Download or read book Bollywood s New Woman written by Megha Anwer and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bollywood’s New Woman examines Bollywood’s construction and presentation of the Indian Woman since the 1990s. The groundbreaking collection illuminates the contexts and contours of this contemporary figure that has been identified in sociological and historical discourses as the “New Woman.” On the one hand, this figure is a variant of the fin de siècle phenomenon of the “New Woman” in the United Kingdom and the United States. In the Indian context, the New Woman is a distinct articulation resulting from the nation’s tryst with neoliberal reform, consolidation of the middle class, and the ascendency of aggressive Hindu Right politics.
Download or read book The Edge of Power written by Tuhin Sinha and published by Hachette India. This book was released on 2014-01-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heinous rape of Nirbhaya has jolted the Indian nation out of its apathy. But rape and violence against women are only symptomatic of a deeper malaise that ails the nation ? the total collapse of governance under the weak and vacillating prime minister, Devender Singh, and his Indian Democratic Party. Ironically, aiding the ruling party to cling to power is a casual and largely indifferent Opposition, led by the venal Ravi Nehra. So when activist Daivik Verma and Bollywood?s leading lady Catherine Khan decide to challenge the existing system by floating a new political party, it is seen as a ray of hope. But lack of funds and cadre-support thwart their efforts; their only recourse now is to approach the enigmatic and reclusive Shruti Ranjan, who had sworn off politics three years earlier. Will Nirbhaya?s gruesome rape and subsequent death bring a disillusioned Shruti Ranjan back into the political fray? Will the land of great leaders like Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka and Akbar, finally get the dynamic Prime Minister she so badly needs? Featuring Shruti Ranjan ? the immensely popular protagonist of the best-selling The Edge of Desire ? in a resurgent avatar, The Edge of Power is a powerful enquiry into the underbelly of Indian politics, and raises important questions about the funding of Indian political parties.
Download or read book Gender and Violence in Historical and Contemporary Perspectives written by Jyoti Atwal and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a range of issues and phenomena around gender-related violence in specific cultural and regional conditions. Using an interdisciplinary approach, it discusses historical and contemporary developments that trigger violence while highlighting the social conditions, practices, discourses, and cultural experiences of gender-related violence in India. Beginning with the issues of gender-based violence within the traditional context of Indian history and colonial encounters, it moves on to explore the connections between gender, minorities, marginalisation, sexuality, and violence, especially violence against Dalit women, disabled women, and transgender people. It traces and interprets similarities and differences as well as identifies social causes of potential conflicts. Further, it investigates the forms and mechanisms of political, economic, and institutional violence in the legitimation or de-legitimation of traditional gender roles. The chapters deal with sexual violence, violence within marriage and family, influence of patriarchal forces within factory-based gender violence, and global processes such as demand-driven surrogacy and the politics of literary and cinematic representations of gender-based violence. The book situates relevant debates about India and underlines the global context in the making of the gender bias that leads to violence both in the public and private domains. An important contribution to feminist scholarship, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of gender studies, women’s studies, history, sociology, and political science.
Download or read book The Memory Marketplace written by Emilie Pine and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when cultural memory becomes a commodity? Who owns the memory? In The Memory Marketplace, Emilie Pine explores how memory is performed both in Ireland and abroad by considering the significant body of contemporary Irish theatre that contends with its own culture and history. Analyzing examples from this realm of theatre, Pine focuses on the idea of witnesses, both as performers on stage and as members of the audience. Whose memories are observed in these transactions, and how and why do performances prioritize some memories over others? What does it mean to create, rehearse, perform, and purchase the theatricalization of memory? The Memory Marketplace shows this transaction to be particularly fraught in the theatricalization of traumatic moments of cultural upheaval, such as the child sexual abuse scandal in Ireland. In these performances, the role of empathy becomes key within the marketplace dynamic, and Pine argues that this empathy shapes the kinds of witnesses created. The complexities and nuances of this exchange—subject and witness, spectator and performer, consumer and commodified—provide a deeper understanding of the crucial role theatre plays in shaping public understanding of trauma, memory, and history.
Download or read book Rape and Politics written by D. Raveendranathan and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-07-11 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration carried out against a person without that person's consent. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority, or against a person who is incapable of giving valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, has an intellectual disability, or is below the legal age of consent. It is means of intimidation and control which function to perpetuate the subordinate status of women, and now, children in patriarch societies. In particular, an 11-year-old girl’s dead body was found in a waste bin with 80 wounds in Gujarat. Rape is an anti-social, cruel, heinous activity where protesters are mostly women by candle-light marches, slogan-raising in market squares. The participation of men are rarely seen, and this attitude is very unfortunate, irresponsible, highly atrocious committed against innocent girls. As per the Prime Minister of India, Rape is Rape; do not politicise it (said on Thursday 19th April 2018 during his London trip). Rape is the most heinous crime committed against women in India. According to the National Crime Report Bureau’s 2013 annual report, 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012. Out of which 24,470 were committed by someone known to the victim. A total of 34,651 cases of rape were reported in India in 2015. Out of these, in 33,098 cases the offenders were known to the victims, revealed the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. When rape is classified under Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code, why the Government is not taking strict actions against the perpetrators? An amendment with mutatis mutandis having more specific punishments and the powers for the quick disposal of the cases should be enacted with immediate effect. In different parts of the world, the punishment for rape ranges from life imprisonment, death sentences to castration. But in India, the Government do not seem to take it as a serious crime. In many cases, political interference is the main cause of delay. "No culprit will be spared," the PM said amid anger over Kathua and Unnao Rape Cases. When the accused will be punished? Under the present practice, it will take many years to dispose of the case. However, I tried to create awareness among the future generation to save our daughters, sisters and women from this heinous crime.

Download or read book Victims Access to Justice written by Pamela Cox and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have many victim-centred policy initiatives met with so little success? How have those initiatives unfolded differently in different global jurisdictions over different periods of time? This book aims to address these questions. Building on a major research project exploring victims’ access to justice over time and place, Victims' Access to Justice considers the potentialities for victims’ participation in criminal justice systems and in victim programmes both in historical and comparative context. It considers a range of topics: ways of identifying and accommodating victims’ needs and senses of justice; the impacts for criminal justice systems of seeking to accommodate these; and the ways in which adversarial criminal justice systems, in particular, may enable or inhibit victim participation. This is essential reading for all those engaged in understanding and working with victims of crime.
Download or read book Write Feelings written by Suresh Pattali and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-11 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: News today is sensational, fast and often fake — attributes Suresh has been taught and trained to avoid. But there is a fourth attribute to news that journalists don’t wear on their sleeves. It defies all stereotypical notions associated with the profession. Emotion, it is. Newsmen are reckoned to be detached and untouched. Almost Zen-like. They are the ones who can cover a gruesome tragedy and then head straight out to have a hearty meal. On many levels, the intrepid journalist is not much different from a beat cop: Both encounter the worst of mankind. Both are exposed to the scum of the world. Both put on a brave face, admirably reticent to tragedies and comedies. But beneath the façade, there is a beating heart — one that pines for that little girl who was raped and murdered; one that sobs for that beautiful woman whose husband was murdered by her own father; and one that prays for the safety of those twelve hapless boys trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand. Write Feelings is all about this. It brings out the emotion that Suresh had bottled up during four decades of his journalistic existence. These are words that the heart refuses to say out loud but gush out in the comfort of solitude. A cathartic release.
