Book excerpt: Janfamily is a group of young artists who share a unique approach to life. They explore the things that surround them, and together they create alternatives to everyday routines. Janfamily: Suggestions for Take Overs, their first book, is a manifesto of their philosophy: it is a how-to book, a list of proposals on how to relate to our own environment. By offering solutions to problems such as How to soften a challenge and How not to do what you did yesterday, we are invited to revisit the simple things in life that are often ignored or unnoticed. Janfamily: Suggestion for Take Overs is a humorous yet touching presentation of an innovative way of looking at the world.

Book Sandfuture

  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2021-09-14

  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Sandfuture written by Justin Beal and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of the life and work of the architect Minoru Yamasaki that leads the author to consider how (and for whom) architectural history is written. Sandfuture is a book about the life of the architect Minoru Yamasaki (1912–1986), who remains on the margins of history despite the enormous influence of his work on American architecture and society. That Yamasaki’s most famous projects—the Pruitt-Igoe apartments in St. Louis and the original World Trade Center in New York—were both destroyed on national television, thirty years apart, makes his relative obscurity all the more remarkable. Sandfuture is also a book about an artist interrogating art and architecture’s role in culture as New York changes drastically after a decade bracketed by terrorism and natural disaster. From the central thread of Yamasaki’s life, Sandfuture spirals outward to include reflections on a wide range of subjects, from the figure of the architect in literature and film and transformations in the contemporary art market to the perils of sick buildings and the broader social and political implications of how, and for whom, cities are built. The result is at once sophisticated in its understanding of material culture and novelistic in its telling of a good story.

Book Conflict Trauma and the Media

Download or read book Conflict Trauma and the Media written by Guy Hodgson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict in all its guises is usually at the centre of news and whenever wars, natural disasters or divisions erupt, the media are there to report, record and commemorate. This collection of essays explores the complicated relationship between the messengers bringing news of catastrophic upheaval and the recipients of that message. It concentrates on the journalists, photographers and film-makers, reflecting not only the motivations behind their work, but also the psychological consequences of witnessing extreme suffering. The audience interpret the news according to their circumstance, be it with anger sympathy or with compassion-fatigued indifference. The book explores that reaction, which is always more nuanced than anticipated. Finally, the modern communication circle is completed by exploring the potential of the media to diminish conflict. This is demonstrated by the media bringing together communities that are either geographically or historically divided.

Book The Persistence of Dance

Download or read book The Persistence of Dance written by Erin Brannigan and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2023-11-28 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a category of choreographic practice with a lineage stretching back to mid-20th century North America that has re-emerged since the early 1990s: dance as a contemporary art medium. Such work belongs as much to the gallery as does video art or sculpture and is distinct from both performance art and its history as well as from theater-based dance. The Persistence of Dance: Choreography as Concept and Material in Contemporary Art clarifies the continuities and differences between the second-wave dance avant-garde in the 1950s‒1970s and the third-wave starting in the 1990s. Through close readings of key artists such as Maria Hassabi, Sarah Michelson, Boris Charmatz, Meg Stuart, Philipp Gehmacher, Adam Linder, Agatha Gothe-Snape, Shelley Lasica and Latai Taumoepeau, The Persistence of Dance traces the relationship between the third-wave and gallery-based work. Looking at these artists highlights how the discussions and practices associated with “conceptual dance” resonate with the categories of conceptual and post-conceptual art as well as with the critical work on the function of visual art categories. Brannigan concludes that within the current post-disciplinary context, there is a persistence of dance and that a model of post-dance exists that encompasses dance as a contemporary art medium.

Book The Reluctant Narrator

Download or read book The Reluctant Narrator written by Ana Teixeira Pinto and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosion of interest in narrative practices since the end of the 20th century is predicated on the notion that life is storied, and the ideaas Jacques Ranciere put itthat the real must be fictionalized in order to be thought. Displacing the symbolic unity of high modernism, postmodernism rekindled an interest in the fictive, the chronicle and the anecdotal. Treating these two positions as poles of a recurring movement, The Reluctant Narrator surveys works that intertwine personal biography, historical events and stories that fell through the crevices of history, mapping narrative modes as they migrate across media. Co-published with the Museu Coleo Berardo, the exhibition catalog includes visual and textual narratives by 18 artists and writers including Kader Attia, Karl Holmqvist, Christoph Keller, Bojan arcevic, Hito Steyerl and others. With contributions by Erika Balsom, Sladja Blazan, Kerstin Stakemeier and Ana Teixeira Pinto.
