Book Mickey Newbury Crystal Stone

Download or read book Mickey Newbury Crystal Stone written by Joe Ziemer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do Tom Jones, Nick Cave, Joan Baez, John Denver, Ray Charles, Del Shannon, Keith Richards, B.B. King, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Carol Channing, Manowar and Linda Ronstadt... have in common? Mickey Newbury. They recorded his songs. Matter of fact, Newbury's material has been covered by over 1,230 artists. That is just about everybody. His inspirational ballad "An American Trilogy" has been recorded by more than 550 artists. It was Elvis' showstopper. His "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" is the rocker that launched Kenny Rogers' career into the stratosphere. Newbury, who grew up on Houston's tough North side, is the only songwriter to place four top hits on four different charts... simultaneously. The train hopper was also instrumental in mentoring Kris Kristofferson, who says, "God, I learned more about songwriting from Mickey than I did any other single human being. He was my hero and still is." Shotgun Willie Nelson adds, "He was one of the best writers we've ever had and one of the best friends I've ever had." And that is not all. Newbury's albums enjoy an extensive cult following. Peers consider him among the best of the best, and many artists refer to his albums as "perfect." Some call him a modern day Stephen Foster. Why then is Newbury known mainly to insiders? A well-kept secret? Too good for the masses? Two truths can be stated: The man cannot be pigeonholed, and he refused to sell out. Like crystal and stone, Newbury's fascinating story is clearly and solidly laid out. It may even change a few truths. As he wrote, Time has a way of changing everything Truth has a way of changing all the time.

Book excerpt: Newbury has attracted residents and visitors to its unspoiled landscape since its incorporation in 1778. Early settlers found sustenance in Sunapee's lake and mountain as they tamed the wilderness, and later visitors found relaxation and recreation as they came to lakeside destinations by railroad and steamboat. Today Lake Sunapee continues to provide fishing and water sports, while Mount Sunapee Resort draws more than 250,000 skiers seasonally and is host to the oldest annual craftsmen's fair in the country. Nearby is the Fells, former statesman John Hay's historic home, offering art exhibits, extensive gardens, and hiking trails. Newbury Harbor hosts a train station and museum with a collection of railroad memorabilia. Newbury also offers the unique architecture of the Center Meeting House, historic buildings in timeless South Newbury village, and cheek-to-jowl cottages in Blodgett's Landing that evolved from Spiritualist campsites.

Download or read book Looks Like Rain written by Brian T. Atkinson and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mickey Newbury (1940–2002) grew up in Houston and moved to Nashville in the early 1960s, following his muse. He wrote top hits for many well-known artists, including Don Gibson, Andy Williams, Kenny Rogers, Tom Jones, and others. He is probably best known, however, for being name-checked in the song “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)” by Waylon Jennings. Newbury has been cited by Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt, and many other eminent singer-songwriters as a primary influence. In his own independent fashion, Newbury helped to loosen the grip maintained for decades by the Nashville studio system, thus paving the way for later innovators like Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe, and others. He is still the only songwriter to produce hits on four different charts in the same year in 1968: “Just Dropped In (to See What Condition My Condition was In)” on the pop/rock charts, “Sweet Memories” on easy listening, “Time Is a Thief” on the R & B charts, and “Here Comes the Rain, Baby” in country. Following the successful pattern established in his previous works on Townes Van Zandt and Ray Wylie Hubbard, veteran music journalist Brian T. Atkinson has interviewed artists such as Kris Kristofferson, Bobby Bare, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and many others to learn how Newbury’s influence continues to shape the musical and artistic approach of both seasoned and newer performers. Forewords by Larry Gatlin and Don McLean set the stage for a fascinating look back at one of the most revered songwriters and musicians of recent decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The town of Newbury, incorporating the villages of Old Town, Byfield, and Plum Island, was settled in 1635. The extensive Newbury plantation was primarily agricultural, although many early residents also earned their living through shipbuilding along the Merrimack River. Newbury is rich with natural landmarks and stunning landscapes, including a large portion of the Great Marsh, the largest salt marsh in New England. Byfield was the site of early industry, with gristmills and sawmills sprouting up along the Quascacunquen, now the Parker River, as early as the 1630s. Mills producing products from nails to woolens and snuff prospered into the 20th century. Ancient houses, many of them the homes of famous sons and daughters, stand as a legacy to Newbury's early history. During the 19th century, Plum Island became a fashionable seaside resort and hunters and fishermen took advantage of the birds and fish that proliferated there. The three communities bring together a citizenry fiercely proud of its heritage and a rich history of working and playing on land and sea.

Book The Executioner s Heart

Download or read book The Executioner s Heart written by George Mann and published by Tor Books. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Executioner's Heart--the fourth Newbury & Hobbes steampunk mystery from George Mann--the detectives are up against the most frightening villainess England has yet seen. It's normal for Charles Bainbridge, Chief Inspector of Scotland Yard, to be called to the scene of a crime, but this is the third murder in quick succession where the victim's chest has been cracked open and their heart torn out. Bainbridge suspects there's a symbolic reason for the stolen hearts, so he sends for supernatural specialist Sir Maurice Newbury and his determined assistant, Miss Veronica Hobbes. Unfortunately, neither of them are in much shape to take the case. Veronica has been hunting for some way to alleviate the mysterious forces that have been hounding her family of late, and Newbury has been retained by a private client: Edward, Prince of Wales, who's concerned that his mother, the Queen of England, is losing her grip on the nation. However, the two detectives pull together long enough to determine that the killings may be the work of a mercenary known as the Executioner. French, uncannily beautiful, her flesh covered in tattoos and inlaid with precious metals, the Executioner is famed throughout Europe, with legends going back for hundreds of years. Something is keeping her in a form of living stasis, but her heart is damaged, leaving her an emotionless shell, inexplicably driven to collect her victims' hearts as trophies. Who is the Executioner targeting, and who hired her? Why has Veronica stopped trusting Bainbridge? What does the Prince of Wales really want? These are just some of the mysteries that Newbury and Hobbes will confront on the way to unearthing the secret of the Executioner's Heart. Book Gloucester Newbury 1643

Download or read book Gloucester Newbury 1643 written by Jon Day and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2007-09-20 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The campaign that led to the first Battle of Newbury in 1643 represents a vital phase in the English Civil War, yet rarely has it received the attention it deserves. In this compelling and meticulously researched new study, Jon Day shows how the campaign was critical to the outcome of the war and the defeat of Charles I. The late summer 1643 was the military high tide for the king and his armies, yet within two months the opportunity had been squandered. The Royalists failed first to take the Parliamentarian stronghold of Gloucester and then to defeat the Earl of Essex's army at Newbury. If the Civil War had a tipping point, this was surely it.
