This study has found that, in the 21 public libraries which participate in the Scheme, government information is heavily used by a wide range of people for many purposes. Currently only five government departments, plus the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives, participate in the Scheme. At the present time electronic information falls outside the scope of the information covered by the Scheme. With increasing amounts of government information being produced in an electronic format, the challenge is to ensure that this information is freely available for citizens to access. This study provides new knowledge and highlights issues which will need careful consideration and action by the National Library and other organisations with an interest in improving public access to government information ..."--Foreword
