quality of life, health and findings of the project in this respect. This book differs from traditional research programmes on aviation noise as the authors endeavour, not to lower noise at source, but to reduce the annoyance. This book examines these non-acoustic factors in an effort to help those most affected by aviation noise – communities living close to airports, and also help airport managers, policy-makers, local authorities and researchers to deal with this issue holistically. The book concludes with some recommendations for EU, national and local policy-makers, airport and aviation authorities, and more broadly a scientifically literate audience. These recommendations may help to identify gaps for progress in terms of research but also genuine implementation actions for political and regulatory authorities.

Book Supersonic Transport Noise Reduction Technology Summary Phase 1 Summary of GE4 SST Acoustic Suppression Research

Download or read book Supersonic Transport Noise Reduction Technology Summary Phase 1 Summary of GE4 SST Acoustic Suppression Research written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A development program for a commercial supersonic aircraft and engines was sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration during a five-year period from 1966 through 1971. The unique propulsion system, an afterburning turbojet, required acoustic suppression techniques to reduce its noise levels to those federally regulated for subsonic aircraft. An acoustic suppression research program was conducted by the General Electric Company to develop technology applicable to prototype and commercial supersonic engines. Primary emphasis was on jet noise suppressor development through model and engine testing. Various systems were studied including ejector pumping, simple mechanical primary and secondary suppressors, fluid injectants, multi-element tube nozzles, acoustically treated ejectors, highly segmented annular plug nozzles, etc. A research study on fundamental jet noise generation and reduction mechanisms was conducted at the General Electric Corporate Research and Development Center. In addition, investigatory tests were conducted for identification of total system noise. Application of a choked inlet and an open A sub 8 exhaust cycle were studied for noise reduction. Source turbomachinery noise generation and suppression through treatment application were investigated. This report summarizes the acoustic and aerodynamic technology with emphasis toward development of guidelines for future applications.
