Book The No News Is Bad News Blues

Download or read book The No News Is Bad News Blues written by Skoot Larson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-02-23 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging trumpet player Lars Lindstrom wakes up one morning to find a dead body on his patio . . . Or does he? Jazzman Lindstrom takes the mans wallet inside to give a name when he calls the police, but when officers arrive, they dont find a body or any signs that a corpse was ever in his garden at all. The wallet Lindstrom is holding, however, belongs to a terrorist suspect on the Homeland Securitys Most Wanted list, which sparks interest at nearly every law enforcement agency from the FBI on down. The hip talking Lindstrom find that, as a minor celebrity in the Port of Los Angeles town of San Pedro, he not only makes a fine patsy for a ring of Middle Eastern terrorists, but also a rich piece of bait for the men out to stop them. Lindstrom just wants to put it all behind him, keep a low profile and play his music. But in order to do that, he has to find some answers for himself as well as for the two sides playing him against each other. The search takes Lindstrom from his regular gig leading the house band at Blondys Waterfront Dive to Oslo, Norway where the suspected terrorist have their secret hide-out, and back. Changing planes in Heathrow is enough to get the British involved as well. Can a slightly alcoholic musician with a phobia of taking a punch in the mouth that might split his lip and cost a week of work become a true secret agent? In a Zen-Jazz Mystery, anything is possible.

Book The Blues Comes With Good News

Download or read book The Blues Comes With Good News written by Sonny Hall and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soul searching poetry for a new generation. Inspired by Diane di Prima, Rene Ricard, Henry Miller and others 'who tell it like it is', The Blues Comes with Good News is a collection of poems by prolific writer, Sonny Hall. The collection ranges from articulating addiction, self-destruction and identity, to romantic relationships, his journey to recovery and his unapologetic depiction of truth, through life and its happenings. At 18 years old Sonny entered a treatment centre for alcohol and drug addiction, after losing his biological mother - who he remained close to despite being adopted aged 4 - to a heroin overdose. Three months into his treatment, Hall started writing poems as a way of ordering 'all the madness' in his head. He has since written hundreds of poems, which all portray his newfound intimacy with life, figuring it out as he goes on, never failing to write sincerely about the sting of life, through a rare candour, explicit and seedy within the realms of his own indulgence. Book Blues All Day Long

Download or read book Blues All Day Long written by Wayne Everett Goins and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2014-08-30 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A member of Muddy Waters' legendary late 1940s-1950s band, Jimmy Rogers pioneered a blues guitar style that made him one of the most revered sidemen of all time. Rogers also had a significant if star-crossed career as a singer and solo artist for Chess Records, releasing the classic singles "That's All Right" and "Walking By Myself." In Blues All Day Long, Wayne Everett Goins mines seventy-five hours of interviews with Rogers' family, collaborators, and peers to follow a life spent in the blues. Goins' account takes Rogers from recording Chess classics and barnstorming across the South to a late-in-life renaissance that included new music, entry into the Blues Hall of Fame, and high profile tours with Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones. Informed and definitive, Blues All Day Long fills a gap in twentieth century music history with the story of one of the blues' eminent figures and one of the genre's seminal bands.

Book World War I on the Virginia Peninsula

Download or read book World War I on the Virginia Peninsula written by John V. Quarstein and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the United States entered World War I in 1917, the Virginia Peninsula immediately became a center for the intensive activities required to prepare the nation for war. The fertile farm fields overlooking the James River, Hampton Roads, and the Back River were quickly transformed into military camps, air fields, and training bases. Almost overnight, Newport News became the second leading port for men, horses, and supplies embarking to Europe. Shipyard workers labored around the clock producing ships. Each vessel was considered "a death blow to Prussianism," which was required to achieve victory. The Peninsula experienced rapid population growth, necessitating the construction of houses and public transportation systems. Individuals on the home front worked like "soldiers without guns" as they organized bond drives, provided recreation for doughboys passing through the port, and honored local fallen heroes. This book is first comprehensive pictorial history documenting the events that occurred on the Virginia Peninsula during World War I.

In Free Expression in the Age of the Internet , Jeremy Lipschultz investigates the Internet and its potential for profound change, analyzing the use of its technology from social, political, and economic perspectives. Lipschultz provides new insights on traditional legal concepts such as marketplace of ideas, social responsibility, and public interest, arguing that from a communication theory perspective, free expression is constrained by social norms and conformity. Lipschultz explores social limits on free expression by first examining history of print and electronic media law and regulation. He utilizes the gatekeeping metaphor, the spiral of silence, and diffusion theory to explore current data on the Internet. He uses Reno v. ACLU (1997) as a case study of current First Amendment thinking. This book includes recent evidence, including samples of content from Internet gossip columnist Matt Drudge, and the investigation of President Clinton as it unfolded on the World Wide Web.The analysis is related to broader issues about Internet content, including commercial and other communication. The new technologies raise new questions about legal and social definitions of concepts such as privacy. Free expression is explored in this book under the umbrella of a global, commercial economy that places importance on legal rights such as copyright, even where those rights limit free flow of ideas. The Internet places free expression on two tracks. On the one hand, corporate players are developing cyberspace as a new mass media. On the other hand, the Internet is virtual space where individuals have the power to connect and communicate with others in ways never before seen. This groundbreaking text advancing new media scholarship uses the most current case studies from the Internet to show free expression in practice today. Lipshultz presents a relevant and efficacious social communication theory of free expression which critically examines the necessary factors involved in comprehensive policy analysis and enactment.

Book Deluxe Anthology of Jazz Violin Styles

Download or read book Deluxe Anthology of Jazz Violin Styles written by Glenn Asch and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, violinists have played jazz, swing, blues and similar improvisational styles. With its rich tone, considerable range, and bowed rhythms and phrasing, the violin offers a unique opportunity for a creative and personal statement as a musician. This book presents a broad sampling of the styles of major jazz violinists, from blues to bebop, from jug band to jazzgrass, from big-band swing to Texas swing. Tunes represent the styles of Stéphane Grappelli, Joe Venuti, Stuff Smith, Eddie South, Mark O'Connor, Benny Thomasson, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Darol Anger. Helpful jazz theory sections with exercises alternate with tunes that show how the theory works in practice. This book has two objectives; first, to present a broad, roughly chronological sampling of major jazz violinists and the styles associated with them, and secondly, to introduce the basics of jazz theory as applied to the violin. Whether consciously or intuitively, through critical listening or by practicing jazz patterns and exercises, the more knowledge of jazz you acquire, the better you will be able to think about the content of your playing without being bound by technical and theoretical aspects. This anthology was written to help provide that foundation. Interspersed with pragmatic jazz theory lessons, you’ll find 28 original tunes in the style of various jazz violin luminaries. The book ends with an extensive discography of recommended jazz recordings with a violin focus. Mandolinists as well as other instrumentalists will find a wealth of useful information in this outstanding collection. Delightful broadcast-quality recordings of the repertoire are available online. Includes access to online audio. Wirtten for intermediate to advanced violinists.
