Book Anarchist s Guide to Historic House Museums

Download or read book Anarchist s Guide to Historic House Museums written by Franklin D Vagnone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these days of an aging traditional audience, shrinking attendance, tightened budgets, increased competition, and exponential growth in new types of communication methods, America’s house museums need to take bold steps and expand their overall purpose beyond those of the traditional museum. They need not only to engage the communities surrounding them, but also to collaborate with visitors on the type and quality of experience they provide. This book is a groundbreaking manifesto that calls for the establishment of a more inclusive, visitor-centered paradigm based on the shared experience of human habitation. It draws inspiration from film, theater, public art, and urban design to transform historic house museums while providing a how-to guide for making historic house museums sustainable, through five primary themes: communicating with the surrounding community, engaging the community, re-imagining the visitor experience, celebrating the detritus of human habitation, and acknowledging the illusion of the shelter’s authenticity. Anarchist's Guide to Historic House Museums offers a wry, but informed, rule-breaking perspective from authors with years of experience and gives numerous vivid examples of both good and not-so-good practices from house museums in the U.S.

This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of Old Salem and the Towns Adjacent: Viz; Danvers, Beverly, Marblehead and Lynn There was a great stir one afternoon, at the Cape. A youngster named Jabez Tilley had gone out to pick blackberries in the woods toward Manchester. After an absence of a couple of hours, he reappeared at the settlement, making headway with all the speed his duck-legs were capable of. His locomotive tune was pitched so high, that he pitched himself over the rocks, down into a salt-pan - for extensive salt-works were established at the Cape by the first comers - before he had power to bring up. Book North Carolina and Old Salem Cookery

Download or read book North Carolina and Old Salem Cookery written by Beth Tartan and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acknowledged as the classic work on North Carolina cuisine, North Carolina and Old Salem Cookery was first published in 1955. This new edition, marking the book's first appearance in paperback, has been revised and updated by the author and includes several dozen new dishes. The book is already a standard reference in many kitchens, both for the wealth of good recipes it presents and for the accompanying information on the distinctive heritage of the state's cooking. Beth Tartan provides recipes for such North Carolina classics as Persimmon Pudding and Sweet Potato Pie. A chapter on Old Salem highlights the cuisine of the Moravian settlement there and offers recipes, including Moravian Sugar Cake, from their famous celebrations. Tartan evokes the time when people ate three meals a day and sat down to a magical Sunday dinner each week. With the advent of boxed mixes and supermarkets, she says, old favorites began to disappear from menus. And in time, so have the cooks whose storehouse of knowledge and skills represent an important link to our past.

Book Reconstructing Historic Landmarks

Download or read book Reconstructing Historic Landmarks written by Wayde Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic reconstructions have been a consistent part of the historic preservation and heritage conservation movements in the United States and Canada. Indeed, reconstruction has been the primary tool at the most influential historic sites, for example: the Governor's Palace and the Capitol at Colonial Williamsburg, USA, and in Canada, the Fortress of Louisbourg. Dozens of other reconstructions have appeared during the past century in North America, undertaken by individuals, communities, states, and provinces, and by national agencies responsible for cultural heritage. Despite this prevalence, historic reconstructions have received little scholarly attention and the question of what motivated the proponents of these projects remains largely unexamined. This book explores that question through detailed studies of ten historic reconstructions located throughout Canada and the United States, ranging from 1908 to 2011. Drawing upon diverse archival sources and site investigations, the proponents of each site are given voice to address their need to remake these landmarks, be it to sustain, to challenge, or even subvert a historical narrative, or – with reference to contemporary heritage studies – to reclaim these spaces. Reconstructing Historic Landmarks provides a fascinating insight into these shifting concepts of history in North America and will be of considerable interest both to students and scholars of historic preservation and indeed to heritage professionals involved in reconstructions themselves.

Book excerpt: A close-up look at this historic Massachusetts landmark, including photos and illustrations. Though Salem is located on Massachusetts’s scenic North Shore, its history has not always been picturesque. The “Witch City,” as it is internationally known, is home to numerous landmarks dedicated to the notorious trials of 1692. Of these, the Witch House is perhaps most significant—the former residence of Judge Jonathan Corwin, whose court ordered the execution of twenty men and women. It was here that Corwin examined the unfortunate accused. There is, however, more to this ancient building than its most famous occupant. From wars and death to prosperity and progress, this book searches beneath the beams and studs of the Witch House—to find the stories of those who called this place home.

  • Author : Robert Mazrim
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2008-09-15

Download or read book The Sangamo Frontier written by Robert Mazrim and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Abraham Lincoln moved to Illinois’ Sangamo Country in 1831, he found a pioneer community transforming from a cluster of log houses along an ancient trail to a community of new towns and state roads. But two of the towns vanished in a matter of years, and many of the activities and lifestyles that shaped them were almost entirely forgotten. In The Sangamo Frontier, archaeologist Robert Mazrim unearths the buried history of this early American community, breathing new life into a region that still rests in Lincoln’s shadow. Named after a shallow river that cuts through the prairies of central Illinois, the Sangamo Country—an area that now encompasses the capital city of Springfield and present-day Sangamon County—was first colonized after the War of 1812. For the past fifteen years, Mazrim has conducted dozens of excavations there, digging up pieces of pioneer life, from hand-forged iron and locally made crockery to pewter spoons and Staffordshire teacups. And here, in beautifully illustrated stories of each dig, he shows how each of these small artifacts can teach us something about the lifestyles of people who lived on the frontier nearly two hundred years ago. Allowing us to see past the changed modern landscape and the clichés of pioneer history, Mazrim deftly uses his findings to portray the homes, farms, taverns, and pottery shops where Lincoln’s neighbors once lived and worked. Drawing readers into the thrill of discovery, The Sangamo Frontier inaugurates a new kind of archaeological history that both enhances and challenges our written history. It imbues today’s landscape with an authentic ghostliness that will reawaken the curiosity of anyone interested in the forgotten people and places that helped shape our nation.
