Book excerpt: On November 3, 2005, Alexander Vasil’evich Kazhikhov left this world, untimely and unexpectedly. He was one of the most in?uential mathematicians in the mechanics of ?uids, and will be remembered for his outstanding results that had, and still have, a c- siderablysigni?cantin?uenceinthe?eld.Amonghis manyachievements, werecall that he was the founder of the modern mathematical theory of the Navier-Stokes equations describing one- and two-dimensional motions of a viscous, compressible and heat-conducting gas. A brief account of Professor Kazhikhov’s contributions to science is provided in the following article “Scienti?c portrait of Alexander Vasil’evich Kazhikhov”. This volume is meant to be an expression of high regard to his memory, from most of his friends and his colleagues. In particular, it collects a selection of papers that represent the latest progress in a number of new important directions of Mathematical Physics, mainly of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics. These papers are written by world renowned specialists. Most of them were friends, students or colleagues of Professor Kazhikhov, who either worked with him directly, or met him many times in o?cial scienti?c meetings, where they had the opportunity of discussing problems of common interest.

Book Atmospheric and Oceanic Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book Atmospheric and Oceanic Fluid Dynamics written by Geoffrey K. Vallis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-06 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid dynamics is fundamental to our understanding of the atmosphere and oceans. Although many of the same principles of fluid dynamics apply to both the atmosphere and oceans, textbooks tend to concentrate on the atmosphere, the ocean, or the theory of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD). This textbook provides a comprehensive unified treatment of atmospheric and oceanic fluid dynamics. The book introduces the fundamentals of geophysical fluid dynamics, including rotation and stratification, vorticity and potential vorticity, and scaling and approximations. It discusses baroclinic and barotropic instabilities, wave-mean flow interactions and turbulence, and the general circulation of the atmosphere and ocean. Student problems and exercises are included at the end of each chapter. Atmospheric and Oceanic Fluid Dynamics: Fundamentals and Large-Scale Circulation will be an invaluable graduate textbook on advanced courses in GFD, meteorology, atmospheric science and oceanography, and an excellent review volume for researchers. Book Energy Transfers in Fluid Flows

Download or read book Energy Transfers in Fluid Flows written by Mahendra K. Verma and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date comprehensive text useful for graduate students and academic researchers in the field of energy transfers in fluid flows. The initial part of the text covers discussion on energy transfer formalism in hydrodynamics and the latter part covers applications including passive scalar, buoyancy driven flows, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), dynamo, rotating flows and compressible flows. Energy transfers among large-scale modes play a critical role in nonlinear instabilities and pattern formation and is discussed comprehensively in the chapter on buoyancy-driven flows. It derives formulae to compute Kolmogorov's energy flux, shell-to-shell energy transfers and locality. The book discusses the concept of energy transfer formalism which helps in calculating anisotropic turbulence.

Book A Mathematical Introduction to Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book A Mathematical Introduction to Fluid Mechanics written by A. J. Chorin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes are based on a one-quarter (i. e. very short) course in fluid mechanics taught in the Department of Mathematics of the University of California, Berkeley during the Spring of 1978. The goal of the course was not to provide an exhaustive account of fluid mechanics, nor to assess the engineering value of various approxima tion procedures. The goals were: (i) to present some of the basic ideas of fluid mechanics in a mathematically attractive manner (which does not mean "fully rigorous"); (ii) to present the physical back ground and motivation for some constructions which have been used in recent mathematical and numerical work on the Navier-Stokes equations and on hyperbolic systems; (iil. ) 'to interest some of the students in this beautiful and difficult subject. The notes are divided into three chapters. The first chapter contains an elementary derivation of the equations; the concept of vorticity is introduced at an early stage. The second chapter contains a discussion of potential flow, vortex motion, and boundary layers. A construction of boundary layers using vortex sheets and random walks is presented; it is hoped that it helps to clarify the ideas. The third chapter contains an analysis of one-dimensional gas iv flow, from a mildly modern point of view. Weak solutions, Riemann problems, Glimm's scheme, and combustion waves are discussed. The style is informal and no attempt was made to hide the authors' biases and interests.

  • ISBN : 1475733232
  • Pages : 686 pages

Download or read book Fluid Dynamics written by Constantine Pozrikidis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ready access to computers at an institutional and personal level has defined a new era in teaching and learning. The opportunity to extend the subject matter of traditional science and engineering disciplines into the realm of scientific computing has become not only desirable, but also necessary. Thanks to port ability and low overhead and operating costs, experimentation by numerical simulation has become a viable substitute, and occasionally the only alternative, to physical experiment at ion. The new environment has motivated the writing of texts and mono graphs with a modern perspective that incorporates numerical and com puter programming aspects as an integral part of the curriculum: meth ods, concepts, and ideas should be presented in a unified fashion that motivates and underlines the urgency of the new elements, but does not compromise the rigor of the classical approach and does not oversimplify. Interfacing fundamental concepts and practical methods of scientific computing can be done on different levels. In one approach, theory and implement at ion are kept complementary and presented in a sequential fashion. In a second approach, the coupling involves deriving compu tational methods and simulation algorithms, and translating equations into computer code instructions immediately following problem formu lations. The author of this book is a proponent of the second approach and advocates its adoption as a means of enhancing learning: interject ing methods of scientific computing into the traditional discourse offers a powerful venue for developing analytical skills and obtaining physical insight.
