Download or read book Willing to Believe written by R. C. Sproul and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of the will in believing the good news of the gospel? Why is there so much controversy over free will throughout church history? R. C. Sproul finds that Christians have often been influenced by pagan views of the human will that deny the effects of Adam's fall. In Willing to Believe, Sproul traces the free-will controversy from its formal beginning in the fifth century, with the writings of Augustine and Pelagius, to the present. Readers will gain understanding into the nuances separating the views of Protestants and Catholics, Calvinists and Arminians, and Reformed and Dispensationalists. This book, like Sproul's Faith Alone, is a major work on an essential evangelical tenet.

Download or read book God Willing written by Ali Riaz and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Bangladesh becoming a Taliban state? The question has become urgent in light of the growing strength of militant groups supposedly aligned with Al Quaida, the landslide victory of the center-right coalition in the general election of October 2001, and the deliberate and planned violence against religious minorities that followed. God Willing explores the explosive issue of Talibanization by analyzing the politics of Islamism in the world's third most populous Muslim country. Ali Riaz helps the reader to understand the emergence of Islamism as a legitimate democratic political in a largely secular state, as opposed to the media's sensational portrayal of Bangladesh as a country overrun by Islamist forces with a supranational agenda. The author compares Bangladesh with Indonesia and Pakistan, thus adding a valuable global context for evaluating the politics of Muslim countries.

Helping us to make sense of this seemingly paradoxical relationship, Piper wisely holds both truths in tension as he explores the Bible's teaching on this challenging topic, graciously responds to those who disagree, and motivates us to passionately proclaim the free offer of the gospel to all people.
Download or read book The Sense Poem written by Gottfried Keller and published by Livraria Press. This book was released on 2024-05-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of Gottfried Keller's famous The Sense Poem (original german title Das Sinngedicht) followed by an Afterword by the translator, a timeline of his life and works and an index of his works. The Sense Poem ("Das Sinngedicht" in German) is a novella cycle authored by Swiss poet Gottfried Keller. Its inception commenced in Berlin around 1851 when Keller conceived initial ideas, followed by the composition of introductory chapters in 1855. The major portion of the text, however, was crafted in Zurich during 1881, concomitant with its serialization in the "Deutsche Rundschau." The Sense Poem garnered substantial acclaim among contemporary readers and literary critics, becoming a pinnacle of his literary career. Keller's innovative structuring, including chapter titles reminiscent of Cervantes' "Don Quijote," imbues the work with a playful-ironic ambiance. The male protagonist's perspective shapes the framing narrative, analogous to Cervantes' Don Quijote, contributing to the novella cycle's narrative charm. Its initial success was underscored by successive editions, with reviewers likening the work's stature to that of Boccaccio's "Decameron." Boccaccio' was a major artistic influence at the time- Herman Hesse wrote a Pathographic essay on him and his influence in Germany. The cycle derives its name from an epigram, or "Sinngedicht," by Baroque poet Friedrich von Logau. The epigram reads "How will you turn white lilies into red roses? / Kiss a white galathee: she will laugh blushing!" and alludes to Galateia, the embodiment of female beauty's dual nature—provocative allure and tempering influence. Logau's composition serves as a poetic discourse on gallant advice. The cycle's seven novellas are entwined within a framing narrative—a love story set in the romantic environs of a 19th-century German university town. The protagonist, Herr Reinhart, a young naturalist, engages in a spirited exchange with Lucie, a hostess of wit and beauty. Through the exchange of Logau's epigram, they embark on a discussion revolving around the equality of genders in fostering successful marriages, evoking tales exemplifying diverse love choices. The narrative culminates in Reinhart and Lucie's burgeoning affection.

Download or read book Sons Daughters written by Ivana Bodrozic and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivana Bodrožić’s latest award-winning novel tells a story of being locked in: socially, domestically and intimately, told through three different perspectives, all deeply marked and wounded by the patriarchy in their own way. Here the Croatian poet and writer depicts a wrenching love between a transgender man and a woman as well as a demanding love between a mother and a daughter in a narrative about breaking through and liberation of the mind, family, and society. This is a story of hidden gay and trans relationships, the effects of a near-fatal accident, and an oppressed childhood, where Ivana Bodrožić tackles the issues addressed in her previous works—issues of otherness, identity and gender, pain and guilt, injustice and violence. A daughter is paralyzed after a car crash, left without the ability to speak, trapped in a hospital bed, unable to move anything but her eyes. Although she is immobilized, her mind reels, moving through time, her memories a salve and a burden. A son is stuck in a body that he doesn’t feel is his own. He endures misperceptions and abuse on the way to becoming who he truly is. A mother who grew up being told she was never good enough, in a world with no place for the desires and choices of women. She carries with her the burden of generations. These three stories run parallel and intertwine. Three voices deepen and give perspective to one another’s truth, pain, and struggle to survive.

Download or read book A process guide for the development of a mixed methods research tool for measuring and understanding intra household decision making written by Mwakanyamale, Devis and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2023-02-13 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous approaches have been developed by researchers for measuring intra-household decisionmaking. Most use quantitative surveys that often rely on a standard set of questions that inquire about who contributes to key household decisions or women’s abilities to participate in these decisions. Such questions have been criticized for focusing too much on the identity of the decision maker and less on understanding why and how decisions get made within the household and on the multiple facets of women’s roles in decision-making processes1. To address the shortcomings of current approaches, we (an interdisciplinary group of applied gender and agriculture researchers) developed a transdisciplinary and mixed-methods approach that can be adapted across livelihoods and geographies to measure intra-household decision making and shed light on the “who,” “why,” and “how” of important household decisions. This guide describes the transdisciplinary process that was used to develop the mixed-methods research tool for understanding and measuring intra-household decision making. In our approach, we focus on measuring who makes which decisions, how, and why and how this influences food, nutrition, and economic security outcomes. This guide, therefore, provides a base for other researchers and development practitioners to develop a context-specific mixed-methods tool for understanding and measuring intra-household decision making.

This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Garabed and his father, Haroutiun Kojaian, left their beloved village of Efkere/Kayseri to immigrate to America in 1912 and 1913, they had no idea that it would be the last time that they would see their family, or their village. By the end of the First World War, still living in the United States, they were left with nothing but their memories, and a stack of letters that had been written to them from their loved ones in Efkere between the years 1912 and 1915. More than 100 years later, these letters have been painstakingly translated, and are presented here for the first time. Written primarily in the provincial Turkish of the Ottoman countryside using the Armenian alphabet, the letters also contain passages written in the now-extinct Armenian dialect of Efkere. They provide a fascinating glimpse into pre-World War I village life in Ottoman Anatolia in this pivotal time for both the Armenian and Turkish peoples.
