She wants to return a potentially deadly artifact to its mythical place of origin in a lost valley located somewhere in the jungles of Africa. Their noble and chivalrous decision takes them on a perilous quest into a weird and dangerous world of giant creatures, carnivorous plants, savage cannibals, quicksand, and earthquakes. And if that isn't enough, for good measure, there's a psychotic killer on the loose. Despite the pair's bumbling, the fun-loving twits somehow manage to achieve success. And there's even some romance thrown into the mix. All in a day's work for these former rockers who aren't quite ready yet for rocking chairs! Barry Brady (Brady Styles) was born in Sydney, Australia, and trained as a graphic artist. He worked for many years on The Sydney Morning Herald, and then for a smaller publishing company, Modern Magazines. He formed his own art company, designing a variety of publications for clients, including Movie Magazine for The Greater Union Organization, the largest distributor of films in Australia. Now semi-retired, besides writing, he performs in a rock band. Publisher's website: http: //sbprabooks.com/BradyStyles

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just a few hours before she is murdered, a foreign stranger claims she is a close relative of investigative filmmaker Maggie MacGowen. It is a truism that “it’s a wise child who knows its father.” The same can apply to a mother, since we must believe and take for granted as true what our family tells us about our own early years. But what if you “remember” places you’ve never been, speak a language you’ve never been taught? What if your nearest and dearest are all involved in a conspiracy to cover up your true origins? In The Paramour’s Daughter, Maggie MacGowen is thrown into this parallel universe, trying to remember “the ghosts of comfort, fear, or love” from her earliest years. She must question everything she’s ever known about herself and her life-and deal with a large cast of previously unknown blood relatives, some of whom may not have affectionate feelings for the little girl who vanished so long ago. Especially when large sums of euros are involved.... “Edgar-winner Hornsby's enthralling seventh Maggie MacGowen mystery takes the documentary filmmaker to France. . . . Readers will almost be able to taste the food and drink the author so vividly describes.” -Publishers Weekly (7/19/10)

Book excerpt: The premise-a misfit nun who comes to the aid of a needy family-is compelling and. The script is highly imaginative-a floating nun, a Saint in the form of a dog and perverted lingerie buyers-all of this makes for a really original story and takes the audience somewhere it hasn't gone before. There is some good humor in this script. Some of the best humor comes from the Halcyon Catalog Center, such as this interaction between Dan and his boss, Natalie, [Natalie] "Why, those are black magazines? Why are you only selling black magazines? You're not talking black to those people, are you?" [Dan] "I dunno. Sometimes I say, Yo. Is that black, Natalie?" Maybe the most charming aspect of this story though, is its heart. One feels the family really cares for one another, despite their failings and shortcomings. -Gordy Hoffman, BlueCat Screenplay Competition Sister Simplicity, a recalcitrant and menopausal nun wakes up one morning, and is visited by a neurotic Archangel, St. Raphael, (in the form of a dog) who warns her that "she is on a short leash," for she needs to amend her worldly life by Christmas. Misinterpreting her Mother Superior's intentions she believes she is the prize in the convent's raffle, and shows up at the dysfunctional Murdoch family's home (holder of the winning ticket) exclaiming she is first prize. The "winners", Rachel and Dan Murdoch are perplexed at receiving a "mail order" nun whom they view as just another mouth to feed. Sister's task is enormous, for she must straighten out, Jason, a preteen who is up to his elbows in mischief; reel in the rambunctious daughter, Sherry, who has started to experiment precariously with "boys". But her heavy cross lies ahead, rescuing; Dan and Rachel, the parents who are in trouble when Dan uncovers a gang of inept bank thieves' money which they lost during the course of a failed robbery.

Book Dickens and the Dream of Cinema

Download or read book Dickens and the Dream of Cinema written by Grahame Smith and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-08 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking his cue from Walter Benjamin's concept of each epoch dreaming the epoch that is to follow, Grahame Smith argues that Dickens' novels can be regarded as proto-filmic in the detail of their language as well as their larger formal structures. This possibility arises from Dickens' creative engagement with the city as metropolis, as it emerges in the London of the 1830s, plus his immersion in the visual entertainments of his day, such as the panorama, as well as technological advances such as the railway which anticipates cinema in some of its major features. The book offers a new way of reading Dickens, through the perspective of a form which he knew nothing of, while simultaneously suggesting an account of his part in the manifold forces that led to the appearance of film towards the end of the 19th century.
