Book Family origin histories

Download or read book Family origin histories written by Edward Sapir and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuu-chah-nulth “family histories” are actually tribal histories since their idea of family encompasses the tribe. Eighteen such histories are presented here, chronicling the origins and resources of a number of tribal families. In lieu of written records, these oral traditions stood as Nuu-chah-nulth history and were recited formally in public on ceremonial occasions. Several accounts give long lists of foods. Others describe the acquisition of important technological advances, such as a salmon trap. Half of the texts are short, focusing on a particular item like a mask or a house decoration. One text lists hundreds of Nuu-chah-nulth place names given mythically by Swan Women to the Port Alberni region, which was previously Salish in population and language. Generally, these histories explain how the world came to be and set forth family claims to material and spiritual resources. Each account belonged to the family, which had the exclusive right to tell it publicly. Summary outlines are provided in the introduction.

Book excerpt: Roman Britain, 366 AD: Minna, an eighteen-year-old Roman serving girl, leads a quiet life with her grandmother, a Celtic herbal healer. But when her beloved grandmother dies, Minna must make a difficult choice—marry a man she loathes, or venture out alone to track down her brother, a soldier in a Roman garrison stationed in the war-torn and wild Scottish borderlands. Desperate to find her brother, Minna falls in with Cian, an aloof but charming young acrobat. A terrible mistake thrusts the pair into slavery in the wilds of barbarian Scotland, where the Romans wage war on the violent, blue-tattooed Picts in Eastern Scotland. Cahir, King of the Dalriadans of western Scotland, is caught in the middle of a war that will seal the fate of the Scots. Year by year, Cahir has watched in shame as his people fall under the Roman yoke. Now Cian and Minna, unwilling prisoners at Cahir’s fort, must fight for their survival.

Book Guarani Linguistics in the 21st Century

Download or read book Guarani Linguistics in the 21st Century written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Guarani Linguistics in the 21st Century Bruno Estigarribia and Justin Pinta bring together a series of state-of-the-art linguistic studies of the Guarani language. Guarani is the only indigenous language of the Americas that is spoken by a non-indigenous majority. In 1992, it achieved official status in Paraguay, on a par with Spanish. Current language planning efforts focus on its standardization for use in education, administration, science, and technology. In this context, it is of paramount importance to have a solid understanding of Guarani that is well-grounded in modern linguistic theory. This volume aims to fulfil that role and spur further research of this important South American language.

The books, revised and presented here as individual chapters, offer invaluable insights into the philosophy and way of life of Native Hawaiian culture: Pono (right way of living) Aloha (love and affection) Welina (welcome and hospitality) A'o (education) Ola (health and healing) Ho'oponopono (healing to make things right) Ho'omana (the sacred and spiritual) Alaka'i (leadership) Kākā'ōlelo (oratory) Ho'onohonoho (cultural management) Kapu (gender roles) Hewa (wrong way of living) Readers both familiar and unfamiliar with Native Hawaiian traditions and practices will find much to reflect on as well as practical guidance and knowledge. Throughout Chun draws on first-hand accounts from early Hawaiian historians, early explorers and missionaries, and nineteenth-century Hawaiian language publications--as well as his own experience, gained from a lifetime of engagement with the language and culture. No Nā Mamo contains new and updated information throughout, a completely new chapter on Aloha, color illustrations, prefaces by the author and editor, a new Afterword, and an Appendix describing the challenges faced in creating this book.

Book Cultural Heritage Management and Indigenous People in the North of Colombia

Download or read book Cultural Heritage Management and Indigenous People in the North of Colombia written by Wilhelm Londoño Díaz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Heritage Management and Indigenous People in the North of Colombia explores indigenous people's struggle for territorial autonomy in an aggressive political environment and the tensions between heritage tourism and Indigenous rights. South American cases where local communities, especially Indigenous groups, are opposed to infrastructure projects, are little known. This book lays out the results of more than a decade of research in which the resettlement of a pre-Columbian village has been documented. It highlights the difficulty of establishing the link between archaeological sites and objects, and Indigenous people due to legal restrictions. From a decolonial framework, the archaeology of Pueblito Chairama (Teykú) is explored, and the village stands as a model to understand the broader picture of the relationship between Indigenous people and political and economic forces in South America. The book will be of interest to researchers in Archaeology, Anthropology, Heritage and Indigenous Studies who wish to understand the particularities of South American repatriation cases and Indigenous archaeology in the region.
