Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FRANCIS BULHOF "What was Modernism?" That is the title of an address delivered in June of 1960 by the eminent comparatist Harry Levin at Queen's University in King ston, Ontario.1 Apparently, more than a decade ago, in the eyes of this per ceptive analyst of literature and the arts, the modernist movement had become a thing of the past. Having acquired full citizenship in the republic of letters, modernism had outlived itself. The title of Harry Levin's lecture bears an obvious resemblance to that of Fritz Martini's book-length essay Was war Expressionismus?,2 which dealt exclusively with the German variant of the expressionist movement. In the case of German expressionism there is much dispute concerning the precise moment of its decline and fall, but the political conditions provide at least a crucial dividing line in the year 1933. The end of modernism, however, a far more comprehensive movement which was not just limited to one country, is not so easy to determine. And there is also still much discussion about its roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1970 the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands was celebrated in the King's Library of the British Museum with an ex hibition of Dutch clandestine printing. The books shown were part of the considerable collection assembled in the intervening years by Miss Anna Simoni in the course of her official duties in the Department. It has been decided that the size and quality of this collection justify the publication of a catalogue. For this, and the full indexes which have been provided, credit is also due to Miss Simoni. The British Library Board wishes to express its deep appreciation of the generosity of the donors and helpers whose names are mentioned in the introduction. K. B. Gardner Principal Keeper Department of Printed Books INTRODUCTION The Second World War saw German rule extended over many countries where most of the people were fundamentally opposed to the Nazi ide ology. In all these enslaved nations Resistance movements sprang up and they took various forms, one of the most important of which was the work of the illegal press. In the Netherlands, as elsewhere, under ground newspapers were of the greatest political importance. At the same time a large number of pamphlets helped to strengthen the peo ple's will to continue the struggle and to form public opinion on future developments.

Book Mathematics and the Divine

Download or read book Mathematics and the Divine written by Teun Koetsier and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-12-09 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics and the Divine seem to correspond to diametrically opposed tendencies of the human mind. Does the mathematician not seek what is precisely defined, and do the objects intended by the mystic and the theologian not lie beyond definition? Is mathematics not Man's search for a measure, and isn't the Divine that which is immeasurable ?The present book shows that the domains of mathematics and the Divine, which may seem so radically separated, have throughout history and across cultures, proved to be intimately related. Religious activities such as the building of temples, the telling of ritual stories or the drawing of enigmatic figures all display distinct mathematical features. Major philosophical systems dealing with the Absolute and theological speculations focussing on our knowledge of the Ultimate have been based on or inspired by mathematics. A series of chapters by an international team of experts highlighting key figures, schools and trains of thought is presented here. Chinese number mysticism, the views of Pythagoras and Plato and their followers, Nicholas of Cusa's theological geometry, Spinozism and intuitionism as a philosophy of mathematics are treated side by side among many other themes in an attempt at creating a global view on the relation of mathematics and Man's quest for the Absolute in the course of history.·Mathematics and man's quest for the Absolute·A selective history highlighting key figures, schools and trains of thought ·An international team of historians presenting specific new findings as well as general overviews·Confronting and uniting otherwise compartmentalized information

Book International Publishing in the Netherlands 1933 1945

Download or read book International Publishing in the Netherlands 1933 1945 written by Hendrik Edelman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International publishing in the Netherlands had a glorious tradition in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A remarkable revival took place after 1933, when several Dutch publishers began to issue books written by exiles of the Nazi regime in the German language. The decline of German scholarly and scientific publishing during the same time inspired a number of other Dutch publishers to expand their programs or start new ones. As the English language became more prominent internationally, enterprising Dutch publishers began to explore these markets as well. After the Germans invaded the Netherlands, a number of printers began to produce finely printed books and pamphlets in many languages clandestinely, as an act of defiance or to raise money for underground causes. This book documents these trends and events in the form of a series of bio-bibliographical portraits of the major participating publishers.

Book The Hellenizing Muse

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, the history of Ancient Greek literature ends with Antiquity: after the fall of Rome, the literary works in ancient Greek generally belong to the domain of the Byzantine Empire. However, after the Byzantine refugees restored the knowledge of Ancient Greek in the west during the early humanistic period (15th century), Italian scholars (and later their French, German, Spanish colleagues) started to use Greek, a purely literary language that no one spoke, for their own texts and poems. This habit persisted with various ups and downs throughout the centuries, according to the development of Greek studies in each country. The aim of this anthology - the first one of this kind - is to give a selective overview of this kind of humanistic poetry in Ancient Greek, embracing all major regions of Europe and trying to concentrate on remarkable pieces of important poets. The ultimate goal of the book is to shed light on an important and so far mostly neglected aspect of the European heritage.

Book Dutch Interbellum Canons and World Literature A Roland Holst M Nijhoff J Slauerhoff

Download or read book Dutch Interbellum Canons and World Literature A Roland Holst M Nijhoff J Slauerhoff written by Theo D’haen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text takes a wholly new look at a major early twentieth-century Dutch poet and novelist from the perspective of world literature, situating his work in both a national and a world literary context as measured against contemporaries and near-contemporaries such as Conrad, Pound, Brecht, Segalen, and Malraux. Exemplifying how an author from a “minor” literature may be a “major” world author, this book considers the debates within World Literature regarding the classification of literatures as ‘major’ and ‘minor’, canon formation within Dutch literature, Slauerhoff's position in the Dutch tradition as well as well as his contribution to world literature, particularly focusing on his East Asian poems, his East Asian novels and stories and his poetry and prose set in Latin America. This book is a key read for scholars and students of comparative literature, world literature, European literature, and Dutch literature. Lucid in style, innovative in approach, surprisingly fresh qua topic, this book opens new horizons for literary studies.
