Book Judaism in the Theology of Sir Isaac Newton

Download or read book Judaism in the Theology of Sir Isaac Newton written by M. Goldish and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on my doctoral dissertation from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1996) of the same title. As a master's student, working on an entirely different project, I was well aware that many of Newton's theological manuscripts were located in our own Jewish National and University Library, but I was under the mistaken assumption that scores of highly qualified scholars must be assiduously scouring them and publishing their results. It never occurred to me to look at them at all until, having fmished my master's, I spoke to Professor David Katz at Tel-Aviv University about an idea I had for doctoral research. Professor Katz informed me that the project I had suggested was one which he himself had just fmished, but that I might be interested in working on the famous Newton manuscripts in the context of a project being organized by him, Richard Popkin, James Force, and the late Betty Jo Teeter Dobbs, to study and publish Newton's theological material. I asked him whether he was not sending me into the shark-infested waters of highly competitive scholarship, and learned that in fact there were only a handful of scholars in the world who actively studied and published on Newton's theology. At the time the group consisted mainly of Popkin, Force, Dobbs, Frank Manuel, Kenneth Knoespel, and David Castillejo.

Download or read book Secret Language written by Barry J. Blake and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about language that is designed to mean what it does not seem to mean. Ciphers and codes conceal messages and protect secrets. Symbol and magic hide meanings to delight or imperil. Languages made to baffle and confuse let insiders talk openly without being understood by thosebeyond the circle.Barry Blake looks at these and many more. He explores the history and uses of the slangs and argots of schools and trades. He traces the centuries-old cants used by sailors and criminals in Britain, among them Polari, the mix of Italian, Yiddish, and slang once spoken among strolling players andcircus folk and taken up by gays in the twentieth century. He examines the sacred languages of ancient cults and religions, uncovers the workings of onomancy, spells, and gematria, looks into the obliqueness of allusion and parody, and celebrates the absurdities of euphemism and jargon.Secret Language takes the reader on fascinating excursions down obscure byways of language, ranging across time and culture. With revelations on every page it will entertain anyone with an urge to know more about the most arcane and curious uses of language.

Book Isaac Newton Escaping the Laws of Nature

Download or read book Isaac Newton Escaping the Laws of Nature written by Melina Lazaridou and published by 114660. This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interactive scientific escape book that combines the mystery of escape rooms along with the fascination of the history of science. Every chapter includes two pages, one with historical information and one with the presentation of the riddle. All you need to do is read the story, solve the riddle, write down the solution and go on to the next page. To solve the riddle do not hesitate to write, draw, fold, cut, search and generally use the whole book thinking outside the box. When you are sure of the answer, you may refer to the end of the book where you can find the solutions. There, you can also find help in case you have difficulty solving a riddle as well as important "items" necessary in the quest for Newton's secret. Escape Rooms are games made up of mixed riddles that are connected by a common storyline. To solve the riddles, you need to think differently, more outside the box. You must look at each one of them from a new perspective. The history of science is the first step toward our understanding of the creation of the concepts of Physics. A story can become more interesting when it is neither expected nor commonplace. What is more, when we read about the lives of people who we have a very different opinion about, then our curiosity urges us to get to know them even better. When we learn a law of nature through the personal, cultural, and moral concerns of the person who discovered it we enhance our logical and critical thinking skills and gain a better understanding of the scientific methodology. The combination of game, storytelling and science is...the book you are buying. Enjoy!

Book The Newton Papers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah Dry
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-04-11
  • ISBN : 0199354197
  • Pages : 355 pages

Download or read book The Newton Papers written by Sarah Dry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Isaac Newton died in 1727 without a will, he left behind a wealth of papers that, when examined, gave his followers and his family a deep sense of unease. Some of what they contained was wildly heretical and alchemically obsessed, hinting at a Newton altogether stranger and less palatable than the one enshrined in Westminster Abbey as the paragon of English rationality. These manuscripts had the potential to undermine not merely Newton's reputation, but that of the scientific method he embodied. They were immediately suppressed as "unfit to be printed," and, aside from brief, troubling glimpses spread across centuries, the papers would remain hidden from sight for more than seven generations. In The Newton Papers, Sarah Dry illuminates the tangled history of these private writings over the course of nearly three hundred years, from the long span of Newton's own life into the present day. The writings, on subjects ranging from secret alchemical formulas to impassioned rejections of the Holy Trinity, would eventually come to light as they moved through the hands of relatives, collectors, and scholars. The story of their disappearance, dispersal, and rediscovery is populated by a diverse cast of characters who pursued and possessed the papers, from economist John Maynard Keynes to controversial Jewish Biblical scholar Abraham Yahuda. Dry's captivating narrative moves between these varied personalities, depicting how, as they chased the image of Newton through the thickets of his various obsessions, these men became obsessed themselves with the allure of defining the "true" Newton. Dry skillfully accounts for the ways with which Newton's pursuers have approached his papers over centuries. Ultimately, The Newton Papers shows how Newton has been made and re-made throughout history by those seeking to reconcile the cosmic contradictions of an extraordinarily complex man.
