Download or read book In the Midst written by Sandy Tritt and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You know, you should edit an anthology about COVID-19. Capture the raw emotions and coping mechanisms of people from all over the world--while the pandemic is still ongoing." I shook my head to rid it of that crazy thought. It came back stronger. "Millions of people throughout the world are experiencing the same emotions--anger, anxiety, fear, sadness. But they don't realize their feelings are universal--truly universal." I couldn't argue with that, so I ran a small ad, thinking I'd be out a few bucks and that little voice in my head would finally take a nap. Instead, hundreds of submissions from new writers to well-published authors and from art students to world-renowned artists poured in. Entries arrived from six continents (all but Antarctica!). From throughout the U.S. and Canada. From South Africa and Zimbabwe. From Australia and New Zealand. From England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands. From India and Bangladesh. From Argentina. Writers and artists from ten years old to somewhere in their nineties sent poems, original artwork, fiction, essays, photographs, and scripts. As I read, my heart ached for people suffering in so many ways from this unprecedented situation. But these entries carried much more than tears. They also showed the resilience of the human spirit. Many offered encouragement. Some shared ways of coping--especially creative ways, such as taking up new hobbies. Others found humor in the quest for toilet paper, the mandate to "wash your hands," and hair--from new hairdos and natural hair colors of those who can no longer see their hairdressers to COVID cuts for those who took the problem into their own hands. Some described new skills or practices that have improved their lives--things they will retain long after the pandemic is over. And many showed appreciation to the ones who've sacrificed to keep the world moving. What ties them all together? The universal experience of living in isolation and anxiety during a global pandemic with no end in sight. People are in crisis and need to share their experiences and imaginative solutions. Painstaking decisions were made to cut down the deluge of entries to this final selection of 100 pieces representing 84 authors and artists. I've always said that when you share your art or your writing, you share your soul. And we now celebrate the courageous people who have bared their souls to give you a glimpse into their lives. While all the entries are in English, many are flavored by British spelling and punctuation, American dialect, or some combination thereof. To protect the ethnic and cultural seasoning of the contributors, we have edited with a light hand, keeping the vernacular of the country of origin. I hope you are as touched as I have been by these honest, from-the-gut reactions while still IN THE MIDST of this historic pandemic. Hopefully, we'll see our way out of this soon, and this anthology will become a collection to help future generations understand exactly what it was like to endure separation from friends and family, shutdowns of schools, churches, and "non-essential" businesses, and, of course, the fear and suffering caused by illness and death. Thank you for reading. We do not expect that every entry will entertain every reader, but we are sure each reader will be profoundly affected by at least a few of the entries. NOTE: The cover was designed and created by Lana Hunneyball. The artwork featured on the card faces are among the more than 30 original creations or photos included within the anthology.

This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of poems, Frances Donovan presents a charged portrait of a woman of erotic complexity - the multiple attractions, the demands, the fantasies. "...you go with him down to the water's edge / and slide in and swim / and grab those lanky limbs of his and pull." Passion, anger, lust, envy, defiance, and cherishing can be found in these poems that widen from the personal to encompass myth. Sappho is there, as is Juno who looked after the women of Rome, and Diana, goddess of the hunt. There is hunting for love, there is basking in love, there is longing: "I wish I could send you/the bright blue sky of my body / cut loose from its moorings - / not the snake skin or the snake / but the buzzing within me/that has no name." It's sumptuous to plunge into these poems, most of which occur at the shore. -Grey Held, author of Two Star General and Spilled Milk The border-world of Frances Donovan's chapbook is sensually extravagant, lush with detail. Every seashore, highway, and body has its own messages to impart: "the buzz of the road," "the tiny singing in the trees," "the touch of your foot / makes me a beehive." Donovan's translation of these uncanny communiqués often reminds me of early H.D. Perhaps it's the locations, such as the "island of golden pears / I could not choose from, / and so lost them all." Or maybe it's Donovan's liminal condition of being attracted to many kinds of beauty. In any case, these poems are floral and gritty, Hellenistic and mundane, in unlikely but appealing proportions. -Lesley Wheeler, author of Radioland

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six were taken. Eleven years later, five come back--with no idea of where they've been. A riveting mystery for fans of We Were Liars. Eleven years ago, six kindergartners went missing without a trace. After all that time, the people left behind moved on, or tried to. Until today. Today five of those kids return. They're sixteen, and they are . . . fine. Scarlett comes home and finds a mom she barely recognizes, and doesn't really recognize the person she's supposed to be, either. But she thinks she remembers Lucas. Lucas remembers Scarlett, too, except they're entirely unable to recall where they've been or what happened to them. Neither of them remember the sixth victim, Max--the only one who hasn't come back. Which leaves Max's sister, Avery, wanting answers. She wants to find her brother--dead or alive--and isn't buying this whole memory-loss story. But as details of the disappearance begin to unfold, no one is prepared for the truth. This unforgettable novel--with its rich characters, high stakes, and plot twists--will leave readers breathless.

Book When Home Is Not Safe

Book excerpt: Even if you haven't been hurt by domestic violence, someone you know has and wishes they could tell you about it. Perhaps you are a therapist, teacher, academic, or social worker who wants to help those who are suffering. Or maybe you are in an abusive relationship and need to know that you are not alone. The poems, memoirs, and creative nonfiction pieces collected here tell of real incidents of abuse, as well as of those who left destructive and unsalvageable relationships. The beauty and truth of the language, as well as the honesty and courage, set this anthology apart from self-help manuals and academic treatises on domestic violence. This book offers a path forward to healing, health and fulfillment, using the power of art to give voice where voice has been stifled, forgotten, overlooked or denied.

Book Understanding the Well Being of LGBTQI Populations

Download or read book Understanding the Well Being of LGBTQI Populations written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2021-01-23 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in prevalence and visibility of sexually gender diverse (SGD) populations illuminates the need for greater understanding of the ways in which current laws, systems, and programs affect their well-being. Individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, transgender, non-binary, queer, or intersex, as well as those who express same-sex or -gender attractions or behaviors, will have experiences across their life course that differ from those of cisgender and heterosexual individuals. Characteristics such as age, race and ethnicity, and geographic location intersect to play a distinct role in the challenges and opportunities SGD people face. Understanding the Well-Being of LGBTQI+ Populations reviews the available evidence and identifies future research needs related to the well-being of SDG populations across the life course. This report focuses on eight domains of well-being; the effects of various laws and the legal system on SGD populations; the effects of various public policies and structural stigma; community and civic engagement; families and social relationships; education, including school climate and level of attainment; economic experiences (e.g., employment, compensation, and housing); physical and mental health; and health care access and gender-affirming interventions. The recommendations of Understanding the Well-Being of LGBTQI+ Populations aim to identify opportunities to advance understanding of how individuals experience sexuality and gender and how sexual orientation, gender identity, and intersex status affect SGD people over the life course.

  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book Beautiful Raft written by Tina Barry and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What I love so much about Beautiful Raft is how Barry's curiosity turned into a fury-fueled exploration of how and why the partners of famous men are often ignored." -Robert Vaughan, Funhouse, Addicts and Basements, Rift (with Kathy Fish) In 1946, the artist Marc Chagall and his young lover Virginia Haggard moved from New York City to rural High Falls, New York. Local newspapers and magazines made much of Chagall's arrival, but Haggard, the tall, pretty woman in the photos with her daughter Jean McNeil, was given little more than a name. The prose poems and hybrids in Tina Barry's Beautiful Raft, written in Haggard's and McNeil's voices, allow the women to tell their story. "From blini 'in a cape of butter, tipping a caviar hat' to visits from Pierre Matisse who 'leans against an ivory-carved walking stick he doesn't need, ' Barry offers a poetic succession of taut, highly charged prose poems. Kaleidoscopic in style, the book shifts from page to page, casting a different light on this loving but uneasy relationship in this deftly constructed and haunting collection." -Alexandra van de Kamp, Kiss/Hierarchy

Book excerpt: "These poems are fierce. Turbulent. Forceful. Astute. In Becoming Persephone, Mary Ann Honaker has put together a collection that tears at the fabric of those moments in our lives that become us, that render our lives, that remember us, sometimes when we don't want to remember them. There is darkness here, but not desperation. Love and anti-love. Pain, certainly, but also perception. The poems are wonderfully constructed and sharply stated, giving voice to things that drag us down to our personal hells, but also ultimately insightfully and intelligently facing them down. They develop into hymns of maturation, accepting that death is a rebirth, the underworld goddess holding the sheaf of new life, understanding a way of being that has become, like her Jazz Birds acknowledge, 'All right, all right, all right.'"--Kirk Judd, author of My People Was MusicMary Ann Honaker is the author of It Will Happen Like This (YesNo Press, 2015). Her work has appeared in 2 Bridges, Drunk Monkeys, Euphony, Juked, Little Patuxent Review, Off the Coast, Van Gogh's Ear, and elsewhere. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Mary Ann holds an MFA in creative writing from Lesley University. She currently lives in Beckley, West Virginia, but considers Salem, Massachusetts, where she lived for many years, her second home.
