Book Reduce Change to Increase Improvement

Download or read book Reduce Change to Increase Improvement written by Viviane Robinson and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too much change, not enough improvement Planned changes often fail because those designing them underestimate the complexity of implementation. Reduce Change to Increase Improvement provides a practical structure for helping system and school leaders increase improvement while reducing ineffective change and innovation. By drilling down to the beliefs and values that inform the actual practice of change leaders, Robinson identifies the mindset, processes, and actual behaviors that contribute to successful reform efforts and, importantly, provide school leaders with concrete tools that enable them to be more effective. The structures described in the book are illustrated by numerous examples, cases, and conversation extracts and center on four phases of engagement: Agreeing about the problem to be solved Revealing the beliefs that sustain the current practices Evaluating the relative merit of the existing practices and proposed theory Implementing and monitoring the new theory of action "Finally, a serious, evidence-proven book about educational change that takes a different tact – beginning with the impact on the learner. Reduce Change to Increase Improvement is a treasure-trove of concrete information for educational leaders. Robinson, always cautious about "change for change sake", brilliantly delineates each step of the way for leaders using authentically-documented conversations and practical discussion-starters that guide us through this collective inquiry approach towards student improvement. All leaders need this concise, clearly-stated text to guide their intentional improvement practices. —Dr. Lyn Sharratt, International Consultant and Author OISE, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Book Mathematics Affect and Learning

Download or read book Mathematics Affect and Learning written by Peter Grootenboer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-17 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the beliefs, attitudes, values and emotions of students in Years 5 to 8 (aged 10 to 14 years) about mathematics and mathematics education. Fundamentally, this book focuses on the development of affective views and responses towards mathematics and mathematics learning. Furthermore, it seems that students develop their more negative views of mathematics during the middle school years (Years 5 to 8), and so here we concentrate on students in this critical period. The book is based on a number of empirical studies, including an enquiry undertaken with 45 children in Years 5 and 6 in one school; a large-scale quantitative study undertaken with students from a range of schools across diverse communities in New Zealand; and two related small-scale studies with junior secondary students in Australia. This book brings substantial, empirically-based evidence to the widely held perception that many students have negative views of mathematics, and these affective responses develop during the middle years of school. The data for this book were collected with school students, and students who were actually engaged in learning mathematics in their crucial middle school years. The findings reported and discussed here are relevant for researchers and mathematics educators, policy makers and curriculum developers, and teachers and school principals engaged in the teaching of mathematics.

Download or read book Mathematical Subjects written by Fiona Walls and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-10 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching and learning mathematics is a political act in which children, teachers, parents, and policy makers are made visible as subjects. As they learn about mathematics, children are also learning about themselves – who they are, who they might become. We can choose to listen or not to what children have to say about learning mathematics. Such choices constitute us in relations of power. Mathematical know-how is widely regarded as essential not only to the life chances of individuals, but also to the health of communities and the economic well-being of nations. With the globalisation of education in an increasingly market-oriented world, mathematics has received intensified attention in the first decade of the twenty-first century with a shifting emphasis on utilitarian aspects of mathematics. This is reflected in the reconceptualisation of mathematical competence as mathematical literacy, loosely conceived as those ways of thinking, reasoning and working “mathematically” that allow us to engage effectively in everyday situations, in many occupations, and the cut and thrust of world economies as active, empowered and participatory citizens. It is no surprise then that mathematics has become one of the most politically charged subjects in primary school curricula worldwide. We are experiencing an unprecedented proliferation of regional and national strategies to establish benchmarks, raise standards, enhance achievement, close gaps, and leave no child behind in mathematics education. Industries have sprung up around the design, administration and monitoring of standardised assessment to measure and compare children’s mathematical achievement against identified benchmarks and each other.

There are reflective tasks throughout, which encourage you to develop and apply your theoretical knowledge to your own experiences. Key features include: Reviews of existing policy and research and implications for practice Reflective tasks with commentary, encouraging you to develop and apply your knowledge Case studies of real student experiences Practical activities and ideas to support the planning, teaching and assessment of adult numeracy Drawing on the substantial experience of the contributors, who have a wealth of experience as practitioners and researchers in the field, this book is an essential resource for trainee and practising teachers of adult numeracy and mathematics. It is also an ideal textbook to support teacher training courses leading to a subject specific qualification in teaching numeracy to adults. Contributors: Jackie Ashton, John Barton, Carolyn Brooks, Martyn Edwards, Janette Gibney, David Holloway, David Kaye, Beth Kelly, Barbara Newmarch, Helen Oughton, David Prinn, Diana Spurr, Rebecca Woolley "This is a quite unique book about teaching adult numeracy, which will be invaluable to the many practitioners in this field. The chapters, contributed by a group of experienced and successful lecturers and practitioners, include all aspects of this field, from methods of teaching specific mathematical topics to more general explorations of dyscalculia and emotional factors in adult learners. Each chapter includes research findings and thoughtful presentation of ideas with practical ideas for teaching, and tasks for the reader. This is a market which has not been served well in the past, so it is good to see the gap filled at last." Margaret Brown, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics Education, King's College London, UK "The editors of this book set out to produce a text that would support teacher-education programmes for adult numeracy, and their book does that and more. The content covers different types of learners, different settings, different understandings of what numeracy actually is; and ranges from commentary on research through case studies to "how to" hints and tips for teaching. Chapters 7 (on provoking mathematical thinking) and 8 (attitudes, beliefs and teaching) should be a required read for any adult numeracy teacher. The book would be at home on any numeracy teacher's desk, and would make an excellent set text for numeracy teacher training courses." Carol Randall, course co-ordinator for numeracy in the department of Lifelong Learning Teacher Education, University of Greenwich, UK "This book is a welcome addition to the growing literature on adult numeracy. It should be essential reading for trainee and practising adult numeracy educators. It brings together relevant research and professional wisdom on a wide variety of aspects of adult numeracy teaching and learning in an accessible way, with well-focussed tasks for readers to extend their knowledge and understanding. While the book is born out of UK concerns and issues, it is also relevant to international readers. Highly recommended." Trustee, Adults Learning Mathematics - A Research Forum (ALM -- www.alm-online.net/)
