Why are you still smoking, even though you want to quit? Based on twenty years of research and hands-on work with countless smokers in his clinics at Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Daniel F. Seidman understands that people smoke -- and quit -- for different reasons and what works for one smoker might not work for another. • Are you a Situational Smoker? Monitoring your reactions in different situations is a step toward permanently losing interest in cigarettes. • Are you a Worried-about-Weight Smoker? Properly using treatments like Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) can help you quit and get healthy in all aspects of your life. • Are you an Emotion-Triggered Smoker? Scheduling your smoking breaks and sticking to a rigid "smoking schedule" helps break the link between stressful situations and craving cigarettes. In a comprehensive, 30-day program, Dr. Seidman explains how to retrain your brain, take advantage of all the tools at your disposal, and end the month smoke-free and feeling stronger than ever!

Book Public Health Consequences of E Cigarettes

Download or read book Public Health Consequences of E Cigarettes written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-05-18 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans use e-cigarettes. Despite their popularity, little is known about their health effects. Some suggest that e-cigarettes likely confer lower risk compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, because they do not expose users to toxicants produced through combustion. Proponents of e-cigarette use also tout the potential benefits of e-cigarettes as devices that could help combustible tobacco cigarette smokers to quit and thereby reduce tobacco-related health risks. Others are concerned about the exposure to potentially toxic substances contained in e-cigarette emissions, especially in individuals who have never used tobacco products such as youth and young adults. Given their relatively recent introduction, there has been little time for a scientific body of evidence to develop on the health effects of e-cigarettes. Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes reviews and critically assesses the state of the emerging evidence about e-cigarettes and health. This report makes recommendations for the improvement of this research and highlights gaps that are a priority for future research.

Book Smoke Free in 7 Days A Life Saving Dossier

Download or read book Smoke Free in 7 Days A Life Saving Dossier written by Jesse Montez-Jones and published by Writers Republic LLC. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tobacco industry has a license to kill. It is widely known throughout the medical profession that nicotine--an active ingredient in cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco --is a cancer-causing carcinogen that imposes devastating effects on virtually every human organ it touches. Nicotine is both a sedative and a stimulant. It causes the pancreas to produce less insulin, which prompts an increase in blood sugar or glucose. Nicotine, indirectly, causes the release of dopamine in the pleasure and motivation areas of the brain, producing distortions similar to those that occur when people misuse heroin or cocaine. Why does our government permit the tobacco industry to continue producing these products when they are well aware of the health risks involved? MONEY! The giant tobacco lobby heaps enormous amounts of it on our legislators to secure their favor. Legislators are paid to look the other way as the tobacco industry generates enormous amounts of capital while endangering, and even ending, the lives of addicted American citizens. True! The tobacco industry does have a satanic license to kill. Also, true! Love Circle Inc. has a Godly mission to heal. If you will diligently follow the plan set forth in this publication, both your cigarette-smoking habit and your submissive addiction to deadly nicotine will end in just 7 days. P. S. Love Circle Inc. will introduce a subsequent publication with a plan to end addictions related to cigar and pipe smoking in the near future. Stay tuned.

Book Nicotine

Download or read book Nicotine written by Gregor Hens and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE ECONOMIST By turns philosophical and darkly comic, an ex-smoker’s meditation on the nature and consequences of his nearly lifelong addiction. Written with the passion of an obsessive, Nicotine addresses a lifelong addiction, from the thrill of the first drag to the perennial last last cigarette. Reflecting on his experiences as a smoker from a young age, Gregor Hens investigates the irreversible effects of nicotine on thought and patterns of behavior. He extends the conversation with other smokers to meditations on Mark Twain and Italo Svevo, the nature of habit, and the validity of hypnosis. With comic insight and meticulous precision, Hens deconstructs every facet of dependency, offering a brilliant analysis of the psychopathology of addiction. This is a book about the physical, emotional, and psychological power of nicotine as not only an addictive drug, but also a gateway to memory, a long trail of streetlights in the rearview mirror of a smoker’s life. Cigarettes are sometimes a solace, sometimes a weakness, but always a witness and companion. This is a meditation, an ode, and a eulogy, one that will be passed hand-to-hand between close friends.

Book Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects

Download or read book Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-02-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data suggest that exposure to secondhand smoke can result in heart disease in nonsmoking adults. Recently, progress has been made in reducing involuntary exposure to secondhand smoke through legislation banning smoking in workplaces, restaurants, and other public places. The effect of legislation to ban smoking and its effects on the cardiovascular health of nonsmoking adults, however, remains a question. Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects reviews available scientific literature to assess the relationship between secondhand smoke exposure and acute coronary events. The authors, experts in secondhand smoke exposure and toxicology, clinical cardiology, epidemiology, and statistics, find that there is about a 25 to 30 percent increase in the risk of coronary heart disease from exposure to secondhand smoke. Their findings agree with the 2006 Surgeon General's Report conclusion that there are increased risks of coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality among men and women exposed to secondhand smoke. However, the authors note that the evidence for determining the magnitude of the relationship between chronic secondhand smoke exposure and coronary heart disease is not very strong. Public health professionals will rely upon Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects for its survey of critical epidemiological studies on the effects of smoking bans and evidence of links between secondhand smoke exposure and cardiovascular events, as well as its findings and recommendations.

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.
