Book excerpt: Wandering Dragons begins in a small village called Boksa, located on the banks of the Pearl River in Canton, China approximately fifteen kilometers southeast of Macao. The village was settled by Mongol raiders after breaking through the great wall. Happy with the area, a group of veterans banded together to create a new family and adopted the surname of ?Mah? in honor of their great horses. One evening, during a friendly game of chance at their favorite restaurant, an accidental homicide occurred. Friends of the murderer conspired to protect him by encouraging him to assume his victim?s identity. With few alternatives, the murderer chooses to abandon his family and flees with a friend to America. After a stop in Hawaii, they arrive in San Francisco in midst of the 1850 Gold Rush. Lured by gold, they meet other landsmen with similar ambitions and form an alliance to prospect for gold. They possessed no knowledge or prior experiences for prospecting or mining, but they were young, ambitious, adventuresome, and willing to gamble. The new alliance journeyed into the goldfields where they found success in a unique manner. Life became good for all until the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco when a few members of the alliance became victims. Life continued while new generations appeared. With the departure of a few members, they suddenly realized that they had unintentionally created a tontine to reward the last survivor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been said that the world is always new to those who can see themselves in a new light. This creative and varied collection of poetry takes us along on a journey of introspection and self-discovery. As we read through these poems, the feelings they communicate are both intense and subtle. The author does not shrink from feelings of despair, but nor is he consumed by them. He finds consolation in the knowledge that memories endure even as new horizons beckon us away from them. Happiness is here too: the joy of romance, of playing with ones child, of discovering the wonders of nature, of vacations and even of the simple, everyday act of cooking an evening meal. William Wordsworth once described poetry as the spontaneous outflow of powerful emotion recollected in times of tranquility. This collection is surely a testament to that notion. Most importantly, however, this poetry is genuine. It is a cri de coeur in its passionate honesty to embrace that which is most difficult. It is a celebration of the view from above after having mastered a difficult struggle. It is a retrospective look at life and all that it has to offer. And ultimately, we find here, in the end, an acceptance of that life despite all its many flaws and imperfections. There is much enjoyment to be had here in reading and rereading this excellent collection of poems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an unusual true-life story as seen through the Diary of a teenage girl. The book portrays the adventurous and sometimes hilarious mis-adventurous life of a young widow and her 3 children, which takes place in 4 countries - South Africa, America, Canada and England. It paints a picture of the impact of the Second World War spent in South Africa. Their family is caught, while returning on an ocean liner to South Africa for a visit, by the declaration of war in September of 1939; then five years later, once again on a boat, they are delayed for almost a year in England. This time it is because of the announcement of V-E Day. They hope they are finally on their way home to America. Flora Ethne, the oldest of the 3 children, starts to keep her Diary at age 14. She has an amazing way with words and describes the life of her family stranded in South Africa during the war, and her grasp of the progress of the war is vivid as she listens to the BBC radio broadcasts. Its also a story of their Mothers courage and resourcefulness in keeping her family together and making a home for them wherever they happen to land, always with the day-to-day hope and determination of returning to their home in America.

Book excerpt: Walt Whitman once wrote: Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring, Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities filled with the foolish, Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?) Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renewed, Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me, Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined, The question, O me! so sad, recurring – What good amid these, O me, O life? Answer. That you are here – that life exists and identity, That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. This book is my verse. And hopefully Chapter 1 of it. What is yours?

Book Wandering Off

    Book Details:
  • Author : Phill Bettis
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2022-05-12
  • ISBN : 1664260226
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book Wandering Off written by Phill Bettis and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phill Bettis is a storyteller who believes in and loves the Lord. He also trusts that although the younger generation is adequately prepared to positively change the world, that God is the true author of our future. In a collection of profound writings that include newspaper columns and editorials, travel blogs, and other stories, Bettis begins with a commencement speech that challenges university graduates to wander off from convention in their careers, their methods of worship, and the way they will form society in a constantly evolving world. While outlining his writings with poignancy and supporting a new reformation that is long overdue, Bettis does not shy away from controversy as he shares his heart through thought-provoking stories that lead others through his childhood and beyond as he transformed from Opie growing up in Mayberry amid sunflowers, biscuits, and revivals to embrace all the personal and professional gifts of adulthood. Wandering Off is a volume of writings that underscore hope, faith, what is good, and what can be. “Reading Phill Bettis is like sitting in a porch swing surrounded by friends and family at the end of a summer day, with a full moon rising behind a stand of pines, a whip-poor-will’s plaintive call riding a soft breeze, and the sparkle of fireflies dotting the sky over a garden patch ...” —Norman Baggs
