Download or read book The Aesthetics of Violence written by Robert Appelbaum and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence at an aesthetic remove from the spectator or reader has been a key element of narrative and visual arts since Greek antiquity. Here Robert Appelbaum explores the nature of mimesis, aggression, the effects of antagonism and victimization and the political uses of art throughout history. He examines how violence in art is formed, contextualised and used by its audiences and readers. Bringing traditional German aesthetic and social theory to bear on the modern problem of violence in art, Appelbaum engages theorists including Kant, Schiller, Hegel, Adorno and Gadamer. The book takes the reader from Homer and Shakespeare to slasher films and performance art, showing how violence becomes at once a language, a motive, and an idea in the experience of art. It addresses the controversies head on, taking a nuanced view of the subject, understanding that art can damage as well as redeem. But it concludes by showing that violence (in the real world) is a necessary condition of art (in the world of mimetic play).

Those with means threaten to pillage and plunder what isn't rightfully theirs. They say history repeats itself, but perhaps the horrors of the past are also forgotten when the northern armies prepare to invade the south with one horrible result in mind. In the midst of it all...war, hunger, and despair, an unlikely leader will emerge: a fourteen-year-old army scout named Caroline Mathers, who may also be the last of a special breed called Kinders. With some help from two unlikely allies, Caroline leads her people in a breathtaking retreat, praying they'll find salvation in their capitol city. Along the way, haunting dreams may reveal a look into her mystifying past. The first book of the Warchild trilogy series is a young adult dystopian thriller full of fast-paced action and adventure, perfect for fans of The Hunger Games and the Divergent series. ***READER NOTE : SPOILERS BELOW*** Warchild: Judas Hope alone can not win the war. Caroline Mathers, Forward Scout of the People's Republic of Virginia, leads her people to safety after a harrowing escape through the Appalachian Mountains. But, the security of their capitol city won't last for long...maybe even less than a night. Old friends are left behind, while inside the walls, new alliances are formed and trust betrayed. Empowered by the strength of a massive army, their northern enemies suffocate the city outside the walls, preparing to take control of what they believe is rightfully theirs: citizen slaves. With the help of her fellow Kinder, Finn, and an ill-equipped group of volunteer soldiers, Caroline must defend her city to the last breath or watch her people marched away in chains. Download or read book The Big Questions written by Lou Marinoff and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2009-09-07 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Lou Marinoff's first book drew on the wisdom of the great philosophers to solve our everyday problems, launching a movement that restored philosophy to what it once was: useful in all walks of life. Now, in The Big Questions, he takes the concept to the next level, applying centuries of philosophy and great literature to answer central questions of modern existence. Urging us not to accept victimhood as the by-product of modern life, Professor Marinoff uses specific case studies from his counseling practice to show how wisdom from the great thinkers can help us define our own philosophy, and thereby reclaim our sense of well-being. He asks and answers questions that go to the heart of the human condition: How do we know what is right? How can we cope with change? Why can't we all get along? And, most centrally, how can we use the centuries of wisdom that have come before us to help us answer these questions and feel at ease in the world? Accessible, entertaining, and profoundly useful, The Big Questions mixes wisdom from the great thinkers with specific case studies to illuminate how a shift in perspective can truly be life changing. Lou Marinoff is the author of the international hit Plato, Not Prozac!, which has been published in twenty languages. A professor of philosophy at the City College of New York, Marinoff is also the founding president of the American Philosophical Practitioners Association. Praise for Plato, Not Prozac: 'What exactly is philosophical practice? Marinoff calls it 'therapy for the sane.' In a nutshell, it's using the 2,500-year-old tradition of philosophy to solve everyday problems, like work, relationship and family issues. It's a return to what philosophy was meant to be - a guideline for a way of life.'-Salon.Com 'Plato, Not Prozac! looks to become the bible of the "philosophical counseling" movement.' -Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine 'The ancient think

Download or read book Every Boy Should Have a Man written by Preston L. Allen and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2013-04-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “James Baldwin meets Aldous Huxley” in this “highly original” speculative fable (Chicago Tribune). Nominated for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in Fiction In a post-human world, creatures called oafs keep humanlike “mans” as beloved pets. One day, a poor boy oaf brings home a man, whom he hides under his bed in the hopes his parents won’t find out . . . “Much like Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel Planet of the Apes, this novel is a sardonic parable on the nature and destiny of the species. A nimble fable whose bold narrative experiment is elevated by its near-biblical language and affectionate embrace of our inherent flaws.” —Kirkus Reviews “An imaginative and honest epic, weaving together biblical stories, fantasy, poetry, and fairy tales with a touch of realism. . . . Allen asks us to question the assumptions, -isms, and contradictions of the modern world. . . . Recalling the humanitarian concerns of Octavia Butler’s Fledgling and the poetry of Ovid’s Metamorphosis [sic], this book will appeal to readers of literary fiction and fantasy.” —Library Journal “Imaginative, versatile, and daring, Allen raids the realms of myth and fairy tales in this topsy-turvy speculative fable. . . . With canny improvisations on ‘Jack and the Beanstalk,’ the ‘Epic of Gilgamesh,’ and Alice in Wonderland, Allen sharpens our perceptions of class divides, racism, enslavement, and abrupt and devastating climate change to create a delectably adventurous, wily, funny, and wise cautionary parable.” —Booklist “It is one thing to devise a fable dealing so adroitly with such concepts as racism, war, religion, and the very nature of civilization itself, but Preston’s true triumph is the infusion of each page and every astonishing episode with palpable emotional resonance.” —Les Standiford, New York Times–bestselling author of Last Train to Paradise A Chicago Tribune Noteworthy Fiction Pick
