Book Development Document for Effluent Limitations Guidelines and New Source Performance Standards for the Basic Fertilizer Chemicals Segment of the Fertilizer Manufacturing Point Source Category

Download or read book Development Document for Effluent Limitations Guidelines and New Source Performance Standards for the Basic Fertilizer Chemicals Segment of the Fertilizer Manufacturing Point Source Category written by United States. Environmental Protection Agency. Office of Air and Water Programs. Effluent Guidelines Division and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the findings of an extensive study of the fertilizer industry for the purpose of developing effluent limitation guidelines for existing point sources and standards of performance and pretreatment standards for new sources to implement sections 304, 306, and 307 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, as amended (33 U.S.C. 1551, 1314, and 1316, 86 Stat. 816 et. seg.)(the "Act"). The study included a detailed and extensive exemplary plant survey, contacts with consultants and government officials, and literature search. The industry survey involved data gathering, sample collection and analysis, and personal visitation with responsible plant operating personnel to obtain first-hand information on treatment technology in commercial use and technology in development and pilot plant stages. The three main outputs from the study were: industry categorization, recommendations on effluent guuidelines, and definition of treatment technology. The fertilizer industry was divided into five categories for more meaningful separation and division of waste water treatment and development of effluent guidelines. These subcategories are phosphate, ammonia, urea, ammonium nitrate and nitric acid products. The phosphate subcategory includes all ancillary operations necessary for phosphate production (e.g. sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid). Effluent guidelines for best practicable control technology currently available, best available technology economically achievable, and new source performance standards are recommended for each category. Treatment technologies such as either in-process or end-of-process add on units are available or are in advanced development stages to enable existent and future fertilizer plants to meet the recommended effluent guidelines.

This book was released on 1998-03-31 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fertilizer Manual, 3rd Edition, is a new, fully updated, comprehensive reference on the technology of fertilizer production. The manual contains engineering flow diagrams and process requirements for all major fertilizer processes including ammonia, urea, phosphates, potassium products and many others. Environmental considerations are addressed clearly. Equally important, the manual includes chapters on fertilizer use, production and distribution economics, raw materials, and the status of the fertilizer industry with demand-supply projections. Professionals involved with any phase of fertilizer production, use, marketing, or distribution will find this book valuable.

Book Nitrate Agriculture and the Environment

Download or read book Nitrate Agriculture and the Environment written by T. M. Addiscott and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is widespread public concern about the effects of nitrate derived from farming on water quality and public health. But research on nitrate during the past decade has revealed wide discrepancies between public perceptions and reality. The main problems from nitrate are ecological changes in coastal and estuarine waters and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. This gas, largely derived from nitrate, is a threat to the ozone layer in the stratosphere and is also a greenhouse gas. This book builds on Farming, Fertilizers and the Nitrate Problem (CABI, 1991) by Addiscott, Whitmore and Powlson but has been restructured to take account of new developments and to bring out more clearly the role of politicians and economists in the 'nitrate problem'.

Download or read book The World s Greatest Fix written by G. J. Leigh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel, this gives the very early history of how human ingenuity overcame the risk of famine through productive agriculture. Starting with a layman's guide to the chemistry of nitrogen fixation, the book goes on to show how humans emerged from nomadic lifestyles and began developing towns and settlements. When they for the first time began planting the same fields year after year, they noticed quickly the need to ensure soil fertility. But how? The method they came up with is still in use to this day.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The panel on Nitrates of the Environmental Studies Board, at the request of the Environmental Protection Agency, evaluated nitrates as potential environmental pollutants. A review of the current scientific and tecnological knowledge on the nitrogen cycle is given: physical and chemical properties; biological processes; sources, distribution, and biogeochemical transformation of nitrates; techniques for analysis and measurement of nitrogen compounds; mass-balance nitrogen studies; effects of nitrate exposures on plants, animals, and the inanimate environment; and ecological problems of nitrates on human health (carcinogenic nitrosamines, atmospheric nitric acid), ecological effects of nitrate pollutants (nitrogen fertilizers in the soil, nitrogen eutrophication of lakes, acid rains), toxic effects of nitrates, and nitrogen-related ozone depletion of the atmosphere. Control techniques, preventive measures, economic factors and policy considerations of nitrate pollution are discussed.
