  • Author : David Monod
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2016-04-22
  • ISBN : 1501703994

Download or read book The Soul of Pleasure written by David Monod and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Show business is today so essential to American culture it's hard to imagine a time when it was marginal. But as David Monod demonstrates, the appetite for amusements outside the home was not "natural": it developed slowly over the course of the nineteenth century. The Soul of Pleasure offers a new interpretation of how the taste for entertainment was cultivated. Monod focuses on the shifting connection between the people who built successful popular entertainments and the public who consumed them. Show people discovered that they had to adapt entertainment to the moral outlook of Americans, which they did by appealing to sentiment. The Soul of Pleasure explores several controversial forms of popular culture—minstrel acts, burlesques, and saloon variety shows—and places them in the context of changing values and perceptions. Far from challenging respectability, Monod argues that entertainments reflected and transformed the audience’s ideals. In the mid-nineteenth century, sentimentality not only infused performance styles and the content of shows but also altered the expectations of the theatergoing public. Sentimental entertainment depended on sensational effects that produced surprise, horror, and even gales of laughter. After the Civil War the sensational charge became more important than the sentimental bond, and new forms of entertainment gained in popularity and provided the foundations for vaudeville, America’s first mass entertainment. Ultimately, it was American entertainment’s variety that would provide the true soul of pleasure.

Book Works about John Dewey 1886 1995

Download or read book Works about John Dewey 1886 1995 written by Barbara Levine and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although she has devised a new format for this bibliography, Barbara Levine has included most of the materials published in the two editions of the Checklist of Writings about John Dewey. Material new to this volume includes recently discovered items published during the ninety years covered by the Checklist as well as items published since 1977. Because certain studies at best have only marginal value or because they can be obtained through ordinary library research tools, Levine has deleted some classes of material that appeared in the 1974 and 1978 Checklist editions: primary sources with only brief references to Dewey; the entire section entitled "Unpublished Works about Dewey" (which included theses, dissertations, and papers presented at meetings); and Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) documents. Levine has included all of the material published about Dewey during the 108 years between 1886 and 1994 and has included many 1995 items as well. She has verified all items and, whenever possible, obtained copies. She has discovered hundreds of items omitted from the second edition of the Checklist and has augmented the current bibliography by nearly two thousand items published since 1977. The bibliography is divided into four parts. The first, "Books and Articles about Dewey," lists works alphabetically by author. Replies and responses to articles immediately follow the work cited. The "Reviews of Dewey's Works" lists titles alphabetically. Reviews are grouped alphabetically by journal under the Dewey work reviewed. The "Author Index" includes multiple authors and editors, authors of replies and responses, and reviewers of works both by and about Dewey. The "Title Key-Word Index" lists key words from most titles and subtitles. The CD-ROM version of Works about John Dewey contains both Windows and Macintosh formats and provides increased search capabilities.

Book Counterfeiting Labor s Voice

Download or read book Counterfeiting Labor s Voice written by Mark A. Lause and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confidence man and canny operative, charlatan and manipulator--William A. A. Carsey emerged from the shadow of Tammany Hall to build a career undermining working-class political organizations on behalf of the Democratic Party. Mark A. Lause’s biography of Carsey takes readers inside the bare-knuckle era of Gilded Age politics. An astroturfing trailblazer and master of dirty tricks, Carsey fit perfectly into a Democratic Party that based much of its post-Civil War revival on shattering third parties and gathering up the pieces. Lause provides an in-depth look at Carsey’s tactics and successes against the backdrop of enormous changes in political life. As Carsey used a carefully crafted public persona to burrow into unsuspecting organizations, the forces he represented worked to create a political system that turned voters into disengaged civic consumers and cemented America’s ever-fractious two-party system.

Book John Wilkes Booth Day by Day

Download or read book John Wilkes Booth Day by Day written by Arthur F. Loux and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1865, at the age of 26, Booth had much to lose: a loving family, hosts of friends, adoring women, professional success as one of America's foremost actors, and the promise of yet more fame and fortune. Yet he formed a daring conspiracy to abduct Lincoln and barter him for Confederate prisoners of war. The Civil War ended before Booth could carry out his plan, so he assassinated the president, believing him to be a tyrant who had turned the once-proud Union into an engine of oppression that had devastated the South. This book gives a day-by-day account of Booth's complex life--from his birth May 10, 1838, to his death April 26, 1865, and the aftermath--and offers a new understanding of the crime that shocked a nation.
