"You mean I have to share you with 23 million other people?" Stephanie has never been to Asia; Portland, Oregon seems to be a metropolis to this small-town girl. Josh has spent years living in Taiwan and plans to make that country his home once again. Several years later, they've packed a few essentials, given away everything else and are on a flight to Taipei. From five-star luxury to a hostel on an island that was once a penal colony, from the chaotic excitement of urban night markets to an isolated mountain village, Josh shows Stephanie the country that has claimed him. Hoping she'll fall in love with Taiwan and choose to live there with him, he's even chosen the place where he plans to propose to her. And then they visit a fortune-teller. Stephanie, plunged into a whirlwind exploration of Taiwan before she's even recovered from jet lag, is an artist faced with a nonstop barrage of sensory overload. She doesn't speak Chinese, she's on a gluten-free diet, and she's firmly rooted in Josh's itinerary, where there's no room for sitting still. Luckily she's a woman with a taste for adventure. Formosa Moon sets the bar for a whole new form of travel writing. Written in two voices, it gives the vivid impressions of a first-time Asia traveler and the deep-rooted knowledge of a man who is returning home. Stephanie's excitement, confusion, and delight combine with Josh's irreverent humor and carefully researched facts to create a travel memoir/travel guide that's cloaked in a quest for home. Josh has already found his but he knows Stephanie needs to find hers in her own way. And then there's that fortune-teller...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An indispensable guide for readers traveling to Taiwan for vacation, work, or school. It’s chock-full of information that will help people successfully navigate the country." -Library Journal Taiwan has always been an attractive place to study and work. In fact, long before Mainland China became an option for Westerners, Taiwan was the place to study Chinese and work in a Mandarin Chinese speaking environment. As the People’s Republic of China (P.R.C.) gained economic and political strength in the world, Westerners naturally gravitated toward this new market. Language programs and jobs for Westerners flourished. In the past decade there has been a renewed interest in Taiwan. This is undoubtedly due to a dramatic increase in cost of living in the P.R.C., increasing government regulation and scrutiny of foreigners, the increased political tension between China and the West, and generally the increasing difficulty doing business and studying in China in a free and fair way. In recent years Taiwan has once again emerged as an attractive place to study, work, and live. Taiwan offers a free, open, and safe environment that is welcoming to outsiders. While the cost of living in Taiwan’s big cities is about the same as the big cities in Mainland China, it is much easier for a foreigner to navigate than in China. This book provides a practical, up-to-date, hands-on guide to navigating life in Taiwan. It is not a travel guidebook, but rather provides detailed information for the foreign resident in Taiwan, whether they be studying or working. It provides a wealth of information covering everything from renting apartments, taking care of your daily needs, what and where to eat, to Taiwanese work ethic and business culture, how to make the most of your study of Chinese, how to get around, and so on. The book is illustrated with relevant photos that contextualize the text, and enhance reader’s understanding of the information.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Joseph Levenson Post-1900 Book Prize This cultural study of public space examines the cityscape of Taipei, Taiwan, in rich descriptive prose. Contemplating a series of seemingly banal subjects--maps, public art, parks--Joseph Allen peels back layers of obscured history to reveal forces that caused cultural objects to be celebrated, despised, destroyed, or transformed as Taipei experienced successive regime changes and waves of displacement. In this thoughtful stroll through the city, we learn to look beyond surface ephemera, moving from the general to the particular to see sociocultural phenomena in their historical and contemporary contexts. Book Globalizing Taipei

Download or read book Globalizing Taipei written by Reginald Kwok and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taipei's quest to become a global city is the key to its urban development. Globalizing Taipei looks at this "Asian Dragon", a major city in the South China Growth Triangle and a centre for transnational production, revealing how the development of this capital has received firm state support but is conditioned by international and domestic politics. The book is divided into four parts: economic and spatial restructuring, state and society realignment, social differentiation and cultural reorientation. Each analyzes the interaction of international, state and local politics in the shaping of the city's urban environment since World War II. All contributors to this edited volume are Taiwan scholars presenting critical insiders' views. Based on each author's specialization and research focus, each chapter provides an in-depth consideration of one of Taipei's developmental issues generated by globalization. Collectively they provide broad, insightful and coherent coverage of this crucial time in Taipei's global transmutation.

Book Assessing the Presidency of Ma Ying jiu in Taiwan

Download or read book Assessing the Presidency of Ma Ying jiu in Taiwan written by André Beckershoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years of the Ma Ying-jiu presidency in Taiwan were controversial from the beginning. When he came to power in 2008, Ma was considered the strongest and most popular KMT presidential candidate since Lee Teng-hui. However, his rapprochement towards China met with increasing resistance and by the time he stepped down in 2016, he enjoyed the lowest support rates of any incumbent president. What happened in between? This book undertakes a balanced empirical assessment of the achievements and failures of the Ma Ying-jiu era. Renowned Taiwan scholars analyse the changing political environment that shaped the Ma presidency, covering important topics such as Taiwan’s evolving nationalism and rising civil societal activism, cross-strait economic integration and migration, and the factors determining its ‘international space’. As the first comprehensive scholarly work on the Ma Ying-jiu presidency, this books is a must read for students and scholars of Taiwanese politics and society, cross-strait relations and East Asian politics in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taiwan is a small island located in Eastern Asia, between the South China Sea and the East China Sea. It is officially known as the Republic of China and has a population of over 23 million people. Taiwan is known for its beautiful landscapes, friendly people, and vibrant culture. The economy is largely based on manufacturing and exports, with electronics being the largest sector. Taiwan is also known for its food, with a variety of dishes influenced by the cultures of China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. While Taiwan is a small island, it has a rich and complex history. Originally inhabited by Austronesian tribes, it was colonized by the Dutch in the 17th century and later ruled by the Qing Dynasty of China. In 1895, Taiwan was ceded to Japan, who controlled the island until the end of World War II. After the war, Taiwan was returned to China, but in 1949, the communist party won the Chinese Civil War and established the People's Republic of China on the mainland. The Nationalist government fled to Taiwan and established the Republic of China, which continues to govern the island today. While Taiwan has faced challenges related to its political status and relationship with China, it has emerged as a prosperous and democratic nation with a unique identity and culture.

Book Taiwan s Politics In Action Struggling To Win At The Ballot Box

Download or read book Taiwan s Politics In Action Struggling To Win At The Ballot Box written by John F Copper and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taiwan's Politics in Action: Struggling to Win at the Ballot Box is about the most interesting and exciting aspects of Taiwan's politics: political competition in the form of electioneering, campaigns and voting. The author first analyzes the theories, constructs or simply ideas about elections, especially who wins them and why.The most discussed by the pundits and the scholars are the watermelon and the pendulum theory: voting as before or not. The economic, or pocketbook, theory is also popular — although whether this means economic growth or greater equity has changed. Which party or candidate has the most money is also predictive. Other constructs or simply ideas are also commonplace. Divide and conquer is another approach. Another is the best campaign agenda; so too picking the most attractive candidates. Professionalism in campaigning and the use of social media are also favorite ideas. So is the appeal to voters' ethnicity, espousing liberal or conservative ideas, using protest, focusing on constant concerns such as peace and corruption and finally, the appeals of populism and progressivism. The author then examines Taiwan's two most recent elections, the 2018 mid-term (or collection of local elections) and the 2020 national presidential and legislative election to apply the theories. The Nationalist Party or Kuomintang (KMT) won the former; the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won the latter, giving the observer a choice of evidence about how to win.The author concludes that Taiwan's democracy is being challenged, but is still popular in spite of strong external forces and other worries.
