Download or read book South Wales and the Rising of 1839 written by Ivor Wilks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, this book provides the first full study of the carefully planned rising of south Wales miners and ironworkers in 1839 and of its collapse at the confrontation with soldiers of the 45th regiment of Newport. It examines not only the rising itself, but the factors that made it, if not inevitable, then likely. It argues that while the workers’ movement was an immediate response to the grim circumstances of the workplace, it was also deeply rooted in the centuries-old Welsh experience of repression. This title will be of particular interest to students of Victorian political and social history and well as the history of Wales.

Download or read book Lliswerry Growing Up in 1950s South Wales written by David Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 22, David Hughes left his hometown in South Wales to attend university in Surrey, England, before starting upon a career that took him across the world for the next three decades. Lliswerry takes us a step back in time to David's childhood and 1950s Newport, South Wales, when cars are few and children spend their time cycling the countryside and exploring the nearby fields, woods and reens. Here we meet a timid, overweight boy who grows up in a house run on old-fashioned values and traditions under the beady eye of the Church. Through the younger David's dry commentary on his family's antics we come to understand the backbone of this working-class town. As we watch David find his wings and toughen up, on the inside and out, we witness the town's bitter-sweet milestones - the end of rations and the introduction of television and foreign cuisines in addition to substantial building works as Newport adds to its heavy industry. Lliswerry: Growing Up in 1950s South Wales will lead you down memory lane. To those who weren't there, it offers a slice of Welsh history through one man's story. "This book is so much more than a fabulously told recollection of a young lad growing up in post-war Wales. The attention to detail and the minutiae of events are incredible in themselves but there is a hidden story between the lines. The book shows how important our formative years are in making us the adults we become. This book shows you the boy and is written by a brave, erudite and charming man." Tom Evans, author of This We Know and Flavours of Thought "David and I met about sixty years ago, when we were six years old. He lived near the old level crossings ... where we were avid train spotters. Those gates were removed some fifty years ago, but the memory lingers. Lliswerry is a fascinating tale of reminiscences, and accurately recalls life as I, too, remember it." Len Jones, founder of www.lliswerry.fsworld.co.uk

Download or read book Rethinking Stateless Nations and National Identity in Wales and the Basque Country written by Sophie Williams and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the fundamental components of national identity as understood by ordinary nation members, and the way in which it is mobilised by political elites. Drawing on an original case comparison between Wales and the Basque Country, the author suggests there are many commonalities between these two nations, particularly around the fundamentals of their national identities. However, differences occur in terms of degree of intensity of feeling and around the politicisation of identity, with more entrenched and hostile political positioning in the Basque Country than Wales. Through a multi-level comparison, the book generates insights into national identity as a theoretical concept and in a ‘stateless nation’ context. It argues for national identity's intangible, yet polemical, nature, looking at the primordialist way it is understood, its permanence and importance, coupled with its lack of everyday salience and consequent obligations.

Download or read book Digital inclusion in Wales written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Welsh Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009-08-04 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wales Office and the Welsh Assembly Government must ensure UK digital inclusion initiatives meet Welsh needs and build on existing good work to deliver on Welsh digital ambitions, says the Welsh Affairs Committee in a report published today. This report "Digital Inclusion in Wales", examines the use of digital technologies in Wales, highlights the urgent need for the eradication of broadband ’notspots' - areas with limited or no access to high speed internet connections - and says this issue must continue to receive priority attention. There should be more support to help a wider range of people use technology effectively. Employers told the Committee they need staff with better IT skills and more training opportunities. The Committee recommends the Welsh Assembly Government explicitly includes this issue in its digital inclusion strategy. The digital inclusion agenda is a complex mix of reserved and devolved matters. This brings a risk that key issues can be overlooked, for example no account has been taken of Welsh language speakers' needs in the Government's Digital Inclusion Action Plan. The Secretary of State for Wales must ensure that bodies in Wales across all sectors are fully engaged with initiatives and that the next stage of Digital Britain adequately reflects Welsh needs. Higher education institutions also have a vital role to play and should be involved in any new research opportunities. The Welsh Assembly already has successful digital inclusion projects in Wales and it should find a way to become fully involved with the UK digital inclusion and Digital Britain work so it does not miss out on policy developments and funding opportunities. The Committee also recommends the creation of a one-stop shop providing advice on the risks for young people using technology, and commends the Assembly's work tackling internet related crimes which it says should be promoted as part of the economic development strategy in Wales.
