Book excerpt: Excerpt from First in the Field: A Story of New South Wales "I say, don't, Green: let the poor things alone!" "You mind your own business. Oh! bother the old thorns!" Brian Green snatched his hand out of the quickset hedge into which he had thrust it, to reach the rough outside of a nest built by a bird, evidently in the belief that the hawthorn leaves would hide it from sight, and while they were growing the thorns would protect it from mischievous hands. But the leaves opened out slowly that cold spring, and a party of boys from Dr. Dunham's school, the Friary, Broadhurst, Kent, was not long in spying out the unlucky parents' attempt at house-building and nursery. Still, the thorns did their duty to some extent when Brian Green of the red head leaped across the big dry ditch, rudely crushing a great clump of primroses and forcing them down the slope, for when the freckled-faced lad thrust his hand in to grasp the nest a sharp prick made him withdraw it, while this action brought it in contact with a natural chevaux de frise, scarified the back, and made a long scratch on his thumb. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Wallaby: Through Victoria As it is I can only write about Victoria as I know it. There are many mistakes that I may have made through my inability to see all sides of a question; but they are at least honest mistakes, and not the deliberate misstatement of facts, from which Australia has so often suffered. Oi course, there are numberless phases of life out here which I have never even touched: my nose has been too close to the grindstone, while life has resolved itself for the most part into a mere struggle for existence. Still, that very struggle has brought me into touch with real people, and with the many grades of society which are to be found here as elsewhere, in spite of all the theories of democracy. Book Two Voyages to New South Wales and Van Diemen s Land

Download or read book Two Voyages to New South Wales and Van Diemen s Land written by Thomas Reid and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Voyages to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land: With a Description of the Present Condition of That Interesting Colony The same benevolence which shed a ray of celestial light over the poor African's horizon, has also held up the Gospel beacon to the benighted sinner of its own climes, and forbidden despair. Mercy, commuting capital punishment for transportation, had snatched the criminals from the vengeance of the statute law and it then became matter of inquiry, whether impri sonment in Hulks, or Houses of Correction, or mere transmission to distant colonies, was not the ultimate and only good, which, in due regard to the permanent security of society, could be fitly provided for those degraded and unhappy persons. But that wakeful care which ever attends the proceedings of the truly good, sought out with anxiety a further means of relieving their miserable condition; and thus that useful em ployment on board the Hulks, and, latterly, a better regulated management in the Houses of Correction, have originated and tended to produce the present vi sible beneficial effects. Book Land Labour and Gold Or Two Years in Victoria Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Land Labour and Gold Or Two Years in Victoria Vol 1 of 2 written by William Howitt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land, Labour, and Gold; Or Two Years in Victoria, Vol. 1 of 2: With Visits to Sydney and Van Diemen's Land This edition has been delayed some time in the hope that I should be able to record the settlement of the great question of the colony - the Land Question; but although the Home Government in May, 1856, granted to the Australian colonies, in their new constitutions, full power to deal with the waste lands, the squatter influence has hitherto prevailed to prevent the final completion of that great and most vital measure. The battle of interests alluded to in the original preface to these volumes, is now fighting, and bids fair to be of some duration. Without waiting further I have, therefore, wholly revised this work, putting out matter which has lost its value, from the progress of events, but retaining the picture of the colony at the period of my visit as a history of that singular time, which the public will long look back to with curiosity and surprise. In a new chapter I have traced, from authentic sources, the progress of the colony up to this time, - so that the world will be able to behold its most recent features. Book Spatial Cultures

Book excerpt: What is the relationship between how cities work and what cities mean? Spatial Cultures: Towards a New Social Morphology of Cities Past and Present announces an innovative research agenda for urban studies in which themes and methods from urban history, social theory and built environment research are brought into dialogue across disciplinary and chronological boundaries. The collection confronts the recurrent epistemological impasse that arises between research focussing on the description of material built environments and that which is concerned primarily with the people who inhabit, govern and write about cities past and present. A reluctance to engage substantively with this issue has been detrimental to scholarly efforts to understand the urban built environment as a meaningful agent of human social experience. Drawing on a wide range of historical and contemporary urban case studies, as well as a selection of theoretical and methodological reflections, the contributions to this volume seek to historically, geographically and architecturally contextualize diverse spatial practices including movement, encounter, play, procession and neighbourhood. The aim is to challenge their tacit treatment as universal categories in much writing on cities and to propose alternative research possibilities with implications as much for urban design thinking as for history and the social sciences.
