Book excerpt: The life and work of Nikolay Lossky, as presented in this monograph, is based not only on biographical and bibliographical information, but, first and foremost is presented in a two-pronged approach, the personal and systematic, which employs spiritual theology in its methodology. Nikolay Lossky’s spiritual development is described in the first part. The structure of the subsequent two parts is indicative of the systematic approach. The third part is focused on Lossky’s systematic defense of mystical intuition from philosophical and theological viewpoints. The chapters in the next part include Lossky’s speculation concerning mystical intuition through an analysis of the nature of the mind and the need for a supernatural transformation into mystical intuition. The final or fourth part, again uses the systematic approach to analyze Lossky’s conception of the spiritual development of the personality. Nikolay Lossky, along with an entire generation of Russian emigrants in Europe, interpreted their presence as a call from Providence to renew a dialogue with the Christian West. The Russian emigrants continued to strive for cognition of the Absolute as well as familiarization with the Trinity of a personal God that can be understood through mystical intuition.

How can scholarship and advocacy address new forms of war or the slow, corrosive violence that belie democracy's promise to mitigate human suffering? To Veena Das, the answers to these question lie not in foundational ideas about human nature but in a close attention to the diverse ways in which the natural and the social mutually absorb each other on a daily basis. Textures of the Ordinary shows how anthropology finds a companionship with philosophy in the exploration of everyday life. Based on two decades of ethnographic work among low-income urban families in India, Das shows how the notion of texture aligns ethnography with the anthropological tone in Wittgenstein and Cavell, as well as in literary texts. Das shows that doing anthropology after Wittgenstein does not consist in taking over a new set of terms such as forms of life, language games, or private language from Wittgenstein’s philosophy. Instead, we must learn to see what eludes us in the everyday precisely because it is before our eyes. The book shows different routes of return to the everyday as it is corroded not only by catastrophic events but also by repetitive and routine violence within everyday life itself. As an alternative to normative ethics, this book develops ordinary ethics as attentiveness to the other and as the ability of small acts of care to stand up to horrific violence. Textures of the Ordinary offers a model of thinking in which concepts and experience are shown to be mutually vulnerable. With questions returned to repeatedly throughout the text and over a lifetime, this book is an intellectually intimate invitation into the ordinary, that which is most simple yet most difficult to perceive in our lives.

Subtle changes and refinements in Byzantine theology did find reflection in changes to the iconographic and stylistic conventions of Byzantine art. Modernity, as sleeping reason in Francisco Goya's painting, realizes that, although it thought that it was awake, it was producing monsters. We try to analyze post-secular philosophy from the point of view of Russian religious thought. We believe that such philosophers as Vladimir Soloviev, Pavel Florensky, Sergey Bulgakov, Nikolai Berdyaev, Georges Florovsky, and Semen Frank may be helpful for understanding and overcoming post-secular order. Their unique views on the relations between religion and philosophy, science, and social life are apparently missing in the current Western debates. It seems to us that Russian religious philosophy becomes surprisingly up-to-date and attractive in the contemporary world. We hope that the present volume will be a significant step forward in the inclusion of the heritage of Russian religious philosophy in contemporary debates.
