Book The Limitations of Social Media Feminism

Download or read book The Limitations of Social Media Feminism written by Jessica Megarry and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-27 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #MeToo. Digital networking. Facebook groups. Social media continues to be positioned by social movement scholars as an exciting new tool that has propelled feminism into a dynamic fourth wave of the movement. But how does male power play out on social media, and what is the political significance of women using male-controlled and algorithmically curated platforms for feminism? To answer these questions, Megarry foregrounds an analysis of the practices and ethics of the historical Women’s Liberation Movement (WLM), including the revolutionary characteristics of face-to-face organising and the development of an autonomous print culture. Centering discussions of time, space and surveillance, she utilises radical and lesbian feminist theory to expose the contradictions between the political project of women’s liberation and the dominant celebratory narratives of Web 2.0. This is the first book to seriously consider how social media perpetuates the enduring logic of patriarchy and howdigital activism shapes women’s oppression in the 21st century. Drawing on interviews with intergenerational feminist activists from the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, as well as archival and digital activist materials, Megarry boldly concludes that feminists should abandon social media and return to the transformative powers of older forms of women-centred political praxis. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Women’s and Gender Studies, Lesbian and Queer Studies, Social Movement Studies, Critical Internet Studies and Political Communication, as well as anyone with an interest in feminist activism and the history of the WLM.

Book A Room of One s Own

Download or read book A Room of One s Own written by Virginia Woolf and published by Modernista. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginia Woolf's playful exploration of a satirical »Oxbridge« became one of the world's most groundbreaking writings on women, writing, fiction, and gender. A Room of One's Own [1929] can be read as one or as six different essays, narrated from an intimate first-person perspective. Actual history blends with narrative and memoir. But perhaps most revolutionary was its address: the book is written by a woman for women. Male readers are compelled to read through women's eyes in a total inversion of the traditional male gaze. VIRGINIA WOOLF [1882–1941] was an English author. With novels like Jacob’s Room [1922], Mrs Dalloway [1925], To the Lighthouse [1927], and Orlando [1928], she became a leading figure of modernism and is considered one of the most important English-language authors of the 20th century. As a thinker, with essays like A Room of One’s Own [1929], Woolf has influenced the women’s movement in many countries.

Book Surviving the Radicalization of America

Download or read book Surviving the Radicalization of America written by Glenn Jackson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are America's values crumbling? Can we hold back the flood of attacks on them that we see in the daily news, the political arena, and the entertainment world? Surviving the Radicalization of America asks these tough questions and offers helpful solutions. Author Glenn Jackson uses his perspective as a common American to help explain his views on why America has become polarized instead of centralized. Jackson believes a more balanced interpretation of America can be found by incorporating a variety of viewpoints. Divided into four sections--foundation, development, relational issues, and creating a future--Surviving the Radicalization of America is an informal conversation focused on finding a way to cope with today's challenges. Even though we have increased our knowledge in science, technology, and medicine, we still do not fully understand the human spirit. By discussing these significant issues, we can find a way through the confusion and chaos and learn to live a balanced, risk-managed life.

Book Feminist Politics in Neoconservative Russia

Download or read book Feminist Politics in Neoconservative Russia written by Perheentupa, Inna and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a nuanced and compelling analysis of grassroots feminist activism in Russia in the politically turbulent 2010s. Drawing on rich ethnographic data, the author illustrates how a new generation of activists chose feminism as their main political beacon, and how they negotiated the challenges of authoritarian and conservative trends. As we witness a backlash against feminism on a global scale with the rise of neoconservative governments, this highly relevant book decentres Western theory and concepts of feminism and social movements, offering significant insights into how resistance can mobilize and invent creative tactics to cope with an increasingly repressed space for independent political action.

Book Genders 22

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ellen E. Berry
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 1995-07
  • ISBN : 0814712479
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Genders 22 written by Ellen E. Berry and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1995-07 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epidemic of mass rape in the former Yugoslavia has illustrated once again, and in particularly brutal fashion, the inextricable relationship between national politics, sexual politics, and body politics. The nexus of these three forces is highly charged in any culture, at any time in history, but especially so among cultures in which rapid, even cataclysmic, changes in material realities and national self-conceptions are eroding or overwhelming previously secure boundaries. The postcommunist moment in the so-called Second World--Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union--has dramatically exposed the opportunities and dangers that arise when the political, cultural, and economic foundations of a society are de- and then re-structured. Gender roles and relations, expressions of sexuality or attempts to recontain them, representations of the body, especially the female body, and the larger, cultural meanings it assumes, are particularly marked sites to witness the performance of complex national dramas of crisis and change. This groundbreaking volume turns its attention to the Second World, specifically to such subjects as the birth of the sex media and porn industry in Russia; Russian women and alcoholism; cinema in post-communist Hungary; patriotism and gender in Poland; sexual dissidence in Eastern Europe; and women in the former Yugoslavia. >[ go to the Genders website ]

Book The Routledge Research Companion to Media Geography

Download or read book The Routledge Research Companion to Media Geography written by Paul C. Adams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Companion provides an authoritative source for scholars and students of the nascent field of media geography. While it has deep roots in the wider discipline, the consolidation of media geography has started only in the past decade, with the creation of media geography’s first dedicated journal, Aether, as well as the publication of the sub-discipline’s first textbook. However, at present there is no other work which provides a comprehensive overview and grounding. By indicating the sub-discipline’s evolution and hinting at its future, this volume not only serves to encapsulate what geographers have learned about media but also will help to set the agenda for expanding this type of interdisciplinary exploration. The contributors-leading scholars in this field, including Stuart Aitken, Deborah Dixon, Derek McCormack, Barney Warf, and Matthew Zook-not only review the existing literature within the remit of their chapters, but also articulate arguments about where the future might take media geography scholarship. The volume is not simply a collection of individual offerings, but has afforded an opportunity to exchange ideas about media geography, with contributors making connections between chapters and developing common themes.

Book Just Work

    Book Details:
  • Author : Russell MUIRHEAD
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2009-06-30
  • ISBN : 0674041275
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Just Work written by Russell MUIRHEAD and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This elegant essay on the justice of work focuses on the fit between who we are and the kind of work we do. Russell Muirhead shows how the common hope for work that fulfills us involves more than personal interest; it also points to larger understandings of a just society. We are defined in part by the jobs we hold, and Muirhead has something important to say about the partial satisfactions of the working life, and the increasingly urgent need to balance the claims of work against those of family and community. Against the tendency to think of work exclusively in contractual terms, Muirhead focuses on the importance of work to our sense of a life well lived. Our notions of freedom and fairness are incomplete, he argues, without due consideration of how we fit the work we do. Muirhead weaves his argument out of sociological, economic, and philosophical analysis. He shows, among other things, how modern feminism's effort to reform domestic work and extend the promise of careers has contributed to more democratic understandings of what it means to have work that fits. His account of individual and social fit as twin standards of assessment is original and convincing--it points both to the unavoidable problem of distributing bad work in society and to the personal importance of finding fulfilling work. These themes are pursued through a wide-ranging discussion that engages thinkers from Plato to John Stuart Mill to Betty Friedan. Just Work shows what it would mean for work to make good on the high promise so often invested in it and suggests what we--both as a society and as individuals--might do when it falls short.

Book Birth of a Jewel

Download or read book Birth of a Jewel written by Terese Neely Pottinger and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-02-07 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered if you really mattered in this world, what your purpose was, or what you lived for? As you lie down to sleep at night, do you ever wish you could erase the day and have a do-over or said something you deeply regretted, wishing you could delete the whole conversation like it never happened and begin again? Have you found a comfortable balance between giving and receiving, between guilt and genuine compassion? Have you been in a room full of surface-only conversations and just wanted to excuse yourself because that way of communicating doesn't work for you anymore? And have there been times when you felt a deep void and didn't know how to fill it or where it even was? If you have, welcome. You are not alone. The answers to these questions and more are found in the book you now hold in your hand. I have always believed there are no coincidences, and our choices (as in picking up this book) could be calling us to open ourselves to new and positive ways of approaching challenges and lessons as we move forward in our lives. The Birth of a Jewel is a series of stories that have brought wisdom and inspiration front and center for me, from the life lessons I have gained through my experiences walking on this earth. Some of the stories may have you laughing; some may stop you in your tracks, and the tears will flow; and then others may leave you pondering about your own journey and the lessons you can share with others. We are a people of watchers, so therefore, we are teachers by the way we live our lives. Thought to ponder: What do you live for, and what purpose do you carry that moves you to make a difference?
