Book Nineteenth century European Paintings at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute

Download or read book Nineteenth century European Paintings at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute written by Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and published by Clark Art Institute. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core of the Clark's collection was assembled by Robert Sterling Clark (1877-1956), who once declared, "I like all kinds of art if it is good of its kind." This monumental, two-volume publication is the first fully documented catalogue of the Institute's collection of European paintings. The quality of this collection reflects the founder's philosophy in its inclusion of masterpieces as diverse as William-Adolphe Bouguereau's Nymphs and Satyr (1873) and Pierre-Auguste Renoir's A Box at the Theater (1880); works by academic painters such as Jean-Léon Gérôme; Barbizon painters such as Camille Corot and Jean-François Millet; and the Impressionists Camille Pissarro and Edgar Degas. More recent acquisitions include Théodore Rousseau's Farm in the Landes (1844-67) and Claude Monet's Rouen Cathedral (1894), and works by John Constable and J. M. W. Turner. Published on the 100th anniversary of Sterling Clark's first purchase of a European painting, these handsome volumes document each of the 374 paintings in the collection, with essays by prominent scholars, detailed bibliographic and art historical apparatus, technical notes, and over 450 color illustrations. Distributed for the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute

Book excerpt: Probably the most influential and popular Swiss landscape painter of the 19th century, Alexandre Calame (1810-1864) is renowned for his grand Alpine views. Painted with dramatic effects of light and atmosphere, these paintings were based on sharply observed details taken from close natural study and depict recognizable locations. Calame visited France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and England, making outdoor oil sketches from which he then created finished paintings in his studio. Calame first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1835, and his works appealed to the growing number of Alpine tourists and were purchased by King Louis-Philippe and Napoleon. This handsome book focuses on Calame’s oil sketches--many of which have never been published in color--in addition to several paintings and related drawings and prints. With essays that discuss Calame's landscapes in the context of 19th-century trends in European art and culture, it also features works by Swiss artists Franois Diday, Barthlemy Menn, and Robert Znd.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguished by his brilliantly energetic brushwork, Giovanni Boldini (1842-1931) was one of the most prominent Italian artists of the late 19th century. Still, he has remained little known beyond his native country. This beautiful book is the first published on Boldini in English in a generation and accompanies the first major exhibition of his works outside of Europe. Born in Ferrara, Boldini moved to Paris in 1871, where he lived for the rest of his life. This important volume focuses on his work from 1871 to 1886, which reflects the influence of his contemporaries--Degas, Manet, Caillebotte, Meissonier, and Fortuny, among others. It features Boldini’s fanciful paintings made for the art market and depictions of the city around him--from the bustling streets and squares to cafs, theaters, and concert halls--as well as paintings of friends and models, and a selection of later portraits that established him as one of the quintessential portraitists of the Belle poque.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brothers Sterling and Stephen Clark—heirs to the Singer sewing machine fortune—were among the twentieth century’s most influential art collectors. This volume examines their magnificent collections, their personal lives and public profiles, and their significant roles in the history of American museums. While the brothers shared a love for great art, they collected in different ways. Sterling was a private collector; his French Impressionist masterpieces, including thirty-eight Renoirs, and works by such American artists as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Frederic Remington, and Mary Cassatt now form the distinguished collection of the Clark. Stephen, a businessman and museum trustee, acquired modern works by such masters as Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Vincent van Gogh, often with specific museum collections in mind—including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Yale University Art Gallery. Handsomely produced, this book features over two hundred illustrations of the works from Sterling’s and Stephen’s collections. It also includes essays by distinguished scholars, an illustrated chronology, and a previously unpublished checklist of works purchased by Stephen Clark.

Book Bonjour Monsieur Courbet

Download or read book Bonjour Monsieur Courbet written by Sarah Lees and published by Clark Art Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 02 Gustave Courbet’s 1854 painting The Meeting (also known as Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet!) depicts his greatest patron, Alfred Bruyas (1821-1877), welcoming the artist to his hometown of Montpellier, in the south of France. As one of the foremost collectors of contemporary art in France, Bruyas’s tastes ranged from romanticism to realism, and he collected both traditional and what was then avant-garde art. This beautifully illustrated book features ninety-four works from Bruyas’s celebrated collection, including nine masterpieces by Courbet as well as important paintings, drawings, and sculptures by such leading French artists of the period as Delacroix, Ingres, Géricault, Millet, Corot, Rousseau, and Barye. The accompanying texts examine Bruyas’s role as one of the few mid-nineteenth-century private collectors of contemporary art and the significance of his patronage of living artists as well as the well-known but little-scrutinized relationship between Bruyas and Courbet. A newly discovered critique of the renowned collection, written by the influential artist Paul Signac some twenty years after Bruyas’s death, is also presented.Sarah Lees is assistant curator of paintings at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. This book is the catalogue for an exhibition organized by FRAME (French Regional and American Museum Exchange) on view at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond (March 26 to June 13, 2004), the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts (June 27 to September 6, 2004), the Dallas Museum of Art (October 17, 2004, to January 2, 2005) and to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (January 22 to April 3, 2005). Book excerpt: Filled with beautiful works by Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and other Impressionist painters, this richly illustrated book showcases artistic portrayals of France's millinery trade during the Belle Époque. Filled with beautiful works by Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and other Impressionist painters, this richly illustrated book showcases artistic portrayals of France's millinery trade during the Belle Époque. Though best known for his depictions of dancers and bathers, Edgar Degas repeatedly returned to the subject of millinery over the course of three decades. In masterpieces such as The Millinery Shop (1879-86) and The Milliners (ca. 1898), he captured scenes of milliners fashioning and women wearing elaborate, colorful hats. Featuring sumptuous paintings, pastels, and preparatory drawings by Degas, Cassatt, Manet, Renoir, and Toulouse-Lautrec, among others, this generously illustrated book surveys the millinery industry of 19th-century Paris. Peppered throughout with photographs, posters, and prints of French hats, this book includes essays that explore Degas's particular interest in the millinery trade; the tension between modern fashion and reverence for history and the grand art-historical tradition; a chronicle of Parisian milliners from Caroline Reboux to Coco Chanel; and examples of how the millinery trade is depicted in literature. Brilliantly linking together the worlds of industry, art, and fashion, this groundbreaking book examines the fundamental role of hats and hat-makers in 19th-century culture.
