Book Niles s School History of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Niles s School History of the United States Classic Reprint written by Sanford Niles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Niles's School History of the United States In the preparation of this volume, my aim has been to include only those events which should be known to every citizen, together with such other matter as might have a tendency to deepen impressions, to broaden the view, or add to the interest. I have tried to make all statements clear and accurate; to treat the subject in such a manner as will leave the student with an abiding thirst for wider historical reading. So far as seemed possible, in a work of this grade, the relation of cause and effect has been kept in view, and it is believed that all who carefully study these pages will see that history is made up of related events. In speaking of the measures of political parties, and other organizations, I have endeavored to lift myself above prejudice; to give plain, uncolored statements. Some space has been given to the men who dwelt here before us, but much more to the every-day life of our own people, in different sections of our country, and at different periods of our history. The great inventions of the last hundred years have been noticed, and their marvelous influence more fully traced than is usual in works of this class; and care has been taken to convey the idea that the bloodless triumphs of peace are really as much a part of our country's history as are the triumphs of war. To awaken the spirit of patriotism is regarded as one of the ends to be reached in the study of history. Keeping this fact in view, the stirring words of our great poets have been introduced, to supplement or round out the stories of patriotism told in simple prose. The heroes of the home, the hospital, the flood, and the field, men and women alike, have been placed side by side - bright examples for the young to follow. It is believed that the use of the topics prepared for recitations and reviews, the test questions and exercises near the close of the book, will lead to the best results. Such a method of study and work as is here outlined places the pupil in the proper mental attitude, trains to self-reliance, gives a clear understanding of the subject, and a good command of language. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of the United States The object aimed at in the preparation of this book was to produce a systematic, brief, clear, and authentic history of the United States for the use of schools. The plan is simple. N o arbitrary division into historical periods and eras is employed, but each chapter embraces associated events and forms a natural link in an unbroken chain. A strictly chronological order of arrangement is followed, whereby occurrences are shown in their true relation to one another, and to their causes. The most important dates are made prominent in the text by a peculiar type. A condensed record of general progress is placed at the end of almost every chapter, designed to interest the pupil in the civil and domestic character of the country, and in employments, institutions, and ideas not directly connected with wars, politics, or national legislation. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School History of the United States It is also thought that some books by Southern authors are either unsuitable for the schoolroom, or lose their value by an attempt to be neutral, and hence colorless, on the great questions that have divided the sections, and that, compiling from Northern histories, they have fallen into many of their errors. For some twenty years I have been collecting material and pre paring myself for the task, studying earnestly not only the best of the current histories, but original sources of information as well, and diligently seeking to reach the exact truth on all disputed points. Born, reared, and educated on Southern soil, following for four years with youthful devotion the battle-flag of the Southern Confed cracy, for twelve years Secretary of the Southern Historical Society, and during all of these years devoting time and close attention to American history, I may claim that I have had some facilities for ascertaining facts, and some qualifications for preparing, a history of the United States which shall be acceptable to the South, and fit to be taught in her schools. Download or read book New School History of the United States of America Classic Reprint written by George Frederick Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New School History of the United States of America Eleven years and more have elapsed since the first publication of this text-book. This period has witnessed a series of grave transactions, and a surprising increase of the population, produci tions, and wealth of the country. It seemed indispensable to extend the narrative to the completion of the century since the surrender of the British at Yorktown assured American Independence. To do this, it was necessary to contract the story throughout, so that the volume might be kept within suitable limits. Matters of secondary importance have been omitted, and greater brevity of statement has been introduced where practicable, particularly in the earlier periods and the War of Secession. There is no longer necessity or propriety in treating the late mournful struggle with the same fulness as before. Moreover, the wondrous perspective of time has already diminished the prominence of many events. And has suffered minor details to melt into the haze of the receding landscape. Download or read book A History of the United States for Schools Classic Reprint written by Andrew Cunningham McLaughlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The aim of the authors in writing this book has been to present what seemed to them the main historical developments in American history, the knowledge of which will enable the pupil to understand 'he social, political, and economic institutions which he finds about him in this land wherein he lives. In doing this we have tried to use simple language, to show clearly the relation of one fact to another, and to keep the story constantly moving forward. We have sought to interest not by the selection of the merely entertaining facts which are often the things of least value, but by choice of the facts that have meant something in our growth as a nation. This is first of all a text-book and not a story-book. We make no apology for the omission of many of the yarns of American his tory. If history is worth teaching at all, it is worth teaching as causal, vital, meaning history. We heartily approve of reading his tory for mere pleasure. History is, we believe, in many of its high est literary forms, most delightful and valuable mere reading, but for serious study there are certain essentials which should not be disguised or palliated by facts which are only entertaining, and not essentially significant.
