Book excerpt: Ponce de Leon is reputed to have entered the inlet now named for him at New Smyrna Beach during his first Florida exploration in 1513. Jonathan Dickenson crossed the inlet to safety with the Spanish in 1696, and Dr. Andrew Turnbull created his short-lived New Smyrna settlement in 1768. Later pirates and plunderers entered through the inlet and wreaked havoc, and American Indian chief Wildcat terrorized the area. Federal navy cannonading destroyed the community in 1863, and the freezes of 1895 and 1896 decimated the orange groves. The people of New Smyrna persevered through it all to make New Smyrna the charming community it is today. This book offers a wide view of this history, mostly through images from the family archives of Zelia Mary Wilson Sweett.

Download or read book New Smyrna Beach written by Robert Redd and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1768, Scottish physician Andrew Turnbull arrived in Florida with more than 1,200 indentured servants. He and his partners dreamed of establishing a plantation settlement that would make them wealthy. Despite some successes, New Smyrna was not the financial windfall they had hoped for, and after only nine years, the settlement failed. Disgruntled workers appealed to East Florida governor Patrick Tonyn, who granted them their freedom. Many of the now free settlers took residence in St. Augustine. In the succeeding years, New Smyrna has seen Civil War skirmishes, the addition of "Beach" to its name, a merger with Coronado Beach, the rise and fall of the rail industry, and a marked increase in local and out-of-state tourism. The "World's Safest Bathing Beach" is no longer a local secret.

Book Historic Sites Landmarks of New Smyrna Beach

Download or read book Historic Sites Landmarks of New Smyrna Beach written by Robert Redd and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Smyrna Beach is the third-oldest city in Florida behind only St. Augustine and Pensacola. Originally settled by Dr. Andrew Turnbull in 1768, the city accumulated significant, intriguing and stunning monuments to its past. An unusual-looking memorial to world war heroes-a cross, battle helmet and eagle-sits at Riverside Park. One of the oddest sites is a single-stone cemetery with a vault dedicated to the memory of Charles Dummett. Because of the insects that inhabit Ponce Inlet, a well-known landmark was originally named Mosquito Inlet Lighthouse. Local author and historian Robert Redd guides readers through the iconic historical landmarks of "Florida's Secret Pearl." Book jacket.

Book Surfing in New Smyrna Beach

Download or read book Surfing in New Smyrna Beach written by Kate Cumiskey and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Smyrna Beach is a lovely slip of island off Central Florida's east coast, an inlet below the bustle of Daytona and worlds away. Legend tells us Ponce de Leon landed here before sailing to St. Augustine to found North America's oldest city. Bordered on the west by the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, the south by Cape Canaveral, the north by the notorious inlet of Crane's The Open Boat, and the east by the Atlantic, New Smyrna is paradise found. The town has fostered more world-class surfers than any other on earth. Here surfing is not a sport, hobby, or pastime. Surfing is a way of life with its own rules, language, culture, and customs. Open these pages to meet the pioneers and the professionals, the grommets, and maybe a kook or two.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up and living in Central Florida, I have had the privileged opportunity to spend many weekends traveling back and forth to some of Florida's best beaches (South Beach, Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, and more) and area attractions (Disney World, Sea World, and Busch Gardens) as a child and adult. From these travels, I have gained a multitude of insights into the "Do's" and "Do Not's" when vacationing in Florida. Armed with my "expert" vacationing insights and love of writing, I offer to you, the reader, my experiences, insights, internet finding, and personal thoughts about traveling to different locales within the state of Florida. Specifically, for this book, my wife, Tishauna, and I, have visited New Smyrna Beach numerous times over the years. From our frequent visits, we have formed some insightful opinions about hotels, restaurants, bars, retail shops, and other businesses in the area. It is these insights and experiences that we wish to share with you. The structure of the books was designed to help you find insightful opinions about potential restaurants, hotels, bars and other businesses that you may frequent, while staying at or visiting New Smyrna Beach. Further, we also, for the most part, include the establishment's address, popular items sold, and Google reviews. The end objective is to offer you first hand, detailed information, and discussions about the area's businesses, before you spend your scarce vacationing time patronizing the establishments.
