Book excerpt: Outsiders have always thought that Skull & Bones is the most mysterious and exclusive of Yale's secret societies. But they're wrong, dead wrong. It pales in comparison to the Devil's Den. Located in a haunting, windowless building in the middle of campus, the Devil's Den is so secretive that no one has ever been seen either entering or leaving its premises. Rumors abound as to who its members are and what goes on behind its closed doors. The Den's alumni supposedly include some of the country's most powerful businessmen and government leaders. But just how widespread is their influence? And just how far are they willing to go to achieve their goals? Justin Karl, a Yale senior and a columnist for the Yale Daily News, has always considered himself an outsider standing on the sidelines of life—an observer who simply records the activities and lives of other people. But everything dramatically changes for Justin once he becomes ensnared by the Den and its intricate scheme. When he finally discovers the truth, the whole terrible truth, Justin finds himself in a race against the clock to foil the Devil's Den and to prevent the course of American history from being drastically altered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here at last is the comprehensive collection you've been searching for to minister effectively to your children during worship. Each of the 260 talks teach children God's Word through the use of common objects that illustrate an important concept in the scriptures. The messages come from Wesley Runk, a pastor and master communicator with kids who has written over 30 best-selling collections of children's sermons and object lessons. Runk uses a warm and often humorous approach to take on even the tough topics of the New Testament -- and the analogies he creates with the use of such simple objects as bananas, clocks, puzzles, and funnels add visual focus for the kids and help them grasp the point on a level suitable for their age. Now, whether you are preaching from the Gospels, Acts, the letters of Paul, the general Epistles, or even Revelation, you are sure to find an appropriate related talk for the children. And with convenient features like scripture and object indexes for quickly locating material as well as a CD with text files that lets you easily adapt the messages to your specific circumstances, The Giant Book Of Children's Sermons may be the last children's collection you ever need!

Book Downhome Gospel

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jerrilyn McGregory
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2010-10-05
  • ISBN : 162846836X
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Downhome Gospel written by Jerrilyn McGregory and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerrilyn McGregory explores sacred music and spiritual activism in a little-known region of the South, the Wiregrass Country of Georgia, Alabama, and North Florida. She examines African American sacred music outside of Sunday church-related activities, showing that singing conventions and anniversary programs fortify spiritual as well as social needs. In this region African Americans maintain a social world of their own creation. Their cultural performances embrace some of the most pervasive forms of African American sacred music—spirituals, common meter, Sacred Harp, shape-note, traditional, and contemporary gospel. Moreover, the contexts in which they sing include present-day observations such as the Twentieth of May (Emancipation Day), Burial League Turnouts, and Fifth Sunday. Rather than tracing the evolution of African American sacred music, this ethnographic study focuses on contemporary cultural performances, almost all by women, which embrace all forms. These women promote a female-centered theology to ensure the survival of their communities and personal networks. They function in leadership roles that withstand the test of time. Their spiritual activism presents itself as a way of life. In Wiregrass Country, “You don't have to sing like an angel” is a frequently expressed sentiment. To these women, “good” music is God's music regardless of the manner delivered. Therefore, Downhome Gospel presents gospel music as being more than a transcendent sound. It is local spiritual activism that is writ large. Gospel means joy, hope, expectation, and the good news that makes the soul glad.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American mafia has long held powerful sway over our collective cultural imagination. But how many of us truly understand how a clandestine Sicilian criminal organisation came to exert its influence over nearly every level of American society? In BORGATA: RISE OF EMPIRE, former mafia member Louis Ferrante pulls back the curtain on the criminal organisation that transformed America. From the potent political cauldron of nineteenth-century Sicily to American cities such as New Orleans, New York and the gangster's paradise of Las Vegas, Ferrante traces the social, economic and political forces that powered the mafia's unstoppable rise. We follow the early mob as they provide alcohol to the American public during prohibition, aid U. S. Naval Intelligence during the Second World War, establish a gambling mecca in the Nevada desert - and unofficially take control of the island of Cuba. Ferrante's vivid portrayal of early American mobsters - among them Lucky Luciano, Vito Genovese, Frank Costello and Meyer Lansky - fills in crucial gaps of mafia history to deliver the most comprehensive account yet of the world's most famous criminal fraternity. This volume is the first in a groundbreaking new trilogy from a man who has seen it all from the inside. Ferrante's masterful account journeys from the group's inauspicious beginnings to the height of their power as the most influential organised criminal network in America.
