Book The Politics of Nonassimilation

Download or read book The Politics of Nonassimilation written by David Verbeeten and published by Northern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the twentieth century, Eastern European Jews in the United States developed a left-wing political tradition. Their political preferences went against a fairly broad correlation between upward mobility and increased conservatism or Republican partisanship. Many scholars have sought to explain this phenomenon by invoking antisemitism, an early working-class experience, or a desire to integrate into a universal social order. In this original study, David Verbeeten instead focuses on the ways in which left-wing ideologies and movements helped to mediate and preserve Jewish identity in the context of modern tendencies toward bourgeois assimilation and ethnic dissolution. Verbeeten pursues this line of inquiry through case studies that highlight the political activities and aspirations of three "generations" of American Jews. The life of Alexander Bittelman provides a lens to examine the first generation. Born in Ukraine in 1892, Bittelman moved to New York City in 1912 and went on to become a founder of the American Communist Party after World War I. Verbeeten explores the second generation by way of the American Jewish Congress, which came together in 1918 and launched significant campaigns against discrimination within civil society before, during, and especially after World War II. Finally, he considers the third generation in relation to the activist group New Jewish Agenda, which operated from 1980 to 1992 and was known for its advocacy of progressive causes and its criticism of particular Israeli governments and policies. By focusing on individuals and organizations that have not previously been subjects of extensive investigation, Verbeeten contributes original research to the fields of American, Jewish, intellectual, and radical history. His insightful study will appeal to specialists and general readers interested in those areas.

Book excerpt: The night of the Seder is an opportunity not only to transmit our history and tradition, but to uncover new and deeper meanings in the text of the Haggada. The insights we can gain from this most ancient of books are as relevant to our lives today as they have ever been. For over two decades, Rav Shalom Rosner has delivered an annual series of shiurim on the Haggada. The Shalom Rav Haggada is a selection of those lectures, edited and adapted by Marc Lesnick. Derived from a wide spectrum of sources that include Rishonim, Aharonim, Hasidic masters, contemporary rabbanim, and scholars with an assortment of hashkafot (philosophies), this array of ideas will enable all participants at the Seder to connect to this monumental evening from their own personal perspectives. Including short introductory articles on topics relating to the Haggada and Pesah; a compelling commentary on the Haggada itself; and an insightful commentary on Shir HaShirim, traditionally recited during Pesah, the Shalom Rav Haggada is bound to spark new ideas and meaningful discourse for those participating in the Seder. This Haggada is an especially valuable resource for Seder leaders to prepare in advance the most pertinent passages for family and guests, to empower and inspire. Also includes Shir HaShirim.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking is in vogue these days. Many of us are continually, even obsessively striving and seeking—for something or other. But are we ever satisfied? What is enough? Holly Whitcomb presents the spiritual practice of finding as the antidote to chronic seeking and as the doorway to a grateful awareness of having received enough. She reflects on wisdom distilled by the “finders”—poets, playwrights, psychologists, and theologians—and derived from her own experience. When we engage in finding, we recognize with humility and wonder that the universe contains possibilities beyond our power to imagine. The Practice of Finding is an inspiring guide to that journey of discovery.

Book Edith Stein and Regina Jonas

Download or read book Edith Stein and Regina Jonas written by Emily Leah Silverman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book examines the lives of two extraordinary, religious women. Both Edith Stein and Regina Jonas were German Jewish women who demonstrated 'deviant' religious desires as they pursued their spiritual paths to serve their communities during the Holocaust. Both were religious visionaries viewed as iconoclasts in their own times. Stein, the first woman to receive a doctorate in philosophy from Husserl, the founder of phenomenology, claimed her Jewish identity while she was still a cloistered Carmelite nun. Jonas, the first woman rabbi in Jewish history, served as a rabbi in Berlin and Theresienstadt concentration camp. A study of a contemplative and a rabbi, the book ranges across many spiritual and theological questions, not least it offers a remarkable exploration of the theology of spiritual resistance. For Stein, this meant redemption and the transmutation of suffering on the cross; for Jonas, acts of compassion bring the face of God into our presence.
