Book excerpt: Almost every month in the year has a secular holiday -- and on those "special" Sundays, preachers need to balance honoring the occasion with maintaining their focus on the proclamation of God's Word. It can be a challenging task, but it also presents a great opportunity to uncover the religious significance of our civic celebrations. In this extensive volume of inspiring messages, Alex Gondola draws on the rich variety of American culture and scriptural insight to remind us that holidays truly are holy days. Great for personal reading, adult study groups, or fresh sermon ideas, Holidays Are Holy Days is a versatile resource that you'll draw on throughout the year. Sermons are included for: - New Year's Day - Martin Luther King Day - Super Bowl Sunday - Valentine's Day - Presidents' Day - St. Patrick's Day - April Fool's Day - Earth Day - Mother's Day - Memorial Day - Father's Day - Independence Day - Labor Day - Grandparent's Day - Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day - Halloween/All Saints - Reformation Sunday - Veterans' Day - Thanksgiving - Christmas How does one avoid simplistic, even overly sentimental, preaching and yet address themes that are important to many American churchgoers? In this book Alex Gondola masterfully navigates his way into insightful sermons on themes which often tax the imagination of excellent preachers. Novice and seasoned preachers will benefit from this book, and all persons who read it will be inspired. Benjamin Griffin President Emeritus Andover Newton Theological School This is biblical preaching in the best sense: informative, creatively theological, challenging, invitational, occasionally wry, always participatory, and faithful to the God whose interests inform every page. In these sermons Gondola weaves hard data, history, and practical theology in the service of challenging Christians to live faithfully in the 21st century. Nancy S. Taylor Minister and President Massachusetts Conference, United Church of Christ Designed for those special days in our "civil religion" that preachers often find challenging, these expertly crafted sermons make an intelligent, creative use of scripture that demonstrates the relevance of those ancient texts to the present day. Filled with stories from everyday life, they reach both the head and the heart, and they have a social conscience. Kenneth Cauthen John Price Crozer Griffith Professor of Theology Emeritus Colgate-Rochester-Crozer Divinity School Author of Rejoicing in Life's "Melissa Moments" Alex A. For days marked in the church year, the challenge is how to speak a fresh word about a familiar theme or story. For days marked in the civil calendar, the challenge is to discern within secular celebrations appropriate connections with the Christian gospel. In Preaching the Calendar, masterful preacher J. Book Sermons for Special Days

Download or read book Sermons for Special Days written by David George Rogne and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Rogne's "Sermons for Special Days "presents a wonderful opportunity for pastors and congregations to connect faith to their everyday lives. The unique aspect of Rogne's collection of sermons is that they are not confined to the pulpit, for each sermon can be used in a small group setting or in private devotionals. Rogne's reliance upon history, literature, and scripture will enlighten any student of the word, and each sermon will encourage congregations to embrace a dig-deep approach toward God's truth. Some of the sermons for special days included in this book are: Charles Wesley -- Heritage Sunday (Psalm 100) Something New -- Maundy Thursday (John 13:34) Does God Have a Word for You! -- Bible Sunday (2 Timothy 3:14-17) Say It with Music -- Music/Choir Recognition (Ephesians 5:17-20) Communion by the Sea -- World Communion Sunday (John 6:5-15, 25-35) When the Good Times Roll -- Thanksgiving Day (Deuteronomy 8:11-18) Are You Ready for Christmas? -- Christmas Eve (Titus 2:11-15) While Rogne has designed his sermons to be delivered on special days -- New Year's Day, Mission Sunday, and Father's Day, to name a few -- the power of each sermon extends well beyond those events as Rogne reminds us that in order to live a life well lived, we must constantly examine the life we are living. David G. Rogneserved as senior minister at a number of United Methodist congregations in southern California for 39 years. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Rogne received his M.Div. degree from Fuller Theological Seminary and his D.Min. degree from the Claremont School of Theology, where his doctoral project involved first-person preaching. Rogne currently writes, lectures, and preaches on special occasions and is a resident of South Carolina. He is also the author of"All About the Kingdom," "Telling It Like It Was," "Let Me Tell You..."(CSS), and also a collaborator on"Sermons on the Gospel Readings, Series I, Cycle B."

This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...
