  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 51 pages

Download or read book Night Trading written by Marie-Eve Lachance and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper demonstrates that overnight returns are subject to highly persistent biases and examines the profitability of overnight-only investments in that context. Overnight returns tend to exceed their intraday counterparts, and the paper first reconciles these patterns by introducing a model that factors in recurring biases. This model identifies one fifth of stocks as having positive and statistically significant overnight biases. Investing overnight in these stocks in the next year yields twice the market's return for a third of the market beta. Results have also implications for daytime investors as these stocks average negative returns intraday. Implementation costs and issues are discussed.

Book Price Movements Information and Liquidity in the Night Trading Market

Download or read book Price Movements Information and Liquidity in the Night Trading Market written by Antoine Giannetti and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Night trading provides an ideal laboratory to assess the behavior of stock markets when institutional liquidity providers are less active. The evidence indicates that extreme positive (winner) and negative (loser) stock price movements during night sessions are followed by reversals the next day. The reversals are more pronounced following extreme stock price movements that are associated with less trading volume and lower liquidity. Within-the-night sample reversals are less pronounced for stocks of companies issuing earnings announcements.

Book Night Trading with Futures in China

Download or read book Night Trading with Futures in China written by Tony Klein and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use high-frequency data to examine the effects of introducing an additional night trading session of four hours at the Shanghai Futures Exchange for Copper and Aluminum futures in December 2013. This additional trading session is shown to cause a structural break in the intraday behavior of prices. For Copper, the realized volatility of the regular session is endogenously determined while the night session is strongly driven by the immediately preceding realized volatility of the LME. In contrast, there is only little evidence for a directional spillover from the LME to SHFE for Aluminum futures. We find no indications that the SHFE is pulling volume from LME with the additional trading at night. Last, the now existing break between the day-time session and the night trading session is found to have significant informational content for Copper and Aluminum volatility and needs to be treated separately when extracting jump components from realized volatility.

Book Lovers by Night Strangers by Day An Investigation of Simple Overnight Trading Strategies

Download or read book Lovers by Night Strangers by Day An Investigation of Simple Overnight Trading Strategies written by Chrilly Donninger and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This working paper investigates the claim of several publications that most of the gains of stocks and stock-indexes are realized overnight. Additionally it is stated there is less volatility overnight than intraday. One gets with less risk more fun. But the data are in both studies outdated. This working-paper investigates if the effect still exists and if one can exploit it with a realistic trading strategy. The effect is still there, but less pronounced than stated in the older literature. The study reveals an interesting stylized fact. Overnight returns are positive correlated with market turmoil. Without trading costs one could implement a very simple and attractive trading strategy. Under realistic assumptions trading the S&P-500 E-mini futures is clearly worse than buy&hold of the ETF SPY. The NASDAQ-100 E-mini are a more promising choice.

Book Intranight Trading Behaviour

Download or read book Intranight Trading Behaviour written by Alex Frino and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines 'intranight' patterns in quoted bid-ask spreads, price volatility and trading volume. Using data for the overnight market of the Sydney Futures Exchange, an elevation in both price volatility and trading volume at the open and close of overnight trading sessions is documented, consistent with prior research examining daytime markets. In contrast to existing theory and prior research, quoted bid-ask spreads are found to widen throughout night-time trading sessions. Bid-ask spreads, price volatility and trading volume also appear to increase at approximately 00:30. Apart from the behaviour of quoted bid-ask spreads, a number of tests are carried out documenting that these patterns are consistent with the effects of contagion from overseas markets, overseas information releases, and strategic trading by informed and uninformed traders.

Book Return Differences between Trading and Non Trading Hours

Download or read book Return Differences between Trading and Non Trading Hours written by Michael J. Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use transaction-level data and decompose the US equity premium into day (open to close) and night (close to open) returns. We document the striking result that the US equity premium over the last decade is solely due to overnight returns; the returns during the night are strongly positive, and returns during the day are close to zero and sometimes negative. This day and night effect holds for individual stocks, equity indexes, and futures contracts on equity indexes and is robust across the NYSE and Nasdaq exchanges. Night returns are consistently higher than day returns across days of the week, days of the month, and months of the year. The effect is driven in part by high opening prices which subsequently decline in the first hour of trading.
