Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Light on Don Diego De Penalosa: Proof That He Never Made an Expedition From Santa Fe to Quivira and the Mississippi River in 1662 At the court of Louis XIV, Penalosa capitalized his personal knowledge of the regions mentioned in his three proposals. In 1684, at the time that he offered to seize Panuco, he presented to Monsieur de Seignelay, French minister of marine, a manuscript Relacion, 1 purporting to be an account of an expedition made by himself in 1662, while governor of New Mexico, to Quivira and beyond to the Mischipi river 11 - a stream thought by Houck to have been the Mississippi,12 by Shea to have been the Missouri river.13 This Relacion, according to its title page, was written by Father Nicolas de Freytas, one of the Francis can missionaries of New Mexico and the governor's chaplain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most people it probably seems that La Salle and his men, permanently fixed in the pantheon of explorers of the North American continent, need little further introduction. The fact is that this whole early period of exploration and colonization by the French in the southeastern United States has received far less scholarly attention than the corresponding English and Spanish activities in the same area, and even the existing scholarship has failed to focus clearly upon the Indian tribes whose attitudes toward the European new comers were crucial to their very survival. In this collection of essays marking the tricentennial of René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle's 1682 expedition into the Lower Mississippi Valley, thirteen scholars from a variety of disciplines assess his legacy and the significance of French colonialism in the Southeast. These scholars in the fields of French colonial history and the ethnohistory of the Indians of the Louisiana Colony deal with a diversity of topics ranging from La Salle's expedition itself and its place in the context of New World colonialism in general to the interaction of French settlers with native Indian tribes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period between the publication of Pierre Esprit Radisson's Voyages by the Prince Society of Boston in 1885 and the appearance of Caesars of the Wilderness in 1943, scholarly journals and books were often enlivened by the historical controversy surrounding Radisson and his fellow explorer, Medard Chouart, Sieur Des Groseilliers. Often referred to as the "Radisson problem," the controversy called into question almost every aspect of the two men's lives, from the authenticity of parts of Radisson's narrative to the exact itinerary the men followed in their travels. The publication of Caesars in the Wilderness brought the historical debate to an end. Based on many years of research in repositories throughout France, England, and North America, the books, with its skillful presentation of new evidence, settled many of the questions that had long puzzled scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Randolph B. "Mike" Campbell has spent the better part of the last five decades helping Texans rediscover their history, producing a stream of definitive works on the social, political, and economic structures of the Texas past. Through meticulous research and terrific prose, Campbell's collective work has fundamentally remade how historians understand Texan identity and the state's southern heritage, as well as our understanding of such contentious issues as slavery, westward expansion, and Reconstruction. Campbell's pioneering work in local and county records has defined the model for grassroots research and community studies in the field. More than any other scholar, Campbell has shaped our modern understanding of Texas. In this collection of seventeen original essays, Campbell's colleagues, friends, and students offer a capacious examination of Texas's history--ranging from the Spanish era through the 1960s War on Poverty--to honor Campbell's deep influence on the field. Focusing on themes and methods that Campbell pioneered, the essays debate Texas identity, the creation of nineteenth-century Texas, the legacies of the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the remaking of the Lone Star State during the twentieth century. Featuring some of the most well-known names in the field--as well as rising stars--the volume offers the latest scholarship on major issues in Texas history, and the enduring influence of the most eminent Texas historian of the last half century.
