Download or read book A Thousand Thoughts in Flight written by Maria Gabriela Llansol and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable collection of diary entries from cross-genre Portuguese author Maria Gabriela Llansol, which span dozens of diaries and 33 years. "She dedicated herself to this work regularly, at the same time, in the same place, and in almost the same position…” (The Book of Communities). Over the course of her life, Maria Gabriela Llansol wrote many thousands of pages. She left behind 70 diaries in all, which began in November 1974 and continued until 2007. Three of them were published during her lifetime. Diary I begins the day she finishes The Book of Communities and ends the day she finishes The Remaining Life, in 1977. Diary II picks up two years later, when she is finishing In the House of July and August and beginning the second trilogy. It follows her through the second trilogy and captures her first ideas for the Lisbonleipzig duology; it is here where Bach and Pessoa begin their encounter, in 1982. Diary III is less a diary than a mourning of the death of her friend, the Portuguese writer Virgílio Ferreira, one of the only contemporary writers with whom she felt any affinity, a mapping of their relationship and a conversation between them.
Download or read book Overthinking A Thousand Thoughts Per Second written by Dhiraj Wadhwa and published by Dhiraj Wadhwa. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book mentions my complete journey of how I overcame the control that my thoughts had on me and my life. It simply tells the story of how and why I started overthinking, and what helped me in getting back to the normal train of thoughts. When you're an overthinker, the number of things to think about can run out fairly quickly. However your thoughts still do not stop.. And so you start over thinking about every single aspect of life, even those that didn't matter to you before, and they still don't, its just you need something to think about. And this need of excessive and redundant thinking is exactly what I overcame, and pulled myself out of the rut of thoughts. The freedom that I have now, is indescribable and is worth being grateful for every single moment of my life. The freedom that I have now, is what I want to help you achieve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A story threaded with shimmering vibrance and beauty, A Thousand Nights will weave its spell over readers' hearts and leave them captivated long after the final tale has been told." -- Alexandra Bracken, New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Minds series A dazzling retelling of Arabian Nights, A THOUSAND NIGHTS is a tale of family, love and power that would not feel out of place if Scheherazade herself were telling it. And maybe she is... Lo-Melkhiin killed three hundred girls before he came to her village, looking for a wife. When she sees the dust cloud on the horizon, she knows he has arrived. She knows he will want the loveliest girl: her sister. She vows she will not let her be next. And so she is taken in her sister's place. Night after night, Lo-Melkhiin comes to her and listens to the stories she tells, and day after day she is awoken by the sunrise. Exploring the palace, she begins to unlock years of fear that have tormented and silenced a kingdom. Lo-Melkhiin was not always a cruel ruler. Something went wrong. Far away, back in their village, her sister is mourning. Through her pain, she calls upon the desert winds, conjuring a subtle unseen magic, and something besides death stirs the air. Then at the palace, the words she speaks to Lo-Melkhiin every night are given a strange life of their own. Little things, at first: a dress from home, a vision of her sister. With each tale she spins, her power grows. Soon she dreams of bigger, more terrible magic: power enough to save a king, if she can put an end to the rule of a monster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most stories start with the words In the beginning, something happened a long time ago. There was a great country, and if we could turn back the clock and watch the years, months, and days go idly by, we could make time do our bidding. We could start with the Assyrians, Babylonians, Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra. Maybe we will find out why the Sphinx was built and who is entombed within it. There are a number of other dynasties that were created by time, and those who rose to power and then by the magic of time were only names written in some history book that some researcher may read on some sunny afternoon in a classroom, in a library or maybe archived in a distant land, where one or many are doing research into the rise and fall of those who wanted to rule over the dreams of others and perhaps we might end up with. Who knows, with more than just a thought. With great power comes great responsibility and challenges for the future. During that time of the building of a nation, there are many problems externally and internally. That nation, endowed by its victories over tyranny and regimes that rule with fear and intimidation, can only survive if those who fought for the freedoms somehow gave them up to the few who want power all for themselves. And from the Bible, Greater hath no man than those who would give their lives for their fellow man. Greater love for liberty and the pursuit of what makes the populous happy. Sometimes the leaders of the populous wants what somebody else has or they want to force upon them, their beliefs (Manifestos). I read something that I would like to quote: Better to be poor with integrity than rich and crooked in ones ways, desire without knowledge is not good and whoever acts hastily blunders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1999. The interaction between religion and medicine is universal throughout recorded history. They meet at the great turning points of life: at birth, at moments of acute suffering and at death. Not only are priest and doctor often needed at the same time and place, the two roles have also been combined in ancient and modem societies. This volume looks at whether healers and religions have worked in harmony or been in conflict, as well as their frequent and substantive interaction. An International Workshop lies behind this volume and one of the distinctive features of this project is that it brought together scholars of religion, historians of medicine, anthropologists and medical practitioners.
Download or read book Night Thoughts written by Wallace Shawn and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “acerbic yet compassionate” meditation on humanity by the acclaimed actor and playwright offers “curiosity, thoughtfulness, sharp logic, deep emotion” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Beloved actor and Obie Award–winning playwright Wallace Shawn has been an incisive commentator on civilization and its discontents for decades. Now, having recently passed the age of seventy and watched Donald Trump claim the presidency, he offers a late-stage critique of his species, which he sees as being divided between the lucky and the unlucky. In Night Thoughts, Shawn takes the lucky—himself included—to task for their complacency while offering fascinating reflections on “civilization, morality, Beethoven, 11th-century Japanese court poetry, and his hopes for a better world, among other topics” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is dedicated to the Wei Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties (220–589 AD), which is generally regarded as one of the most fascinating phases in Chinese history. The collection opens new theoretical and methodological pathways in sinological studies, bringing to the forefront a new idea of intercultural encounters based upon a culture of recognition. It highlights the significance of transition in the making of Chinese culture and history, revises prevailing historical approaches in the study and research of China and develops and enhances existing theories or methodologies in this specific area of research. The wide diversity of contributions to the present volume reflects the multifaceted potential for creativity and renewal of this period. The focus is upon the interaction of ideas, researches and perspectives concerning a broad scope of relevant and significant issues in contemporary sinology. In order to understand this diversity, a wide range of cultural, theoretical and historical aspects are considered. The book reveals a new image of the period, thereby undermining the absolute authority and putative objectivity of common historical sources and interpretations. It shows that this was a period rich with political, economic, cultural and theoretical achievements that would prove decisive for the future development of Chinese culture and society.
