Book No One Is Coming to Save Us

Download or read book No One Is Coming to Save Us written by Stephanie Powell Watts and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *THE INAUGURAL SARAH JESSICA PARKER PICK FOR BOOK CLUB CENTRAL* CHOSEN AS A 2017 BEST SUMMER READ PICK BY The Wall Street Journal • The Washington Post • The Seattle Times NAMED ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2017 BY Entertainment Weekly • Nylon • Elle • Redbook • W Magazine • The Chicago Review of Books JJ Ferguson has returned home to Pinewood, North Carolina, to build his dream house and to pursue his high school sweetheart, Ava. But as he reenters his former world, where factories are in decline and the legacy of Jim Crow is still felt, he’s startled to find that the people he once knew and loved have changed just as much as he has. Ava is now married and desperate for a baby, though she can’t seem to carry one to term. Her husband, Henry, has grown distant, frustrated by the demise of the furniture industry, which has outsourced to China and stripped the area of jobs. Ava’s mother, Sylvia, caters to and meddles with the lives of those around her, trying to fill the void left by her absent son. And Don, Sylvia’s unworthy but charming husband, just won’t stop hanging around. JJ’s return—and his plans to build a huge mansion overlooking Pinewood and woo Ava—not only unsettles their family, but stirs up the entire town. The ostentatious wealth that JJ has attained forces everyone to consider the cards they’ve been dealt, what more they want and deserve, and how they might go about getting it. Can they reorient their lives to align with their wishes rather than their current realities? Or are they all already resigned to the rhythms of the particular lives they lead? No One Is Coming to Save Us is a revelatory debut from an insightful voice: with echoes of The Great Gatsby it is an arresting and powerful novel about an extended African American family and their colliding visions of the American Dream. In evocative prose, Stephanie Powell Watts has crafted a full and stunning portrait that combines a universally resonant story with an intimate glimpse into the hearts of one family.

Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.

Book Hong Cheng

Download or read book Hong Cheng written by Pu-Chin Hsueh Waide and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hong Cheng: Memoirs of a Turbulent Life through Sunlight-tinted Red Earth Storm is a compilation of memories of Hsueh Chi Pei translated from his Chinese brushstrokes or told to me when he was over eighty years old. He begins his story from the place of his birth in a tiny village Dawu at the border of Sichuan, China, and Kham, Tibet; through primary and middle school in KhangDing and ChengDu; to the war and political colleges in Nanking and eventually to Chungking; and World War II and the Japanese invasion of China. It tells of his early years: his stern father who was almost never at home because of his job as protectorate of the far western and southern regions of the realm, his encounters with the local Tibetans boys who were always at odds with the Han boys, and his meetings with several holy lamas and monks. With his fathers insistence, he was one of the first Chinese boys, at the age of seven, to start English lessons, which served him well in his later years. With his unusual curly hair and quick wit, he was a very popular little figure in his village. He spoke about his work in the Opium Detox Center where he met his wife and how he accompanied her to meet her family and were caught in the line of refugees escaping from the Japanese. All in all, the book describes what the title tried to describe: a life full of change and strife but with glints of sunshine and humor. I have kept the title of this book as close a translation to Hong Cheng as possible. It is a very personal narration, and I have tried to keep the words as close to his way of speaking. He deliberately refused to get into the political climate of the times, except for a few remarks and observations here and there, because it was simply too painful for him to relive those conditions. So I let be at that. He was not very specific about dates and spoke almost like a stream of consciousness, and as he narrated, we wept and I transcribed. Occasionally, we had to consult a Chinese-English dictionary when I could not find the word or meaning he was trying to express.

Book THERE IS POWER IN PRAISE

Download or read book THERE IS POWER IN PRAISE written by GODSWORD GODSWILL ONU and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is fearful in praises; and there is great power in praise! If you have done all you know to do without success, use the weapon of praise, and the result you will get will blow your mind! A classic example of the power of praise is when the people of Moab, Ammon, and Mount Seir came to battle with Jehoshaphat, king of Judah. The Lord fought for them, as they sang and praised. But I want you to notice that it was not praises alone that secured the victory for them. Firstly, they fasted; secondly, they prayed; thirdly, they believed God; fourthly, they appointed holy and sanctified people to offer praises; and fifthly, they sang and praised.

Book excerpt: My name is Sath... My name is Sathariel, actually. I am one of those who people call ha-Satan. Yes, it means “adversary” in Aramaic and yes, it is “adversary of God”. But for some reason, everyone has forgotten that those who you nicknamed like this, were first and foremost the defenders of people, who stand by you before a Heavenly court. It was providence we didn’t choose. It was decided instead for us. You, people, have given us many names, but none of them was correct, and you people, have given us functions completely unfamiliar to us. We were deities to you at first, then we became the outcasts. And we were Iyrin, the Watchers, who guard and protect you. And who decides if we’ve done our jobs well? It would be foolish to make excuses now. Who am I to do this? My name is Sathariel and it means “the one who is on the other side of God”. But I’m just an archivist who writes time. Every moment of time, from the beginning of time. Who am I? I’m just one of the Brethren, one among two hundred of “the fallen”. But now... now I want to tell you our real story.
