Book A Cultural History of the Arabic Language

Download or read book A Cultural History of the Arabic Language written by Sharron Gu and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of literary Arabic describes the evolution of Arabic poetry and prose in the context of music, ritual performance, the arts and architecture. The thousands-of-years-old language is perhaps more highly developed and refined than any other on earth. This book focuses on what is unique about Arabic compared to other major languages of the world (Greek, Latin, Hebrew, English and Spanish) and how the distinct characteristics of Arabic took shape at various points in its history. The book provides a cultural background for understanding social and political institutions and religious beliefs--more influenced by the rhythms and depths of poetic language than other cultures--in the Middle East today.

Book The Origins of Early Semitic Ritual

Download or read book The Origins of Early Semitic Ritual written by S. H. Hooke and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these lectures an attempt is made to relate the ritual practices of the Hebrews, as contained in the Old Testament, to the larger field of the elaborate rituals of Mesopotamian civilization, and to what we know of the early ritual of Canaan. . . . The first lecture is devoted to a survey of the sources from which our knowledge of Mesopotamian ritual is derived and to a description of the general character of the most important types of Mesopotamian ritual. . . . The second lecture attempts to do the same thing for the early ritual of Canaan. . . . The last lecture attempts to set the principal ritual practices and institutions of the Hebrews, as contained in the Old Testament and the Mishnah, in the perspective of the Mesopotamian and Canaanite pattern described in the first two lectures, to estimate their debt to these sources, and to arrive at some conception of the historical development of Hebrew ritual. . . . It is becoming clear that in the earliest stages of religion, myth and ritual are inseparably connected, and that their study must be carried on side by side. --from the Preface

Book The Identities of the Beast from the Sea and the Beast from the Land in Revelation 13

Download or read book The Identities of the Beast from the Sea and the Beast from the Land in Revelation 13 written by Joseph Poon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to identify the beast from the sea and the beast from the land in Revelation 13 by studying their unique link together with the dragon in Revelation 12: the land beast is subordinate to the sea beast, which in turn is subordinate to the dragon. The early sections of the book provide a review of previous scholarship, the influence of Daniel 7 in understanding Revelation 13, and the Leviathan-Behemoth motif in several apocalyptic writings. The core of the book, however, seeks to demonstrate that the relationship of the two beasts and the dragon fits well with the tripartite hierarchy that Georges Dumezil has discovered as one of the dominant structures of relationships in Indo-European mythological traditions. In congruence with the criteria of the three hierarchical levels in Dumezil's system, the dragon concerns the ultimate sovereignty in a supernatural sphere, while the sea beast and land beast are found, respectively, as a warlike figure in a war context and as a figure relating to the economic theme. Based on this finding, the book concludes that the two beasts represent the imperial power and the imperial cult, as most commentators believe.

Book The Storm God in the Ancient Near East

Download or read book The Storm God in the Ancient Near East written by Alberto R. W. Green and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2003-06-23 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive study of a common deity found in the ancient Near East as well as many other cultures, Green brings together evidence from the worlds of myth, iconography, and literature in an attempt to arrive at a new synthesis regarding the place of the Storm-god. He finds that the Storm-god was the force primarily responsible for three major areas of human concern: (1) religious power because he was the ever-dominant environmental force upon which peoples depended for their very lives; (2) centralized political power; and (3) continuously evolving sociocultural processes, which typically were projected through the Storm-god’s attendants. Green traces these motifs through the Mesopotamian, Anatolian, Syrian, and Levantine regions; with regard to the latter, he argues that Yahweh of the Bible can be identified as a storm-god, though certain unique characteristics came to be associated with him: he was the Creator of all that is created and the self-existing god who needs no other.

Book God s Conflict with the Dragon and the Sea

Download or read book God s Conflict with the Dragon and the Sea written by John Day and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-20 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament contains a number of interesting poetic references to God's conflict with a dragon, called by names such as Leviathan, Rahab or the twisting serpent, and with the sea. In this original contribution to the background and understanding of the Old Testament Dr Day undertakes a detailed and thorough examination of these allusions. Building on the discovery of the Ugaritic texts, he demonstrates a source for these references within Canaanite mythology. His study further explores the associations of the imagery. Sometimes in the Old Testament the dragon is associated with the creation of the world, or it becomes a symbol of a foreign nation, and in some references it is associated with divine conflict at the end of time.

It contains an extensive archaeological study of all known Middle Bronze through Iron Age temples, sanctuaries, and open-air shrines, organized by period and geographic region.
