Book American Nightmares

Download or read book American Nightmares written by Dale Bailey and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Edgar Allan Poe set down the tale of the accursed House of Usher in 1839, he also laid the foundation for a literary tradition that has assumed a lasting role in American culture. “The House of Usher” and its literary progeny have not lacked for tenants in the century and a half since: writers from Nathaniel Hawthorne to Stephen King have taken rooms in the haunted houses of American fiction. Dale Bailey traces the haunted house tale from its origins in English gothic fiction to the paperback potboilers of the present, highlighting the unique significance of the house in the domestic, economic, and social ideologies of our nation. The author concludes that the haunted house has become a powerful and profoundly subversive symbol of everything that has gone nightmarishly awry in the American Dream.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive interpretation of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra--an important and difficult text and the only book Nietzsche ever wrote with characters, events, setting, and a plot. Laurence Lampert's chapter-by-chapter commentary on Nietzsche's magnum opus clarifies not only Zarathustra's narrative structure but also the development of Nietzsche's thinking as a whole. "An impressive piece of scholarship. Insofar as it solves the riddle of Zarathustra in an unprecedented fashion, this study serves as an invaluable resource for all serious students of Nietzsche's philosophy. Lampert's persuasive and thorough interpretation is bound to spark a revival of interest in Zarathustra and raise the standards of Nietzsche scholarship in general."--Daniel W. Conway, Review of Metaphysics "A book of scholarship, filled with passion and concern for its text."--Tracy B. Strong, Review of Politics "This is the first genuine textual commentary on Zarathustra in English, and therewith a genuine reader's guide. It makes a significant and original contribution to its field."--Werner J. Dannhauser, Cornell University "This is a very valuable and carefully wrought study of a very complex and subtle poetic-philosophical work that provides access to Nietzsche's style of presenting his thought, as well as to his passionately affirmed values. Lampert's commentary and analysis of Zarathustra is so thorough and detailed. . . that it is the most useful English-language companion to Nietzsche's 'edifying' and intriguing work."--Choice Selected as one of Choice's outstanding academic books for 1988

Book City of Nightmares

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gotham meets Strange the Dreamer in this thrilling young adult fantasy about a cowardly girl who finds herself at the center of a criminal syndicate conspiracy, in a city where crooked politicians and sinister cults reign and dreaming means waking up as your worst nightmare. Ever since her sister became a man-eating spider and slaughtered her way through town, nineteen-year-old Ness has been terrified—terrified of some other Nightmare murdering her, and terrified of ending up like her sister. Because in Newham, the city that never sleeps, dreaming means waking up as your worst fear. Whether that means becoming a Nightmare that’s monstrous only in appearance, to transforming into a twisted, unrecognizable creature that terrorizes the city, no one is safe. Ness will do anything to avoid becoming another victim, even if that means lying low among the Friends of the Restful Soul, a questionable organization that may or may not be a cult. But being a member of maybe-cult has a price. In order to prove herself, Ness cons her way into what’s supposed to be a simple job for the organization—only for it to blow up in her face. Literally. Tangled up in the aftermath of an explosive assassination, now Ness and the only other survivor—a Nightmare boy who Ness suspects is planning to eat her—must find their way back to Newham and uncover the sinister truth behind the attack, even as the horrors of her past loom ominously near.

Book Reluctant Prophets and Clueless Disciples

Download or read book Reluctant Prophets and Clueless Disciples written by Bob Darden and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A college-level introduction that invites students into biblical studies through creative, humorous re-telling of the basic biblical narratives. The Bible is foreign territory for students encountering it in introductory classes. Even those who have spent many years in church have rarely read much of it. To most of us it looks like a big collection of rules, lists, and theological arguments. But in reality, most of the Bible is made up of stories. Sometimes they re inspiring, sometimes they re funny, sometimes they re weird, but they re never dull. The best way to get into the Bible, says Robert Darden, is to get to know its stories. In this new approach to introducing the Bible to students, Darden covers the major biblical stories and characters, retelling them in such a way as to bring out their original humor and pathos, and inviting the student to encounter them more fully by moving into the text itself.

Book Death of the Disciples Part Three of the Arlanian Trilogy

Download or read book Death of the Disciples Part Three of the Arlanian Trilogy written by Mark O'Doherty and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-05-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctor Zhivago / До́ктор Жива́го - An Epic Novel This is a epic tale about the effects of the Russian Revolution and its aftermath on a bourgeois family. The novel is named after its protagonist, Yuri Zhivago, a physician and poet, and takes place between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and World War II. Dr. Yury Zhivago, Pasternak's alter ego, is a poet, philosopher, and physician whose life is disrupted by the war and by his love for Lara, the wife of a revolutionary. His artistic nature makes him vulnerable to the brutality and harshness of the Bolsheviks. The poems he writes constitute some of the most beautiful writing featured in the novel - which I can confirm, having read the book some 20 years ago: ) The story of 'Doctor Zhivago' is about a complex psychological and detailed panorama of people; their feelings, relationships and companionship spanning several decades. In fact, the two main protagonists in the story - Lara and Yuri Zhivago - are quite unpolitical, and very gentle souls, who would not hurt a fly. In a time where Russian society is marked by great political turmoil, war and oppression, Lara and Yuri Zhivago stand out in this story; both having a great gift for healing people. Zhivago is a skilled physician and Lara a skilled nurse (a great Angel of Healing) - which Russia needed desperately during those times, due to the tremendous suffering. So the two of them make a great team; both of them being contributing greatly to healing Mother Russia: ) Indeed, Russia still needs a lot of healing today. In my opinion, the most tragic failing of today's Russia is that even though Russia is a highly intellectualized society, Russia has regressed into the dark cave of a military dictatorship - where academics, lawyers and opposition leaders are persecuted. This must change - so that the People of Russia can restore Peace and Friendship with their Brothers and Sisters in Ukraine; and also for the sake of future generations in Russia - so that academics, lawyers and opposition leaders can speak their mind, and be allowed to participate in shaping Russia's future. We encourage the People of Russia to implement a peaceful governmental change by forming a new Russian Government - so that Peace and Human Rights can be restored. Love and Light / Президент Российской Федерации / POTUS / UNITED NATIONS / EU / AU / Mark: ) PS: I also would be quite happy to drink a Водка together with my dear friend Vladimir Putin, once he has resigned: )

Book Millennial Dreams and Apocalyptic Nightmares

Download or read book Millennial Dreams and Apocalyptic Nightmares written by Angela M. Lahr and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Religious Right came to prominence in the early 1980s, but it was born during the early Cold War. Evangelical leaders like Billy Graham, driven by a fierce opposition to communism, led evangelicals out of the political wilderness they'd inhabited since the Scopes trial and into a much more active engagement with the important issues of the day. How did the conservative evangelical culture move into the political mainstream? Angela Lahr seeks to answer this important question. She shows how evangelicals, who had felt marginalized by American culture, drew upon their eschatological belief in the Second Coming of Christ and a subsequent glorious millennium to find common cause with more mainstream Americans who also feared a a 'soon-coming end,' albeit from nuclear war. In the early postwar climate of nuclear fear and anticommunism, the apocalyptic eschatology of premillennial dispensationalism embraced by many evangelicals meshed very well with the "secular apocalyptic" mood of a society equally terrified of the Bomb and of communism. She argues that the development of the bomb, the creation of the state of Israel, and the Cuban Missile Crisis combined with evangelical end-times theology to shape conservative evangelical political identity and to influence secular views. Millennial beliefs influenced evangelical interpretation of these events, repeatedly energized evangelical efforts, and helped evangelicals view themselves and be viewed by others as a vital and legitimate segment of American culture, even when it raised its voice in sharp criticism of aspects of that culture. Conservative Protestants were able to take advantage of this situation to carve out a new space for their subculture within the national arena. The greater legitimacy that evangelicals gained in the early Cold War provided the foundation of a power-base in the national political culture that the religious right would draw on in the late seventies and early eighties. The result, she demonstrates, was the alliance of religious and political conservatives that holds power today.

Book God Chooses People Like You

Download or read book God Chooses People Like You written by Beverly Lipford Carroll and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heroes of the Bible werent any more gifted or powerful than you are. They were flawed, ordinary people living ordinary lives and doing ordinary things. Their struggles and temptations were no different from ours. But they allowed their ordinary lives to be interrupted by God, who is anything but ordinary. They chose to obey God when they did not necessarily see a happy ending. And when they did, what we see as a remarkable hero in the Bible is just an ordinary person reflecting the glory of God. Our capabilities are far less influential than the choices we make, and our choices become the stories of our lives. We can continue to serve the pain of our past and be held captive by what we wish we could change, or we can let our belief in the power of God overshadow the size of our enemy and the depth of our weakness. God doesnt need heroes. He wants you. His power and glory are most evident in your weakness. Your past is never too complicated or too far gone for God to redeem into something beautifulresurrection is His specialty.

Book The Disciples of Goedric

Download or read book The Disciples of Goedric written by Jeffrey Jude and published by Jeffrey Jude. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Disciples of Goedric A Trilogy I. Gay Gene Rising II. Guardians of the Blood III. SoulFire and Tears The Sons and Daughters of Goedric had fallen. For more than 2,700 years their once noble creed drifted, trapped in time like a ripple across an endless sea with no hope of shore. All that remained were broken memories and a fragile hope that had been cast into the winds of time by Judea-the_just and Ruth the Raven-Haired. In the not so distant future, young Etan flees his Chicago apartment, narrowly escaping IFC henchmen who will stop at nothing to get him back under their control. Burdened by relentless fits and horrific visions, his only hope rests with a rag-tag group of friends, led by two tough, old-guard lesbians who never thought they’d live long enough to witness the horrors of a second gay plague. Sue DeGault and Sue Keller pray for strength as they prepare to battle fate and the IFC, a corporate goliath controlled by a ancient and powerful family that could trace its roots to the days of King Yoshiyahu... a family that had been raging a war against homosexuals for thousands of years. Far away in the remote mountains of Mexico, a great grey-wolf raises ts muzzle and curled back his lips to taste the air. The scent of blood stings his palette, and he howls into ancient winds as they paint the mists with death. The winds were born on the battlefield, in a time long past. They saw the Great Purge of King Yoshiyahu. They witnessed the atrocities that were committed in the name of Yahweh, and they moaned in anguish as the blood of the Disciples of Goedric muddied the ground. His great howl echoed through the mountaintops, heralding the second dawn of Man's hope, and the very universe braced itself for the impossible... and the Eternal Void trembled in fear.
