Poetry meets presentation in each of the four sections ("Dusk," "Northern Lights," "Howl," "Lucid Dreams,"), which trace the author's continuing journey of self-discovery while illuminating a path for others along the way. Ink stains, landscapes, dreamlike animals, blackened pages, and textured spreads create a multifaceted reading experience. And true to the moniker, these poems are linked by a motif of "the wild." Celebrating the art of self-love poetry with both word and image, Nocturnal will leave readers comforted, curious, and inspired to explore the world around them.

Download or read book Directing Herbert White written by James Franco and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debut poetry collection by the actor, director, and writer James Franco I’m a nocturnal creature, And I’m here to cheat time. You can see time and exhaustion Taking pay from my face— In fifty years My sleep will be death, I’ll go like the rest, But I’ll have played All the games and all the roles. —from “Nocturnal” “There’s never been a book quite like this. Hollywood — fame, celebrity, the promise of becoming an artist — is the beast at its center. Franco knows it like Melville knows whaling. Hollywood in this book devours its young. Obsessed with myths about its own past, it can be survived only by finding a vantage point that is not Hollywood. Bold yet subtle, fearless yet disarming, Franco has made a book you will never forget.” — Frank Bidart, winner of the Bollingen Prize in American Poetry “A star-studded cast moves like ghosts across the screen of James Franco’s poetic consciousness, imbuing the writing with scenes of icons who are also humans replete with sorrow and presence in our own psyches. James Dean, Monica Vitti, Catherine Deneuve, Sal Mineo, Heath Ledger, pass and fade. The author has a wonderful self-reflexive insouciance about his own fame and roles inhabited, from Hart Crane to Allen Ginsberg to Harvey Milk’s lover. Franco is a gifted contemporary Renaissance kind of guy, surveying the waterfront of illusion, suffering, and impermanance. We leave the movie theater a little wiser.” — Anne Waldman, poet, editor, scholar, and cultural/political activist

Book Nocturnal Lament

    Book Details:
  • Author : Yair Mazor
  • Publisher : Henschelhaus Publishing, Incorporated
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 9781595981318
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Nocturnal Lament written by Yair Mazor and published by Henschelhaus Publishing, Incorporated. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Fogel is undoubtedly the harbinger of modernism in Hebrew poetry. While other Hebrew poets wrote their poems in systematically measured rhythm, rigid rhyme, and metrical patterns, establishing and aesthetically sculpting "celebrated," symbolic themes, the poetry of David Fogel introduced a novel, innovative trend in Hebrew poetry. Accordingly, his poems are presented in a low-key rhythm of conversational Hebrew. Fogel's poetry introduced a new poetic option in Hebrew poetry, one that replaced the proclivity of "fireworks" with a serene, whispering tone. Topics are somber and subdued, the atmosphere in his poetry is bleak and murky, while quietly refraining from blatant complaint. Fogel is a poet of doom and gloom, while expressing the latter in the most moving fashion of acceptance and surrender. David Fogel tragically perished in the Holocaust in 1944. This anthology contains 75 of David Fogel's poems, translated by the author. "David Fogel's 'ars poetica' distinguishes itself with poetic beauty that had not been introduced, practiced, and displayed yet in modern Hebrew poetry. Undoubtedly, David Fogel's somber, Gothic atmosphere, subdued, melancholic tone, naturally fluent rhythm and meter, and 'mutely' practiced rhyme, topics and ideas are devoid of flowery symbolism. Prof. Yair Mazor's aesthetic probe into David Fogel's art of poetry analyzes meticulously and lucidly the David Fogel's poetic art. Hence, Prof. Mazor's study of David Fogel's poetry enables the readers to appreciate and even admire the poetry of David Fogel from the very depth of its artistic depth to its panoramic, breathtaking view point." -Professor Moshe Pelli, Director & Abe and Tess Wise Endowed Professor of Judaic Studies Interdisciplinary Program in Judaic Studies, University of Central Florida
