Book No Immediate Threat

Download or read book No Immediate Threat written by Kerri Fivecoat-Campbell and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-09 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "That damn war," my mother wailed between sobs. My brother, Steve, died on the streets of Fargo, North Dakota nearly 30 years to the day he enlisted into the Army and went to Vietnam. He left us only with questions about our failure to help him and why our mother was never notified of his death. Steve's story mirrors those of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. No Immediate Threat doesn't just tell the story of one American veteran, it tells the story of many. "Ms. Campbell tells it like it is and offers many good insights, and cures into the problems not only faced by Vietnam vets, but also our returning veterans from the Gulf War and Iraq. Will their story be different?" -Rick Baker, Vietnam veteran, 1968-70 "No Immediate Threat is more than a stirring and sensitive tribute to a Vietnam veteran brother whose untimely death shocked family and friends. This book also raises searching questions about how we treat our current returning veterans and their families, what services are actually available to them, and what we can do to make sure our government responds to their needs." -Maril Crabtree, author of the Sacred series, www.sacredfeathers.com

Book excerpt: “The most honest book about climate change yet.” —The Atlantic “The Infinite Jest of climate books.” —The Baffler A timely, eye-opening book about climate change and energy generation that focuses on the consequences of nuclear power production, from award-winning author William T. Vollmann In his nonfiction, William T. Vollmann has won acclaim as a singular voice tackling some of the most important issues of our age, from poverty to violence to the dark soul of American imperialism as it has played out on the U.S./Mexico border. Now, Vollmann turns to a topic that will define the generations to come--the factors and human actions that have led to global warming. Vollmann begins No Immediate Danger, the first volume of Carbon Ideologies, by examining and quantifying the many causes of climate change, from industrial manufacturing and agricultural practices to fossil fuel extraction, economic demand for electric power, and the justifiable yearning of people all over the world to live in comfort. Turning to nuclear power first, Vollmann then recounts multiple visits that he made at significant personal risk over the course of seven years to the contaminated no-go zones and sad ghost towns of Fukushima, Japan, beginning shortly after the tsunami and reactor meltdowns of 2011. Equipped first only with a dosimeter and then with a scintillation counter, he measured radiation and interviewed tsunami victims, nuclear evacuees, anti-nuclear organizers and pro-nuclear utility workers. Featuring Vollmann's signature wide learning, sardonic wit, and encyclopedic research, No Immediate Danger, whose title co-opts the reassuring mantra of official Japanese energy experts, builds up a powerful, sobering picture of the ongoing nightmare of Fukushima.

Book Over the Horizon

  • Author : David M. Edelstein
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2017-09-15
  • ISBN : 150171208X
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Over the Horizon written by David M. Edelstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do established powers react to growing competitors? The United States currently faces a dilemma with regard to China and others over whether to embrace competition and thus substantial present-day costs or collaborate with its rivals to garner short-term gains while letting them become more powerful. This problem lends considerable urgency to the lessons to be learned from Over the Horizon. David M. Edelstein analyzes past rising powers in his search for answers that point the way forward for the United States as it strives to maintain control over its competitors. Edelstein focuses on the time horizons of political leaders and the effects of long-term uncertainty on decision-making. He notes how state leaders tend to procrastinate when dealing with long-term threats, hoping instead to profit from short-term cooperation, and are reluctant to act precipitously in an uncertain environment. To test his novel theory, Edelstein uses lessons learned from history’s great powers: late nineteenth-century Germany, the United States at the turn of the twentieth century, interwar Germany, and the Soviet Union at the origins of the Cold War. Over the Horizon demonstrates that cooperation between declining and rising powers is more common than we might think, although declining states may later regret having given upstarts time to mature into true threats.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle rocked the science fiction world with The Mote in God's Eye. Sentient, capable, and even charming, the "Moties" nevertheless proved to be enemies of humankind-not by intent, but by dint of biology. With a fresh point of view, deep continuity, and page-turning plot twists, Pournelle brings a new generation of Moties to life for a new generation of readers. Outies introduces new characters, adds depth to beloved old ones, creates a rich, imaginable world, and stands the very notion of "first contact" on its head by questioning what it means to be an alien and an outsider.

Download or read book Trumpism written by Carter A. Wilson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trumpism: Race, Class, Populism and Public Policy is divided into two parts. Part One examines the foundation of Trumpism: Trump's form of populism, Trump's political ideas, and Trump's base of support. The text defines Trump as a right-wing populist. His political base emerged out of four political movements: the conservative evangelical Christian, the Tea Party, the economic elite, and the white nationalist movements. Part Two examines Trump's public policy agenda. It covers labor, health care, social welfare, voting rights and police policies. A review of these policy areas reveals a consistent pattern: a public policy agenda committed to weakening labor power, hacking away at the Affordable Care Act, shredding the social safety net, eviscerating voting rights and constructing a racially repressive police state. The central theme is that despite his popular appeal to white workers and conservative evangelical Christians, Trump's public policy agenda favored the upper class, exacerbated inequality, and had its most devastating impact on low-income white workers and minorities.

This edition is sure to provide readers with eye-opening insight into an epidemic of injustice and oppression across a divided nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The threat posed by the recent rise of transnational non-state armed groups does not fit easily within either of the two basic paradigms for state responses to violence. The crime paradigm focuses on the interception of demonstrable immediate threats to the safety of others. Its aim is to protect specific persons and members of the general public from violence by identifiable individuals, who may be acting alone or in concert. In pursuit of this aim, the state uses police operations and the criminal justice system. Both of these tools are governed by human rights principles that significantly constrain state power. A state may not restrict liberty unless it has demonstrable evidence that an individual may pose a danger to others. It may not use force if other means will be effective to stop a threat. If using force is unavoidable, it must be the minimum amount necessary. Furthermore, a state generally may not take life unless no other measure will intercept an immediate threat to life"--
