Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philadelphia Stories is a kind of family album. As in their earlier volume, Still Philadelphia: A Photographic History, 1890-1940, Miller, Vogel, and Davis have collected photographs of ordinary lives and daily events from 1920 to 1960 that have shaped the collective memory of people in the Philadelphia area. Through a series of photo essays, Philadelphia Stories evokes the mood of an era that embraced the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and the complacent prosperity of the 1950s. Contemporary photos document physical changes in the metropolitan area: the developing skyline, the streets of rowhouses, the expanding suburbs. Details on homelife, food prices, school activities, local politics, shopping, social mores, and neighborhood customs chronicle experiences that are in many ways distinct to Philadelphians but also indicative of dramatic social, political, and economic shifts in the United States over forty years. Using photojournalism as the dominant style of documentary photography—and consciousness making—the book also features three prototypical family albums. These collections of snapshots taken by local residents to record weddings, holidays, and other family events not only depict how people saw themselves at various times but reveal the kinds of memories they wanted to keep. While major national events create the context for this social history, the book focuses on the daily lives of Philadelphians: as they cope with the Depression, participate in New Deal programs, buy automobiles and television sets, grow Victory Gardens, hold air raid drills, visit the Freedom Train, move to the suburbs, cling to old neighborhoods, and maintain tradition amid flux.Philadelphia Stories celebrates the recent past in the words and images of those who experienced it. It is a family album for all who know and love the city. Author note: Fredric M. Miller is Curator of the Urban Archives Center, Paley Library, Temple University.Morris J. Vogel is Professor of History, Temple University.Allen F. Davis is Professor of History, Temple University.

Book The Final Days of Little Pete s

Download or read book The Final Days of Little Pete s written by Michael Penn and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Final Days of Little Pete's: This project documents the end of a way of life for a city whose blue collar population is marginalized by a lack of work, and the suburban migration as the the demographics of Philadelphia are inverted. The blue collar are pushed to the outskirts, and the rich, formerly suburban dwellers, move back into Center City. In September of 2014, the rumors began. The site was going to be developed. Already six months into the project, it became even more vital as Penn witnessed a number of other independently-owned, affordable, and popular eateries be replaced by high-end dining or razed completely for a chain store or overpriced living. Little Pete's time was coming. By October 2015, Philadelphia's City Council voted in favor of the zoning change allowing for development on the site of Little Pete's. Suddenly, the timing became more critical. As Little Pete's became the subject of news articles, Instagram posts, tweets, food reviews, and blog stories, everyone seemed to have their own spin on the impending changes, and shared the same sense of urgency. Like so many trending topics before it, #SAVELITTLEPETES hit its crescendo in January of 2016, when the plans were released for a high-end boutique hotel and the unofficial countdown began. A few of my iconic Little Pete's photos have been borrowed by a number of news outlets to accompany announcements, stories, and developments regarding the closing, as they break. For the staff and loyal clientele of Little Pete's, life has gone on and will continue. But, it will look a lot different once Little Pete's is gone, taking with it the last affordable diner meal in the area. For the aging residents, students, and blue collar workers of Philadelphia, meals at Little Pete's served as important interaction with humanity. -------------------------------------------

Book A New Picture of Philadelphia Or the Stranger s Guide to the City and Adjoining Districts

Download or read book A New Picture of Philadelphia Or the Stranger s Guide to the City and Adjoining Districts written by Henry Schenck Tanner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Picture of Philadelphia, or the Stranger's Guide to the City and Adjoining Districts: In Which Are Described the Public Buildings; Literary, Scientific, Commercial and Benevolent Institutions; Places of Amusement; Places of Worship; Principal Cemeteries, and Every Other Object Worthy of Attention; With a Plan of the City and Its Environs These continual changes render it necessary to publish a new work or at least new editions of existing works at frequent intervals. An editor, to make his picture faithful, and to de lineate whatever is new among the prominent changes which perpetually occur, must employ his best faculties and keep them in constant exercise. Our design, in the outset, was to revise and amend one of the existing works: but on a careful examination of the subject, it was found more difficult and laborious to erase, to alter and to abridge, than to produce an entirely new work: all attempts of that sort have therefore been abandoned; and with some trifling excep tions, our present work will be found to be new, in almost every sense of the term. So far as the mere arrangement of the facts and the va rions descriptions, are concerned, nothing new has been attempted, nor is any change in these respects necessary. Accurate information is the primary object of the work; and to the accomplishment of this object have we chiefly directed our attention, in the firm belief, that in matters of this description, 3. Simple statement of facts is all that is required, to enable the reader to understand and appreciate the true condition and peculiar advantages of our highly favoured city. Book Fading Ads of Philadelphia

Download or read book Fading Ads of Philadelphia written by Lawrence O'Toole and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philadelphia's faded ads are history in plain sight. They are tangible remnants of changing neighborhoods and industries, and Fading Ads of Philadelphia presents a new way to view these forgotten urban stories. Join author and photographer Lawrence O'Toole as he explores these physical touchstones of the city's history--a sign for a bygone family business seen only from the elevated train tracks, the Gretz smokestack advertising the now defunct Kensington brewery and an ad for the Midtown Theater that is slowly reappearing from behind layers of whitewash. O'Toole re-creates this lost urban landscape as he hunts signs from Center City to the River Wards and from South Philadelphia to West Philadelphia. Through this stunningly illustrated book, urbanites will again view these too often overlooked ads--and their stories--with fresh eyes.

Book New Philadelphia in Vintage Postcards

Download or read book New Philadelphia in Vintage Postcards written by Erin L. VanFossen and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1772, Native Americans granted land in the Tuscarawas Valley to Moravian missionary David Zeisberger, and he established the Christian community of Schoenbrunn Village, which remained until 1777 when members were forced to relocate. Then in late 1804, John Knisely, his family, and other pioneers braved the western frontier and settled on the Tuscarawas River near the Schoenbrunn Village site. On October 23, 1804, John Knisely founded the town of New Philadelphia. He was a great philanthropist, donating land to the city for future public buildings, guaranteeing its selection as the Tuscarawas County Seat. In Schoenbrunn Village, which has been partially excavated and rebuilt as a historic site in New Philadelphia, missionaries lived in harmony with Native Americans, and so it seems fitting that New Philadelphia, through the influence of John Knisely's generosity, has maintained its image as the new "city of brotherly love." Two hundred years later, the city strives to keep Knisely's dream alive with its generous allocation of resources and commitment to those in need.
