Book Political Culture in Late Medieval Britain

Download or read book Political Culture in Late Medieval Britain written by Linda Clark and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight studies of aspects of C15 England, united by a common focus on the role of ideas in political developments of the time. The concept of "political culture" has become very fashionable in the last thirty years, but only recently has it been consciously taken up by practitioners of late-medieval English history, who have argued for the need to acknowledge the role of ideas in politics. While this work has focused on elite political culture, interest in the subject has been growing among historians of towns and villages, especially as they have begun to recognise the importance of both internal politics and national government in the affairs of townsmen and peasants. This volume, the product of a conference on political culture in the late middle ages, explores the subject from a variety of perspectives and in a variety of spheres. It is hoped that it will put the subject firmly on the map for the study of late-medieval England and lead to further exploration of political culture in this period. Contributors CAROLINE BARRON, ALAN CROMARTIE, CHRISTOPHER DYER, MAURICE KEEN, MIRI RUBIN, BENJAMIN THOMPSON, JOHN WATTS, JENNY WORMALD. LINDA CLARK is editor, History of Parliament; CHRISTINE CARPENTER is Reader in History, University ofCambridge.

Book excerpt: A masterful work of personal reportage, this volume is also a vibrant portrait of a mysterious people and an essential document of a disappearing culture. Fabled, feared, romanticized, and reviled, the Gypsies—or Roma—are among the least understood people on earth. Their culture remains largely obscure, but in Isabel Fonseca they have found an eloquent witness. In Bury Me Standing, alongside unforgettable portraits of individuals—the poet, the politician, the child prostitute—Fonseca offers sharp insights into the humor, language, wisdom, and taboos of the Roma. She traces their exodus out of India 1,000 years ago and their astonishing history of persecution: enslaved by the princes of medieval Romania; massacred by the Nazis; forcibly assimilated by the communist regimes; evicted from their settlements in Eastern Europe, and most recently, in Western Europe as well. Whether as handy scapegoats or figments of the romantic imagination, the Gypsies have always been with us—but never before have they been brought so vividly to life. Includes fifty black and white photos.

Book Never Give in

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alastair Davidson
  • Publisher : Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Never Give in written by Alastair Davidson and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a half century, the experience of Resistance has formed a central reference point within the world of Italian politics and culture. The essays that make up Never Give In offer a critical assessment both of that legacy, and some of the major political forces that have laid claim to it. At the same time, the authors of these essays argue that the Resistance continues as more than simply nostalgia. In each of their historiographical revisions, they also show - even in the much more complicated and less heroic accounts of what happened - a continuing ethic, a way of being and acting politically that is of abiding relevance.
