Book Why We Act Like Canadians

Download or read book Why We Act Like Canadians written by Pierre Berton and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this challenging book, written as a series of open letters to an American friend, Pierre Berton reaches into his profound knowledge of the country’s history and geography to dissect, praise, explain and occasionally criticize the national character. He does so, not with abstract opinions but with apt and colourful examples taken from the past and the present: Sam Steele’s gold rush censorship of the Turkish Whirlwind Danseuse; Ontario’s grudging acceptance of beer in three Toronto ballparks; New York’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade; Lorne Greene’s rueful return to Toronto; William Van Horne’s tirade against winter carnivals; the role of Kentucky in the War of 1812; W.A.C. Bennett’s surprising takeover of the B.C. Electric Company on the day of its president’s funeral. All these apparently disconnected incidents are woven into a carefully thought-out dissection of the national character, a distillation of more than thirty years of Berton research.

Book A Story of Resilience

Download or read book A Story of Resilience written by Edith Ngene Kambere and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, I weave together personal stories of my struggles growing up in an African culture at a time when education for girls was given little consideration, and there were stories of the traumas of surviving a political coup and a violent relocating, with stories of other women who experienced their own pains of relocating. The book offers knowledge and insight to mental health and other professionals who work closely with these women who are involved in the struggle of integrating into new Canadian communities while carrying the baggage of pre- and postmigration trauma. Although my experience is not unique among other immigrant womens stories, it has given me a reason to appreciate each day that God blesses me with life, shelter, freedom from gunshots, and an abundance of resources. I am ever grateful that as immigrants and professional workers read this book, which is an interweaving of the comments of African immigrant women, excerpts from my own personal story, and the insights of others, they will encounter new perspectives about African immigrant women (hereafter AIR women). Specifically, the section of shared stories of pre- and postmigration trauma will shed knowledge on how to begin work with a clientele who come from similar backgrounds. I especially hope that readers will be encouraged to thankfully reflect on their own experiences as people who have the privilege of living in a country that is safe.

Book Canada

Download or read book Canada written by Mike Myers and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comedy superstar Mike Myers writes from the (true patriot) heart about his relationship with his beloved Canada. Mike Myers is a world-renowned actor, director and writer, and the man behind some of the most memorable comic characters of our time. But as he says: "no description of me is truly complete without saying I'm a Canadian." He has often winked and nodded to Canada in his outrageously accomplished body of work, but now he turns the spotlight full-beam on his homeland. His hilarious and heartfelt new book is part memoir, part history and pure entertainment. It is Mike Myers' funny and thoughtful analysis of what makes Canada Canada, Canadians Canadians and what being Canadian has always meant to him. His relationship with his home and native land continues to deepen and grow, he says. In fact, American friends have actually accused him of enjoying being Canadian--and he's happy to plead guilty as charged. A true patriot who happens to be an expatriate, Myers is in a unique position to explore Canada from within and without. With this, his first book, Mike brings his love for Canada to the fore at a time when the country is once again looking ahead with hope and national pride. Canada is a wholly subjective account of Mike's Canadian experience. Mike writes, "Some might say, 'Why didn't you include this or that?' I say there are 35 million stories waiting to be told in this country, and my book is only one of them." This beautifully designed book is illustrated in colour (and not color) throughout, and its visual treasures include personal photographs and Canadiana from the author's own collection.

Book Multiculturalism and Immigration in Canada

Download or read book Multiculturalism and Immigration in Canada written by Elspeth Cameron and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiculturalism in Canada offers a solid introduction to the history and development of the ideology of multiculturalism in Canada. This ideology, which has become the primary designator of Canadian society, began in the early 1970s when vocal elements in the population who were neither English nor French strongly responded to the investigations of the Committee on Bilingualism and Biculturalism. Given Canada's early racist tendencies, the establishment of multiculturalism was a remarkable shift in public thinking. Many issues associated with immigration have arisen in the public debates around multiculturalism. Some people are convinced that it is a pernicious ideology that enforces the ghettoisation of those different from the mainstream. Others see dangers in the way some aspects of multiculturalism are merely tokens of an all-inclusive society. Still others contend that the voices of ethnicities aside from those of the two charter groups -- English and French -- are scarcely heard and, that worse, those marginalised voices are appropriated by mainstream writers. On the whole, however, Canadians -- especially younger Canadians -- welcome a liberal outlook that is inclusive of a wide variety of ethnicities. For them, and for many immigrants, Canada is a society that is multiple and layered, one rich in meaning. They tend to see Canada as a microcosm of the larger world, one that presents a useful model of tolerance for the world at large. Increasingly, marginalised new Canadians are excelling in the arts communities, telling all Canadians what various aspects of the culture shock of transplantation feels like. This book includes a representative sample of their works.
