Book excerpt: Though the prevalence of mental health difficulties among children and young people is high, few are accessing services. In response, the New South Wales Government is trialling an Assertive Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAHMS), which involves a flexible, mobile, pro-active, intensive, sensitive, and minimally disruptive approach to engaging families in community, school, home, and other non-clinical settings. It is being trialled in three sites. This report presents the findings and recommendations of the trial, which investigated how well the program had been implemented, implementation facilitators and barriers, whether it reached the intended target group, stakeholder satisfaction, impact on the service system, impact on children and young people, impact on hospital admission rates, and whether the introduction of the service has made a difference. The evaluation ran for 2.5 years and involved a range of methods including analysis of program data and interviews with key stakeholders. The overall finding was that the Assertive Community CAMHS model meets a clear need in service provision.
