Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976, this book was the first comprehensive analysis in English of the post-independence developments in the West African Republic of Guinea. It is a scholarly analysis of the different aspects of life in the country: political, economic and social. Among other things, the significance and consequences of the 1958 historic vote for independence are carefully examined: the role of President Touré, the country's first and only Head of State, is assessed; the role of one of Africa's earliest single mass parties, the Democratic Party of Guinea is also discussed, and the abortive invasion of November 1970 is situated in its correct historical perspective. This carefully researched book was based on observation and interviews, and on published and unpublished government and party documents, most of which were only available inside Guinea.

Book The Paradox of Nation Building in Nigeria Nigeria s Strife and Strivings up to 2016

Download or read book The Paradox of Nation Building in Nigeria Nigeria s Strife and Strivings up to 2016 written by Afeez Tope Raji and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject History - Africa, grade: 4.0, , course: History, language: English, abstract: This text deals with the historical intrigues, socio-economic cleavages, crime and public safety and other aspects of the nation-building of the country of Nigeria. The question of Nigeria's failed attempt at nation-building is that of a full moon; clear enough even for a hypocritical sight. A critical examination of Nigeria over five decades of independence, suggests that Nigeria is still comfortably seated in the woods. Even as we move into the 21st Century, in this age of globalization, it seems to be gravitating around a peripheral approach to nation building. With successive government and its people gracefully "enjoying" a utopian construct of the Nigerian "Great Nation", corruption, social disturbances and insecurity, unemployment and underemployment, endemic intergroup conflict, health hazard, constitutional challenge, weak educational system and structures, "gender gap", civic pride and fake living, malfunctioned transportation, political deceit, secessionist threat, pawn status and so forth continues to outplay nation building attempts. There is optimism however, of a realistic construct of this ideal.

Book The Price for Wealth

Download or read book The Price for Wealth written by CHARLES AKUJIEZE and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-03-19 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wait a minute! Do you really want to be poor for the rest of your life? If “yes”, then this book is not for you. However, if your answer is “no”, I’m happy to inform you that the principles of success and wealth in this book will lead you to access wealth the right way. Experience has shown that among the few winners in life are fewer numbers of those who command success – winning “within” and “without”. The rest of them command one-sided or one-legged winning – either winning “within” or “without”. Some win in spiritual matters at the expense of economic, biological, emotional, health and other important aspects of life because they have not been able to pay the full price for creating, maintaining and sustaining real and complete wealth. True and complete wealth is made up of three essential components which are: •Health: this consists of spiritual, emotional, physical and mental. •Cash-flow and riches: this includes savings, investments and your earnings or revenue. •Power: inclusive of spiritual and temporal influence. Most importantly, we must appreciate three important truths – (a) there is a wealthy place; (b) there are paths that lead to the wealthy place; (c) discovering the paths and embarking on the journey guarantees that you’ll get to the wealthy place. There are three bus stops (or stations) to the wealthy place – (a) financial intelligence; (b) financial planning; (c) financial discipline. Any other means employed to attempt to circumvent these eternal principles through “short-cut” lead to gate-crashing which would ultimately lead to crash-landing. Unknown to many, using “short-cuts” most times leads to the longest path in the journey of life.

Book Diplomacy and Nation Building in Africa

Download or read book Diplomacy and Nation Building in Africa written by Mélanie Torrent and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cameroon stands as a remarkable example of nation-building in the aftermath of European domination. Split between the French and British empires after World War I, it experienced a unique drive for self-determination at the turn of the 1960s, culminating in both independence from European power and the re-unification of two of its divided territories. This book investigates the influence of foreign policy on nation-building in West Africa in the context of both the Cold War and European integration. Shedding fresh light on the challenges of bridging the political, economic and linguistic divide that France and Britain had left, Melanie Torrent explores the evolution of a nation, charting both Cameroon's importance in Franco-British relations and Cameroon's use of bilateral and multilateral diplomacy in asserting its independence. This work should be essential reading for students of African studies, International Relations and the post-colonial world.

Book National Security Democracy Good Governance in Post Military Rule Nigeria Volume One

Download or read book National Security Democracy Good Governance in Post Military Rule Nigeria Volume One written by Dr. Dan Mou and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-12-30 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that the security, economic, political, and social problems challenging national security, democracy, and good governance currently in Nigeria would get better or worse, depending on what happens to the seventy-one percent (71%) of Nigeria’s population still living below poverty line. This is in spite of the billions of petrodollars that Nigeria garnered as revenue over the past few decades. It reveals that one does not need to be a “political prophet” to predict that if these challenges are not successfully addressed through good governance and inclusive growth, this country will witness the worst civil disobedience, violence, revolts, militancy, breakdown of law and order, more kidnappings, and more of the citizens trying to “check out” of the country to other parts of the world in future. It concludes, however, that under such intense pressures, the Government of Nigeria, even if it is simply for its self-preservation, will be forced by the objective conditions to move against the interests of the dominant groups and classes in Nigeria. These are the ones who have, for long, captured and hijacked state power and the resources of the country for their exclusive use.

Book Problems and Prospects of Sustaining Democracy in Nigeria

Download or read book Problems and Prospects of Sustaining Democracy in Nigeria written by Bamidele A. Ojo and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few years have been very traumatic ones for many Nigerians. With the exception of those in power or close to the seat of power, the changes of 1998 were a welcome relief given the tyranny and repression that the country had suffered under General Abacha. With many people in prison and more in exile, the death of Abacha was received with a sigh of relief. Many observers have seen the resilience that has come to signify the strength and potential of this once 'giant of Africa', as well as the destruction and the socio-political and economic decay of the past decades. The Nigerian people have endured the exploitation of their rights due to the lack of democratic leadership, and with this in mind, they have been called to attention to fight for their country.

Book Representative Bureaucracy Meritocracy and Nation Building in Nigeria

Download or read book Representative Bureaucracy Meritocracy and Nation Building in Nigeria written by Bola Dauda and published by Cambria Press. This book was released on 2015-12-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive theoretical and empirical investigation of the practical application of representative bureaucracy in Nigeria. Part I consists of four chapters, beginning with a theoretical and an historical overview of representative bureaucracy and policy making in Nigeria. This includes a discussion of the myths, contradictions, and the resultant dilemmas of administration. It highlights the complexities and intricacies of public policy-making, and examines the concept of representative bureaucracy including its meaning, forms, criticisms, prospects, limitations, and history. It also examines the need for administrative reforms, what reforms have taken place, and the country's search for appropriate bureaucracy for nation building. Part II details the objective and empirical facts regarding the representativeness of bureaucracy in Nigeria and its implications. Unlike past approaches, this book provides solid evidence of what difference representative bureaucracy actually makes on the ground. Using a novel and rigorous methodological approach, the actual impact of the civil service on policy-making is assessed and insights are provided into how a more representative bureaucracy affects policy. The approach is enhanced by the authors' advantage as Nigerian scholars who had both worked in the Nigerian political system as civil servant and university professors. This landmark study will be of value to scholars and students of Nigerian and African political, economic, and social development .
