Book Media and Communication in Nigeria

Download or read book Media and Communication in Nigeria written by Bruce Mutsvairo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication is changing rapidly around the world, particularly in Africa, where citizens are embracing digital technologies not only to improve not only interpersonal communication but also the state of their financial well-being. This book investigates these transformations in Nigeria’s booming communication industry. The book traces communications in Nigeria back to pre-colonial indigenous communications, through the development of telecommunication, broadcasting networks, the press, the Nigerian film industry (‘Nollywood’) and on to the digital era. At a time when Western voices still dominate the academic literature on communication in Africa, this book is noteworthy in drawing almost exclusively on the expertise of Nigerian-based authors, critiquing the discipline from their own lens and providing an important contribution to the decolonisation of communication studies. The authors provide a holistic analysis of the sector, encompassing print journalism, broadcast journalism, public relations, advertising, film, development communication, organisational communication and strategic communication. Analysis of the role of digital technologies is woven throughout the book, concluding with a final section theorising the future of communication studies in Nigeria in the light of the digital media revolution. Robust in its theoretical and methodological underpinnings, this book will be an important reference for researchers of media and communication studies, and those working on Africa specifically.

Book excerpt: Governance in Nigeria is like Beauty. Beauty, they say, is in the eyes of the beholder; more or less agreeing to the cliché ''different folks, different people. What''s exciting to one person may be a bore or an outright anathema to another. What a world, a wonderful world, some might say! The manner of governance of the Nigerian nation has elicited so much passion that her citizens are split mainly into two vociferous categories - hailers and wailers; while the third, perhaps fatigued from the effects of hailing today and wailing the next day has assumed Siddon look'' attitude. There has always been much to hail, or wail about on Nigeria since 1900. This became apparent when the British colonialist''s hunger was manifested in the grand plans to add the wealth of the peoples of the River Niger area of West Africa and their land. The expansionist, Great Britain cared solely for her interest without any iota of concern for those peoples'' interest. Commentaries bordering on hailing and wailing were attracted because the colonialists were selfish and spared no thought on the impending difficulties and dangers ahead of the drastically different peoples they were going to unite! Gaining Independence in 1960 and Republican status in 1963 has added more reasons for commentaries - hailing and wailing, on Nigeria. The politicians'' inability to forge on as a united country caused unease which developed into disturbances in many cities of the country, especially in the Western Region. The uprising spread like a wild forest fire in the country''s Western Region. The disturbances turned into widespread burning and destruction of moveable and fixed properties, described as "Operation Wet E''. The Federal government responded by declaring a state of emergency in the Western Region to stem the tide. Leading political personalities from a political party were arraigned and jailed for treason in 1964 The first coup d''etat was registered in January 1966, quickly followed by another in July 1967. The country has endured several others, from that of 1975 that ushered in the Generals Murtala Mohammed/Olusegun Obasanjo that handed over to the government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari. Alhaji Shehu Shagari''s civilian government in 1979 was toppled by the military coup d''etat of 1983 that brought General Muhammed Buhari/Tunde Idiagbon, which was toppled by the General Ibrahim B. Babangida/Aikhomu government in 1985. Since Chief Olusegun Obasanjo''s second coming in 1999 to General Mohammed Buhari''s 2015, governance in Nigeria has been a harrowing experience for ordinary Nigerians. It has resulted in only people in government and friends benefiting and hailing nearly every move of the government, while those out of government and many others have become wailers! Nigerians, home and abroad have been divided into hailers and wailers not to talk about the separatists'' movements. Both hailers and wailers belong in the country and are supposed to be compatriots. They are, therefore critical stakeholders in this sense. Is it not known to them that those who constantly criticize each other are unlikely to be friends? However, do both have noble and altruistic motives and mean well for the country? Are they both patriots? If not, which group of the two is patriotic? In this case, they are both patriotic, which group is more, and shouldn''t they pool resources together? It''s time both compatriots should be civil, logical, persuasive, and stop being abrasive, abusive, insultingly combative in their approach. It''s time, like Argos, who looked past the specks of dirt and noise and recognized Odyssey when all others failed, all Nigerian compatriots must hasten past virulent animosity and jointly focus on the golden goal. A serious patriotic search for answers and solutions to fix Nigeria to reaching El Dorado without further delay is the concern and focus of this book, NIGERIA AT CROSSROADS As Compatriots Hail and Wail.
