Download or read book NIST SP 800 111 Guide to Storage Encryption Technologies for End User Devices written by National Institute National Institute of Standards and Technology and published by . This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NIST SP 800-111 November 2007 In today''s computing environment, there are many threats to the confidentiality of information stored on end user devices, such as personal computers, consumer devices (e.g., personal digital assistant, smart phone), and removable storage media (e.g., universal serial bus [USB] flash drive, memory card, external hard drive, writeable CD or DVD). Some threats are unintentional, such as human error, while others are intentional. Intentional threats are posed by people with many different motivations, including causing mischief and disruption and committing identity theft and other fraud. A common threat against end user devices is device loss or theft. Someone with physical access to a device has many options for attempting to view or copy the information stored on the device. Why buy a book you can download for free? First you gotta find it and make sure it''s the latest version, not always easy. Then you gotta print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people - and its outta paper - and the toner is low (take out the toner cartridge, shake it, then put it back). If it''s just 10 pages, no problem, but if it''s a 250-page book, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. An engineer that''s paid $75 an hour has to do this himself (who has assistant''s anymore?). If you are paid more than $10 an hour and use an ink jet printer, buying this book will save you money. It''s much more cost-effective to just order the latest version from Amazon.com This public domain material is published by 4th Watch Books. Download or read book IBM System i Security Protecting i5 OS Data with Encryption written by Yessong Johng and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2008-07-24 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulatory and industry-specific requirements, such as SOX, Visa PCI, HIPAA, and so on, require that sensitive data must be stored securely and protected against unauthorized access or modifications. Several of the requirements state that data must be encrypted. IBM® i5/OS® offers several options that allow customers to encrypt data in the database tables. However, encryption is not a trivial task. Careful planning is essential for successful implementation of data encryption project. In the worst case, you would not be able to retrieve clear text information from encrypted data. This IBM Redbooks® publication is designed to help planners, implementers, and programmers by providing three key pieces of information: Part 1, "Introduction to data encryption" on page 1, introduces key concepts, terminology, algorithms, and key management. Understanding these is important to follow the rest of the book. If you are already familiar with the general concepts of cryptography and the data encryption aspect of it, you may skip this part. Part 2, "Planning for data encryption" on page 37, provides critical information for planning a data encryption project on i5/OS. Part 3, "Implementation of data encryption" on page 113, provides various implementation scenarios with a step-by-step guide.
